iOS effects + guitar signal for synth and sound landscapes

After a long absence, I’m getting back into iOS as a music-making tool. I have tons of apps over the years. My interest is re-kindled because I just re-tried MusicIO to tie together the iPad and the MacBook running Studio One. It looks like the water is safe to swim in this pool now, without too many hassles.

My current thinking is to constrain myself to:

  • playing guitar into Studio One on the MacBook
  • generating most / all original signals by guitar
  • use iPad for drums
  • use iPad and StudioOne effects for interesting synth and sonic landscapes, created from the guitar signal
  • make the effects more interesting by tweaking their parameters as the recorded guitar plays back

The last couples of point are what prompted me to write to you folks. What do you think? Have you tried and done something like this? How well did it work?

Thanks,

  • Joe

  • For example, I am thinking of taking a recorded clean guitar signal and putting it into Flux: FX

  • @joegrant413 I've found AUM very useful for processing guitar as you can set up a number of buses with different FX apps and route them to a common bus or to separate tracks and adjust the various volumes, pan, and bus send levels. You can also automate levels and effects parameters via MIDI which is particularly good for soundscapes.

  • Yup. AUM and all the washy, echoey fx you can think of. Crystalline and Echo Pad are a couple of my favorites. Frekvens too if used right. I'm thinking Borderlands too, but haven't tried it with guitar samples.

I've also used MIDIMorphosis to trigger other synths via pitch detection of a clean guitar signal. It's pretty fun playing Model 15 from my Strat.

    ^^

Also most of the AUFX and Holderness apps support MIDI Control of internal effects parameters.

  • I don't think I've had so much fun with guitar in a decade since I found MIDI Guitar 2 and Turnado.

  • The developerof Moodscape did some very inspiring stuff with guitar and Borderland.
There are quite a few videos on his channel

  • how would one set up to have midi control the internal parameters of effects?

I have Midi guitar 2 and AUM. Flux fx and various other effects apps, but what would i need to control/send the midi?

If anyone is kind enough to take the time to answer then please just assume i'm an idiot who knows nothing ( it won't be far from the truth. )

  • Thx for the replies! FWIW, a few years ago I messed around a lot with MIDI for guitar and the iPad. I'm leaning toward not going that route. I'm really trying to KISS... that's how I got burnt out on this stuff.

I've probably been away for about 1 to 1.5 years. There was no AUM then, so I have to get up to speed.

Also, I do recall really liking Echo Pad and Crystalline. Though I have to admit, my buddies on guitar forums had me doubt that I really was hearing anything that could compare with the quality of pedals....

Again, I'm grateful for the replies, and happy to see some more ideas.

  • BTW, I saw that Magellan comes up as an effect on MusicIO. But it didn't immediately handle the guitar signal.
