Hello I'm New Here (but rather an antique of sorts)!
Hello all you iOS-ers,
60 years abound
Making of sound
I've managed to receive an iPad Air 2 128 via work, and I've subsequently loaded it up with a grand variety of apps, none of which I've properly learned yet!
I have been playing for income locally and live, mostly as a solo act since the late 1970’s. I started with the likes of Jim Croce, Al Stewart, Cat Stevens, Steely Dan, Chuck Berry, Moody Blues, etc.
This was before the Roland TB303 and Roland TR606 and before MIDI was even born (I was a Roland Sync / FSK user before MIDI). My first live gigs for income were playing restaurants and such for $50 per night (plus a meal!), quite possibly before a number of y’all arrived on the planet.
I have not played anywhere live for income for eight years now, as I teach fulltime now. Also local, live, good paying gig are virtually nonexistent due to a variety or reasons. I have done some weddings and other functions as a DJ, but I do not consider that an aspect of my musicianship.
I play guitar, guitar-synth, keys and of course sing and I have no consequential internet presence preferring instead to spend that time keeping my chops up and working in my studio, it’s non-iOS based as I use Sonar, etc. but that's a whole other story I guess.
I still jam with people on occasion (guitarists, drummers, bass-players, keyboardists, vocalist, etc.) and I might put a band together at some point, or do my solo act again. The iPad Air 2 128 has possibilities for live performance.
My intent is to get to know you all, learn from you all, learn how to use iOS for music, perhaps get a proper internet presence, maybe start playing live again and continue with my music studio efforts. On a related note I have way-way too much gear and I recently bought a Novation LaunchPad Mini, Keith McMillan SoftStep 2, and a bunch of other iOS-useable hardware.
As an aside, I take a great interest in the works of people such as Christopher Hitchens, Arthur C. Clarke, Richard Dawkins, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Isaac Asimov, Gregory Benford, Sam Harris, Lawrence Krauss, Bill Nye and many other luminaries, as well as donating to nonprofits such as The Planetary Society, Western Wilderness Society, ACLU, Richard Dawkins Foundation, Project Reason and many other science-based and logic-based irreligious nonprofits.
Oftentimes I practice the modes (you know Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian…) while watching videos of said luminaries.
Ciao for now, thanks for reading, and I look forward to learning more about iOS!

Good to have you join and welcome! You're in the right place if you want to learn more about iOS music. Don't hesitate to throw any questions you might have into the mix.
Thank you funjunkie27, the truth is I am somewhat overwhelmed with the amazing variety and unbelievably low cost! I’m the kid in the candy store with eyes bigger than his stomach.
What most intrigues me at the moment are apps such as Flux:FX, ThumJam, Chordion, Boderland, NodeBeat, GeoShred, HarmonyWiz, etc. so yep, I bought them all and many more. Each one of these apps contains a music world unto its own (well linkable to some degree via AUM, Audiobus, etc.).
Is there some way to turn off that annoying prompt "Draft Saved" on this forum?
Hello there good sir! Nice to meet you. I'm not a pro musician I just like to make sounds tweak and automate synth apps and I also looooove Hitchens and Harris, no homo.
That looks like a good start. I have all of them, although I've deleted a few to free up room for others. You'll soon realize, if you haven't already, that appaholism is a very real thing. I've slowed it down considerably lately, mainly due to finances, but also after learning that many apps I bought, although initially interesting and novel, got shelved due to non-use and/or to free up space.
I don't believe there's a way to disable the "Draft Saved" message.
Nice to meet you firejan82 and you are ahead of me in terms of your abilities on iOS.
Hello funjunkie27, I have not found any need to delete any of them, perhaps because I have 128 on board? In any case, if I was to do it again I would just buy a few of the best apps, so you are 100% right about appaholism. That's why I mentioned "I’m the kid in the candy store with eyes bigger than his stomach".
I should have thought more about it beforehand, but no great harm, it's been momentarily exciting to buy them all (many on sale) and perhaps the developers will benefit if not me, I guess we'll see.
Autonomy and Freedom of choice are critical to our well being, and choice is critical to freedom and autonomy. Nonetheless, though modern Americans have more choice than any group of people ever has before, and thus, presumably, more freedom and autonomy, we don't seem to be benefiting from it psychologically. - quoted from Ch.5, The Paradox of Choice, 2004
Welcome puppy, sir! You've embarked on a great adventure ....( I'm a big fan of the Hitch, too)
Hello Vorgon, you clearly have both a finely-tuned sense of humor and good taste!
Talking about good taste, have you seen the Twilight Zone "To Serve Man" based on the short story by Damon Knight? I saw it on TV when it first came out and I could not sleep soundly for a week! http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2f15dh
I take great exception to your stance on belief systems. Oh wait, actually I agree, I think. I find this sort of thing hard to discern. Oh wait, now I remember, I’ve done some videos on it. It’s hard to tell.
Welcome @puppychumful, I'm new too, after lurking for ages.
I'm an acoustic/electric fiddlist so gigged mostly in bands, and am a decade youthfuller, otherwise my history and yours are similar.
Awesome to see you here.
