Thinking of getting one (and then being clever about using the SyncKontrol App from Korg, which has Link, to get it synced).

I have a PO-12, and I like it a lot. It's easy to use and it sounds cool. Much more power in that thing than you'd think just by looking at it.
I've only ever synced it to its kin (my PO-14 and PO-16), keep meaning to try it with my volcas cause I've heard they play nice with each other.

I've been reading that the one downside is you can't mute certain sounds in a pattern. That sounds like a shame. Any way round that (other than making lots of patterns?)
I have one and I personally think it's the best PO. You can get almost instant results, whereas the others need a lot of fiddling.

I have neither POs nor Volcas but I’m intrigued by how they sync. They seem to sync by click track at only 2ppqn (here’s a useful pdf on sync specs of various devices (except the POs)).
However, I saw that there was a firmware update to the Volca FM thing, recently, and looking at the actual file, it’s nothing more than a WAV! Now, does this mean that a Volca could one day be persuaded to use tape-sync FSK, which is how we did things with cassette Portastudios? If so, what about POs? Do they get firmware updated by WAV? If this is the case, they may well be capable of hearing FSK, and that may be a more useful sync means than the 2ppqn click. Or maybe not. As I say, I don’t have any of those devices.
You can insert and remove effects while a pattern is playing, and I think there's at least one effect that squelches the sound that you might could use as a muting effect.
Thanks. But the effects are global. But I guess useful if you want to quickly kill the whole drum kit. I was looking to just mute, say, the kick.
Anyway... I bought one today and have had quite a good play with it.

Time will tell how much actual use I'll get out of it though .
One question that's bugging me though. Effect 13 "note shuffle" is my number one favourite. But I can't for the life of me work out what determines which notes it shuffles in. On some patterns it will play nice snares and hats when touched. But on others it insists on always playing a massive kick or noise sound (not even used in the pattern). It always seems to play the same couple of sounds in any given pattern - but I'm different patterns those sounds change to different ones.
I thought it might be the number of the pattern - but it's not. Because copying the pattern duplicates the couple of sounds it chooses.
Very weird. I really want to figure out what makes it decide what to play!
Ok. Kind of figured it out.
Each instrument is paired with another instrument for when note shuffle is applied. And basically the sound is just swapped (the hits happen at exactly the same time). It seems to play some kind of default state of the swapped in sound. Don't think it's anything more complicated than that.
The 2 hats are paired with the 2 toms. And the cymbal is paired with the noise. I'm finding the default state of toms and the noise it swaps in a bit overbearing (especially when you have lots of hits) so maybe I need to avoid programming with the hats quite so much (there are plenty of other sounds).

Think I'm picking one up later today. I remember seeing the original video of these things being demoed in Norway or something...this was even before the NAMM 2015 announcement. My reaction was "wow, that's really cool! Excited to see what casing they develop for that motherboard, since that's obviously not the finished form factor." Nope. Hahaha!
I'm looking mostly at the OP-12 (Rhythm) and maybe the OP-20 (Arcade). The Korg Volca series were my gateway into this cheap hardware world, and I'm trying to sort out which of these would actually be useful in rudimentary music projects (or just fun to use). The OP-14 and OP-16 are absolutely maddening by locking you into chromatic C Major scales (without jumping through some serious hoops to get a workaround). That's nuts to me. It's not like the Volca Bass or Keys is particularly easy to play, but at least you can plug a 5-pin DIN MIDI keyboard into it (or sequence it). And it least it HAS the notes on the black keys.
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 - The BPM button confuses me - can you only pick 80, 100, 120 BPM, or can you tweak further (to, say, 108, 112, etc) using the knobs?
Don't worry. You can totally tweak the BPM to any whole numbers between 60 and 240 BPM.
I agree about the synth OPs. I'd personally get a volca I think. Because you can midi sequence.
But with the drum machine it's all about patterns and pattern chaining.

I had a go on the Volca FM in the shop where I bought the OP12.
Now that would be a smart budget buy IMO... So many different sounds possible to get out of that. And it sounded great.
Which shop was that? I'm still waiting for mine and the order is delayed until August...

Wunjo is where I bought my ukulele a few years ago. Just round the corner, there’s Rock Stop, where I’ve bought lots of synth gear over the decades, and my K-Board before Christmas (the guys in Rock Stop are familiar with me from back in the ’90s, so I always try and plug them where poss. — being round that corner, people can more easily miss them what with the Crossrail massacre of central London).

I hate the crypticness of the unit but love it nonetheless. Its amazing I just have had trouble with fiction button and live recording versus step.

It is VERY 8-bit sounding. So you need to like that sound in your drums or you might not like it.
I generally like it. I get weird looks on the train. I don't really mind.
Programming it is a little fiddly to be honest. But once you have your patterns, jamming with it is quite nice.
Yeah good shop that, I went and bought their last Volca FM I think Had a look at the OPs too, quite tempting.....
