I have a few questions regarding AU apps, cubasis, and Link

I am going to make this short and to the point. I am brand new to cubasis. I purchased the discounted full version inside the LE version, but it still shows as LE.Do I truly own the full version now? It came with my mixer and it was discounted. I have tons of effects I use on a daily basis. Are the in app purchases that much better than AUFX, Holderness, Blamsoft, and sugar bytes? Any word on if any of those effects plan on getting Audio Unit support? Will Cubasis get Abelton Link support, or is there something I am overlooking? I usually just press record to audio share and improvise, but lately with all these new abelton link updates to my old apps the feature has garnered my curiosity. If there are amy Cubasis pro's out there with some tips for me I would greatly appreciate the help. :#

    Hi TheMaestro,

Cubasis LE is identical to the full version of Cubasis, once the app has been upgraded to the "Full feature set" available via in-app purchase. Due to Apple restrictions the app and the app icon remains to show up as "Cubasis LE", while the welcome screen displays "Cubasis" from there on.

The next Cubasis update which includes many new features is under development and will be announced once it becomes available.

I leave it to the community to reflect on the effect questions.

    Have great fun with Cubasis
    & best wishes,
    Lars

  • Thanks for the snappy reply Lars! I am glad it came with my mixer, as I have had my eye on this for a long time. I have only scratched the surface of this massive DAW. I haven't even touched the one I downloaded for my macbook yet.
    Thanks again,
    -Kevin

    You're welcome, Kevin.

Feel free to browse our Cubasis tutorials that might be helpful in getting familiar with the app the fastest way:

  • Prepare to enter the minefield LOL

It is very unlikely that Cubasis will get link support until it can do real-time time stretching of audio, unless it gets link for MIDI tracks Only which wouldn't be wholly useful, or a Link Master mode, which would go against what link is meant to be.

Link is useful if you want to do any of the following
    Keep 2 sequencers in sync
Keep time based modulations in sync across apps, e.g having a delay time in an external effect stay in time with the sequencer or having a synth LFO synced to the beat.
Link will not help you start multiple sequencers in time though, just keep them in time once they are running.
Remember though that MIDI clock will sync and start other sequencers, and Cubasis can act as a master clock. (There is also MIDI Link Sync which is an app that will convert MIDI Clock to Link enabling you to keep link apps synced to a midi master clock). Warning here is that MIDI Clock is not very well implemented in ALL apps, in some it works well, in others not so much.

I have moved away from Cubasis for the time being because I am working on a particular part of my project based around live performance which for me cubasis is not really suited to, but I WILL be coming back to it when i am ready to start recording that performance.

The main benefit of using AUFX or Blamsoft or whatever, is that you can use them in any host app (IAA for AUFX and AU for Blamsoft) and not just Cubasis. In terms of the effects themselves the ones in the in IAPS for cubasis are very nice sounding and easy to use within cubasis. I don't own all of the effects available from the different dev's so would not want to start trying to compare them quality wise.
One drawback of the IAA based effects is that you can only use them on one track at a time, AU effects (not to be confused AUFX which are IAA effects) like the blamsoft ones can be used many times on different tracks, the effects in cubasis can be used on multiple tracks within cubasis

I understand midi, link, sync ect... I use a few pieces of gear which are hooked up to my mixer. Tempo sync has never been a problem for me at all especially with the new USB 3.0 adapter which allows my Krome workstation and Kaossilator Pro to work together just as if it were routed in any daw on the computer. Link simplifies the process that is for damn sure! I can always use the hardware link that Alexander has created as well with one of my old irig midi1. I am very pleased with what this DAW has given me so far. The Yamaha MG10XU has onboard effects and so does the Kaos Pro as well as a dynamic mic input. I also have a Tascam Dr-05 which I sometimes can use to power my condenser with an onboard limiter, eq, about six reverbs. The dr-05's onboard condenser mics are actually quite nice. Cubasis allows me to get away from the computer as well as creatively mix. I can bounce to any DAW of my choice. I am sure any of the other big competitors can do the same, but it came as a discount and I am I pleased  The sounds are a huge plus as well. I am just really interested in more AU's. Blamsoft was a huge blueballs in terms of showing the capability of iOS. I can only imagine audio units for AUFX that would be incredible.

@j_liljedahl has said that he would like to do the AUFX series as AU's but there is no schedule for that as yet.

  • @AndyPlankton That is going to be glorious my friend.

  • yes those Blamsoft AU plugins have been a game changer for me. TC Electronic too. AUFX will help seal the deal.

Apart from the fact that we will all be moaning that our iPad Air 1 and Mini 2's cannot cope with 10 x that new Ruisomething AU Drum synth and 10 x AUFX Push and AUFX Dubs all running at the same time :D

  • @AndyPlankton I still can't believe my iPhone 6s is more powerful than my iPad mini 4 which is really fast. If you know what you are doing you can run on 10 percent cpu max with an outboard mixer or interface. If you run the new moog model 15 app you are looking at a massive spike in CPU. I hope they can address this in the next update, because something in the code is causing a memory leakage. This could mean it was rushed to get out in time for moog fest. It still runs great, but if you want a super synth you might end up getting 50 percent and up in CPU usage.

  • Still on a Mini 2 here, and no iphone to offload stuff to. Have to keep the FX to a minimum if I wanna use lots of tracks. No heavy reverbs here :D
