Mobile "studio" [SOLVED]

I was wondering if anyone uses sort of a mobile setup?....l need something with 2-3 shelves where I put my gear, hook it up and leave it set up, ready to go, just plug it in...with wheels so I can move it around .

My gear: 1 or 2 iPads , but mostly one.
BeatStep pro sequencer
Novation Remote25 SLMKII
Small sound system 2.1 (sub and 2 satellite speakers)...(or a phono preamp going to sound system, depending where I am)

I noticed that sometimes I am lazy or not enthusiastic to setup my gear...unpack it all, connect the wires etc etc....and sometimes only for a short time...if I had it all setup just plug in the iPad it would be so much easier...

I like the portability of iPad and want to keep it simple....does anyone use anything like that?
I try not to go sit behind the PC, there's no place and could not stay setup anyway...and I don't have a studio :'(

Thanks for your ideas....

  • I have an old Griffen StudioConnect that functions a lot like the old docking stations for laptops. I plug my iPad in and I'm instantly connected to my full-blown studio, where my iPad serves as the hub/DAW (Auria). It also charges my iPad while I record.

When that's done, unplug the iPad and enter couch mode with my trusty Samson SR950s

I understand from another recent thread that you can find these perfectly capable StudioConnects at a very low price. You'll need an adapter or two to get it to work with some audio interfaces, but it's by far the cheapest solution that charges and docks your iPad. Hope that helps!

  • I've been thinking about something like that for a while. I have the luxury of having a bonus room with a 8ft desk that I use for my studio setup with my laptop and stuff but I want to build a mobile rig as well for playing live or just being able to take a studio anywhere and do some recording.

I saw these cases a while ago and thought that would be perfect but they are super expensive. It would be cool to do something like that and retrofit an audio interface and into it so that all you have to do is plug in a few things and your ready to go.

I also thought of a road case with a few drawers in the front and a lid that opened up on top. but it on casters or get one of those little hand trucks with the foldable wheels to attach to it. Here is something I pondered on a couple years ago but never got around to building it.

  • @TGiG What just happened? I feel like I was transferred to some alternate dimension. All I can do is shake my head, there are no words to describe it.

    Thank you all :)

What do you think about this? Anybody used it?

Some products that @TGiG quoted are not available in Europe...

I looked at the tubular 2 tier system but they seem to be more expensive...and not adjustable in height and tilt too much...

  • I have just gone from a mobile set-up that stayed on a bespoke tray under a table in the lounge to a permanent workstation and the difference in my productivity is night and day.

    Well I bought that one....by gear4music
    Cheers

  • Good choice, I bought a Quiklok Z726L with extra tiers and a rack kit to hold a power strip, mixer, interface and hide some cables. Not exciting but actually best £200 investment in a long time. Enjoy!!

Perhaps you can build some sort of framework to attach to a dolly to semi-permanently attach your equipment and just roll that around (if you can find a way to transport what you come up with) to where you want it, and voila!

    Just a thought.

What do you use the launchpad for without a computer? Or is there one out of view?

Thanks @ghostly606, originally I wanted something with wheels, (started looking for rolling shelves etc) but anything decent had no wheels... And I had your Quiklok and another one in basket too...
What I like about this stand is that the 4 legs can be independently adjusted in height, so it can be tilted a bit and adjusted in height and width...but no wheels...
If I had your gear, I need the Quiklok

@Brain , I thought about building/modifying something but the time and buying materials would cost more for amateur looking results...no tools and workshop...

@mschenkel.it , LOL, that was exactly my setup, me on a sofa, pad on lap, controller on the coffee table, not easy to reach, wires all over etc....

Launchpad app or Modstep. No computers here.

Nice setup there matey, I'm not in the slightest bit jealous. Honest, my green complexion is because i feel a little i'll, it is not jealousy what so ever. ;)

  • Can you actually use a Volca at that steep angle? I’ve seen those stands that stack three of them up one above the other but on those the top one is almost vertical. It’d be like hanging it on the wall and using it there.

  • The volca bass is sitting at about 60 degrees I'd guess. Even vertical would be fine (good enough for racks), I just tweak the knobs as they are sequenced via the Monomachine or Modstep or play via the master keyboard. 60 degrees is probably optimum, at that level it's perfectly in my eyeline.

  • Cheers @AndyPlankton , I have been very lucky with deals on the OP1 and Monomachine, they'd be out of my league usually. Really happy with this setup.

You just need a nice iOS based editor for that Circuit that is peeping out from under the Launchpad, I'm still on it, I have solved the issue of it automatically sending the midi and overwriting your preset :) I am now trying to sum up the enthusiasm to test each and every setting, the main synth isn't too bad, it's all the ModMatrix and macro settings that seems daunting and tedious at the moment.

You're not wrong. Tbh without an iOS Circuit editor I won't be keeping it. No pressure then @AndyPlankton!!

  • (I started work on a TB Midi Stuff editor but lack the knowledge to save and recall patches using sysex. If someone can do that I will be eternally grateful! In fact, are you listening @Launchpadforios, gonna tell yer pals?!)

Oddly, for the past few years I have not had a computer desk, I’ve had a standing desk (less passion from less protein, and sitting). I already had, stashed away, a quite nice “QuikLok QL-690” with a collection of assorted QL-649 QL-635 QL-650 QL-636. It’s nice to use standing at, for just general computing and staying alive. Certainly not mobile, though. If I drag it, the Mac Mini falls off.

  • That's the beauty of having the power strip and mixer on the rack, once untethered from the single wall socket, this can be wheeled wherever.

I can't do the save/recall because none of the tools for creating control surfaces currently support bulk sysex, well Lemur does but the supported size is too small for circuit.. A couple of the others have it in development but no information as to when it might surface or whether parsing the sysex will be possible.
What I CAN do is have the synth editable and savable in your session. You'd have to use the PC editor to save as an actual preset.

@ghostly606 , I see you got this heavy duty green iPad cover...how do you like it protection and function wise?
    What is it called?

Ergonomists can go home, they’re no longer required, this surely represents peak usability.

It's just a £1 or so ebay effort, offers really good protection. Camera lense, lightning port and headphone socket perfectly accessible and it works with my stand and camera mount. Great for the money.
