New Avalanches!

The white whale! I see it!

Not sure if you all know who the Avalanches are, but "Since I Left You" is possibly the most astonishing sample-based record ever made. It has been 15 years since that album, and the follow-up has been promised for at least a dozen of them. Never to appear.

And today Pitchfork reports new music is coming. TODAY. Best update ever. If true.

  • Since I Left You is a landmark album. Glad to hear that they are releasing new music, although how in the world they top their last, I don't know.

  • Yes, nice work in that album. Every time I listen to it I feel like I'm walking around a massive bpm synced groove house walking from room to room in a dreamlike state. No expectations with the new release but definitely curious where they've taken it next.

  • Thanks for the heads up! I loved the first album when it came out.

  • It was a classic album of its era, bit too crazy at times though...

  • I love that album! Hopefully their new stuff is up to scratch...

  • I've heard a lot about this album, they have been trying to release it for 5 years now. Unless they gave up on that and started from scratch

  • Technically remarkable but it lacks the soul of Endtroducing...

Looking forward to this though, the world has moved on since the early 2000s.

  • @ghostly606 @supadom agreed that it's more booty shaking than soul shaking, but still... an impressive piece of work considering what went into making it.

Can't we admire both the Avalanches and DJ Shadow? ;)
As for the "soul" of an album that is made entirely of samples? I'm just playing devil's advocate, but there's been a lot of music criticism lately about genres that are privileged for their so-called "authenticity." Like, why is hip-hop authentic and rightly praised when disco (which is the touchstone for the Avalanches) is dismissed?

That said? The first track released by the Avalanches, "Frankie Sinatra," is a little lame. Or maybe just ordinary. It features Danny Brown and MF Doom.