@puppychumful welcome. The door behind you has melted.
Welcome, @puppychumful (sounds Brit to me?). You found the wellspring iOS community, part of any way. There is also an active private FB group with much overlap here, iPad Musician.
I'm a professional MIDI and audio DSP programmer but only a mere amateur noodler on the keys. And a raging Appoholic (one of the first to announce "Hi. My name is David and I'm an Appoholic"). Though I started waaay back in the 60's on a cheap Spanish guitar and the innards of mainframe computers, and yes, I do play 'that' song.
Welcome, @puppychumful . Great to have you here. You might be surprised to find out that around these parts you aren't all that old. We did a age survey a while ago and there were very few people under 30 and a majority above 40 with quite a few in their 50s and some above.
Hello JohnnyGoodyear,
I'm very pleased to melt you, and don't you worry none, a system doesn't have one history but every possible history.
Hello u0421793,
Lest we forget Asimov's Zeroth Law: "A robot must not harm humanity".
Hello decibelle,
I respect and appreciate your live skillset and our similar background is a pleasant surprise!
Hello dwarman,
I chose the name puppychumful because I was rubbing my dogs belly and the word simply appeared as if on its own. Thank you for your kind insights.
Nice to meet ya.
Hello Nathan,
Oh golly I do hope that my iPad does not attach to me and nurture and protect me in any way necessary, after all the gods did not really condemn Sisyphus in as much as the myth demonstrates the essential human condition. Thank you for welcoming me!
Nice intro. Welcome.
Welcome to town @puppychumful Once you've unpacked all your stuff, sussed out what the local shops sell, registered with the library & are settled in, you may feel the need to join the Song of the month club. It's a complimentary hot tub that the landlord has installed at the bottom of the garden. Come on in...the waters lovely!
It's my pleasure to meet you JeffChasteen!
Hello Nathan, I'm still learning my way around iOS, most often preferring to play guitar, keyboards, sing, etc. because I'm so much more adept at those disciplines.
It's going to take me some time to get in to the habit of using iOS as part of my efforts. I do have Borderlands Granular and it blows my mind, I am just not very familiar with it nor what I'm going to do with it.
I have this idea that I might play / sing an acoustic guitar tune, and then ease gently into a warped middle section and then return it back in some way. I would want to do all of this in real-time, perhaps using Flux:FX and SoftStep2.
I don't know yet, so many choices, perhaps too many choices, but I do like the idea of keeping everything as immediate and real-times and instantly-changeable as possible.
Hi there and welcome !
If you are thinking of using iOS for live performance then I have one thing for you to think about.
CONTROL.
If you want to use multiple apps simultaneously, then you will need midi controllers, and apps that support midi control, the app switching needed in iOS is not great, especially under the pressure of being in a live environment.
If you want to use apps that make good use of the touchscreen for playing and give what the other instruments you already play cannot give, then you will only be able to 'play' one at a time.
On your iOS journey you will have moments of sheer joy, moments of absolute frustration, and moments of mediocrity, but rest assured, you will have fun, and we are all here to share in that journey with you.
Hello Bluepunk,
Thank you for the liquid invite, I would be very interested in hearing your views on the idea I presented to Nathan above. Is it possible to have that level of keeping everything as immediate and real-times and instantly-changeable as possible? Adrian Belew seems to be able to do so with Flux:FX (plus damn well everything else but the kitchen sink) however but he is a master, and I am not. Also I would like to do so in the context of a simple vocal / acoustic guitar.
Frank Zappa and Vernon Reid also come to mind but I'm not looking for bombastic complexity; I'm thinking Cat Stevens meets puppychumful meets the Twilight Zone.
Greetz @puppychumful ,
Thx for open us your background, and be very welcome home here.
Which apps did you have or use mostly?
I am solemnly soaking my hands in hot water after a day of chainsawing some trees the lovely Mrs. puppychumful wished me to remove.
I was thinking of using my SoftStep2 to control Flux:FX as it has a template ready to go for Flux:FX. I got somewhat used to playing keys and/or guitar and/or singing and/or controlling floor devices all in real-time when I did my solo act (doesn't mean I could still pull that off, and I could easily be deluding myself in terms of my remaining skillsets!)
I am not against multi-tracking at all, but I thought at first I should see if I can make it performance-like because I like music that has:
dynamics: pianissimo, forte, etc.
tempo: rallentando, accelerando, etc.
melody:
harmony:
I'm still not really sure about all this, and ideas you might have are appreciated very much! I was singing today about a lost motorcycle and lost girlfriend. They both die in the same fiery crash and it's an open question which one left the biggest loss. I like to put melodies first (at least sometimes) and then build everything else around it.
The problem (a true first-world problem of excess!) is I have never met an app I did not purchase (especially if it was on sale!) so I have far more than I need, plus I do not know how to properly use any of them, to be honest.
You and me both brother.
Welcome aboard!
;-)
Aum and flux is a good choice
For me its relevant that i could play a app intuitiv and easy.
The last app which rise instant into my top live playing apps with the touchscreen is
Shoom
So nice to play...easy to use and big range of sounds. For the 1.0 excellent.
