Color coded all-in-one piano roll editing?

Is there an app with a piano roll where you can just compose the whole track in one piano roll view and then after the fact, highlight various midi notes and quickly assign different instruments to them? Also each instrument assignment is color coded for easy viewing/editing in the single piano roll? I feel like this is a slam dunk, no brainer UI for electronic music and I'm hoping it exists.

FL Studio on the PC has that (sort of) in its piano roll.
Probably more limited than you're thinking though.

iOS piano rolls are generally barely usable IMO, and all have many shortcomings. They're light years away from what you're suggesting here, unless there's some app out there that I don't know about (but would love to!).

StepPolyArp has the ability to send notes to different midi outs in the same pattern, but not really the way you're thinking

  • I've been looking around, there's not even this thing on desktop. Fl studio is not even close, I've used it. Even software that allows you to edit midi for multiple tracks in one piano roll still makes you create the midi in SEPARATE piano rolls. Wtf? I'm getting really frustrated because for all the sound design, sequencing, and other utilities that are covered, there appears to be no interface that makes orchestrating fun currently. We are left to do lots of copying and pasting and deleting.

  • Maybe there's a Max for Live device someone has made which does something similar I don't know, but maybe worth a look.

I've actually been looking for something quite similar in Live but not found it yet. A sequencer for one track in Live where I can send out different parts to different midi channels. But do it on one screen not multiple tracks. not sure if this is possible natively but you could definitely make a M4L device which does it.

M4L is great though, like apps for Live. Not that easy to search through though for what you are looking for.

A paid max4live device came out literally a few days ago from isotonik that does precisely what you want. http://isotonikstudios.com/chaos-culture/midi-multiclip-editor/
