A quick question about the BS 16
OK so can I get sound fonts into the bs16 without having to leave the comfort of my iPad, and if I can..how...also do the Proteus fonts come pre installed...thanks
Comments
You should be able to "open in..." as long as its in *.sf2 format only or you extract a .rar in something like GoodReader and its in *.sf2 format. It has a generic GM sound bank installed. I've actually been playing around a lot with this lately and there are some great SoundFonts. One I like has a ton of great quality stuff is Evanessence 2, off KVR, but its a ginormous file so I use an SF program and split it up into a couple diff SoundFonts. I took all drum kits (some great ones) and put in one SF, and then some general instruments strings, brass, keys, guitars. Another great soundfont by itself is Roland SC-55, its only 10-20mb depending on the versions and has great quality and lots of variety with not much space!
Fancy sharing the sf2 files?
Me? Sure but not the Evanessence one, its like over a gig I believe. I've minimized two diff packs one with all drum kits from it, and one with general instruments each are about 199mb and I'll upload the Roland SC-55 version I have.
All a little later when I get home from work
Thanks, those are the ones I meant.
So I went ahead and broke down Evanessence further into subgroups for ya'll. Evanessence itself is a whopping 1.64 GB, so I did my best to remove "unneeded" and felt I couldn't strip it anymore than I did and I tried to keep a balance for the people that have limited space (like myself) and the people who don't. There are 6 different files, each will be zipped by itself so you don't have to download one giant file if you don't want everything. I will also place a link to a free program that I use to edit/create soundfonts, its super easy.
Please note, I did NOT create these myself, they were extracted from the Evanessence 2 soundfont (last updated 05/2013) I DL'd from KVR forum, I simply created "sub-soundfont groups" and removed some things. These are very high quality soundfont instruments, sure there may be some that aren't great mixed in but the good outweighs the bad.
When you download the RAR files, you'll then have to unzip it with something like GoodReader, then "Open In...BS-16i". Below will be the groups, sizes (compressed/uncompressed), and download links for Dropbox. Enjoy!
String & Brass (193/341mb)
Brass & Strings Revised (168/297mb)
Piano & Organ (86/273mb)
Guitar & Bass (121/271mb)
Drums (70/199mb)
Worldwide (12/25mb)
Roland SC-55 (15/25mb)
Roland SC-55 is a great all-around soundfont only 25 mb and has a ton of instruments loaded with quality and variety

Let me know if you have any issues with files, links, etc...Profit!

Thanks @JMSexton!
Stellar, thanks!
I think the string and brass file may still be a bit big. It downloaded and unarchived just fine, but once it was in the library list, bs-16 crashed out and I was unable to get it to start again until I had removed the file using iFunbox.
Thanks @ JMSexton. What's the easiest way to get files from dropbox to good reader?
@mgmg4871 download, open in....GoodReader, extract inside GoodReader, then open in BS-16i
@PaulB that's probably right I know I had to other files one was 100mb and the other 200mb. They would each load fine by themselves in the first slot but if I tried to load the second in the second slot of BS-16i it would crash. I'll try to reduce it further tonight at work
@JMSexton Thanks, but file will not download, I can only add to dropbox.
Works fine for me. Select file, looks like 3 ton of gibberish go to right top corner and open in nave ( the forwarding via email/twitter type button)
Maybe it's the browser I'm using. I'm using Skyfire.
Sorry my mistake. I downloaded to Dropbox and then did all that. Thanks for the links @JMSexton. Can't have too many of these things.
Download works fine in Safari on iPad.
can go more direct: copy the link, switch to GoodReader, enter URL in Web Download (it preloads the dialog box for you), then Manage Files, select the dl'ed file, "Open In". Takes longer to describe than do. Also effectively keeps a backup for you , so it's a good idea to move the file somewhee safer after loading it into BS 16i or Nave (or whatever)
@PaulB Thanks. Safari worked.
OK So am I right in thinking that the GoodReader everyone is talking about is the PDF Reader..please excuse my ingnorance here..
@dwarman - that is exactly what I do, copy the link and pop it into GoodReader's download manager.
@thesoundtestroom - easentially yes, but it works great as a file manager, zip/unzip utility with access to the cloud, dropbox, sky drive, etc etc
Thanks Jarrett...I like the idea of getting lots of soundfonts..but I really only wanted to do it via iPad and not have the hassle of the computer thing..this way sounds great...
Recently I've gotten into them big time! Also if anyone doesn't have GoodReader its def worth picking up, you can do a ton with it, basically file management, "open in...", zip/unzip, send to the cloud, download manager, connect to almost all online storage mediums (send & receive), FTP, and WiFi transfer.
Back to SoundFonts, there are some great quality instruments out there and they take up minimal storage. BS-16i is a fantastic little SF player, love the velocity sensitivity of the keys and ability to have so many channels and etc.
Just got to work. Will try to reduce size and reupload the Strings & Brass file in a bit and will put up a new link and let y'all know!
BTW Any thoughts on any of them?
One of the best pdf readers too. I keep pdfs of all my iPad synth user manuals in it.
But that is but one one of its many features.
GoodReader also connects to other computers in your home network, including WebDAV, ftp, sftp (run sshd on your Linux or Apple computer; not found a reliable Windows server for this yet)., smb (Windows), and afp (Apple). You can also connect to GoodReader from any browser to browse its filesystem on your iPad (NB: GoodReader's files, not the iOS filesystem, sorry, use FunBox or iExplore for that) and upload/download that way.
Just be careful re memory. If you put a large compressed file in, unzip it and put in bs12 you've still got those 2 bulky files on your iPad
As an aside, I may be being thick here, but I haven't found a way to unload the default sf2 file from library slot 1 in bs-16. Any others, there's a Clear option that pops up, but not for the default.
You're right @PaulB and that's actually cause an issue for me before, I deleted an SF2 file in iFunBox and it was still actively loaded and it kept crashing when I'd try to load something (I believe that's how it happened anyway, I know it gave me an issue).
IFunbox was what sorted my crashing problem out, as it was the only way to stop bs-16 trying to load the string and brass sf2 file on startup. Everything is working fine with the smaller files and the default GM file.
There ya go! I left the other up as well, so if you want the smaller Brass & Strings Revised one just below String & Brass. I cut down as much as I knowingly could and felt that I couldn't remove anymore.
iFunBox ultimately helped me too! Mine will only let me load one of the large files at a time, if I try to load two large files in bank one & two it crashes, but o well i don't mind just switching when I need it.
Actually I think I'm gonna jump this over to a new discussion/thread. Make sure to check it out because I've added two more files Orchestrated and Guitarded both take up hardly any space and offer good selection and variety.
Many thanks for these. I used the free WinZip and it worked fine - download to Dropbox, then Open In WinZip, and from there Open In BS-16i
New thread with new soundfonts including smaller ones here...
