ApeSoft's Stria, iDensity and iPulsaret bundle
I've been sniffing around the granular things for a little while, I grabbed Borderlands 2 months ago and whilst I really like the unique interface, it still felt limited in terms of educating myself on the grain synthesis concepts.
ApeSoft has only been on my radar for like 2 days and whilst things like Grain Science seem to get more general love, there was something so appealing about the iDensity's minimalist style and the fact ApeSoft are doing this bundle.
At first I found all three of them a little bit daunting particularly with iDensity's cryptic icons and needing to delve into the user guide to work out what everything means.
IPulsaret has been the easiest to dive into and I have totally fallen in love,
I've wrapped my head around iDensity this morning and still need to venture into Stria.
Does anyone here use or understand Stria? It's perhaps the least user friendly so far.
Comments
I tried for a while with stria and did get some fun things out of it, but most of the time things ended up sounding very similar. Not sure if I was "doing it wrong". I was thinking I should have bought iPulsaret instead at the time (haven't used it).
I deleted iPulsaret , and Stria is only still on my pad as I haven't got round to removing it yet - best I can get out if it are some feeble squeaks . Weird how poor these are in comparison to iDensity , which is in my top 5 fave apps
Ipulsaret is the granular toolkit,
Stria is the fm toolkit,
(IDensity is ipulsarets little brother, ipulsaret is the big boy)
I was in a few bands that would have been better off being called The Feeble Squeaks....
Lol . Could be worse , my other half came in while I was listening back to one of my recordings and said 'what's that noise ? Oh, I thought it was a lawn mower or something'
thanks for pointing them out, i almost somehow missed them. nuclear powered synthesis bundle completed!
Enjoy.
Together with ivcs3 it's really nuclear powered synthesis if you are into out there sounds and synthesis.
For bread and butter look elsewhere.
IDensity just got ableton link, ipulsaret coming up next
Of the three, I prefer to spend any time with Stria. I understand all three, but I have a thing against the popular granular effect (it isn’t synthesis). Stria’s harmonic control is quite enjoyable.
"synthesis"
noun
1.
the combination of components or elements to form a connected whole.
granular fits ok in my book
In that case the definition is incorrect and requires changing, backdated. Otherwise you’d classify stereo as a form of synthesis.
its similar to wavetables
but instead of surfing around in carefully created wavetables
its surfing aroundin any audio sample or live audio you want ...
why shouldn't this form of sound creation be called synthesis?
_A sound synthesizer (usually abbreviated as "synthesizer" or "synth", also spelled "synthesiser") is an electronic musical instrument that generates electric signals that are converted to sound through instrument amplifiers and loudspeakers or headphones. Synthesizers may either imitate instruments like piano, Hammond organ, flute, vocals; natural sounds like ocean waves, etc.; or generate new electronic timbres. _

@u0421793 I smell a "WTF Do These Buttons Do?" coming on.
Oh, gee! So many buttons there...
I’ve pressed them, and found out.
These are the type of apps I go into a cave with and emerge having explored all the nooks and crannies without looking at the manuals. Usually it's the other way around. I read the manual several times with the app open in front of me.
I believe I am starting to understand what the controls do, somewhat.
I absolutely adore iPulsaret, however there are a few niggly problems ive had with it through Audiobus: audio dropping out entirely when trying to recreate a set up.
I feel thats the problem with this audiobus's gig; its a recipe for bugs the more you push your luck.
Not sure what is going on, can you give me more details on your setup what you are doing and what is happening?
Does anybody have some advice on how to trigger the streams in Idensity with midi?
I tried to set it up with modstep but could not get it to work.
I seem to remember you have to select the iDensity port in iDensity midi settings and the iDensity port in Modstep for it to work.
with idensity the intention appears to be that you control everything via cc, including pitch
also, it appears to be seriously buggy. i assign cc to pitch, it ends up on random length. i assign cc to play stop and it seems to go nowhere...time to talk to the dev
Thanks for the input. I got the first stream to trigger, but the last five doesn't seem to be working. The worst part is that bindings seem to get lost or unlearned when you change presets. Guess I will just load it into AUM and automate the faders instead...
dev responded in five minutes (!!!) to say the cc bug is being fixed
they also said they are thinking of adding individual midi note control of each stream, maybe if they got some more positive encouragement...
have you got "include control manager in presets" checked on in the settings? should be off or presets will have different bindings.
To me that definition also accurately describes any assembled physical or virtual construction, set of ideas, philosophical school of thought, pedagogy, method, authored text, train set, or a shoe.
And maybe Lego.
I have - will turn it off. And I will write them a letter of appreciation. Thanks guys.
Yeah it's a great word and is an idea or concept which applies to many things not just audio, relating to artificial constructed materials, hence the word synthetic etc
I guess people obsessed by audio automatically assume it's a word which relates to their process alone
