What's your preferred method for sequencing ios synths?
For various reasons I'm trying to do this without extra gear, so no external midi keyboard for me (thus far). So far I've found that Cubasis is great until I want to do heavy editing in the piano-roll and Auria is great except for the rigmarole I have to go through to record midi with an onscreen keyboard.
I've been looking at GB It's great in many ways with the audio units and all, but I've got a stack of IAA synths that I'd like to record in the midi domain. Would Modstep be any easier? Or should I forget my on-screen keyboard dream and just pull out the old nanokey, so to speak?
Comments
GB also has the drawback of no midi in or out, as far as I can see.
I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that Cubasis 2.0 will deliver some major improvements when it comes to the piano-roll and general editing because I love the way it's easy to sequence stuff and freeze it to Audio-tracks.
From what I've gathered here at the forums ModStep is still a bit it unreliable as AU/IAA host but appears to function well when used for pure-midi and doing all the recording in AUM.
I do have som external controllers but prefer to use the iPad as a 'stand-alone' device with occasionally attaching some stuff such as iRig Mic HD, Line6 MobileIn, UCA-202 or iRig Pads/Keys. (I'm practicing playing chords on 4x4 pads just for fun).
Modstep, albeit still very cerebral as far as CC automation is concerned.
For simpler stuff Xynthesizr.
Gadget still remains the King for me as far as sequencing is concerned.
Can you load ios synths into Gadget or Xynthesizer?
In Gadget no ... Good sequencer : modstep, genome ,Infinite Looper, jam maestro (If you are guitarist) , Koushion , TNR i , pro midi ...If you Want full daw : auria, cubase, MTS , music studio, fl studio .Good arpeggiator : Cream kirnu, steppolyarp, arpeggionome ,xynthesizr...
You use all those to sequence ios synths?
Can't load them into Xynthesizr but you can drive them via midi.
You can't drive other synths via Gadget but internal gadget synths are pretty good IMO that's why I often end up going that route. I know it wasn't your original question.
Not all but i use MTS , genome ,modstep ...Auria is probably the best i guess, but too expensive for me and i have not enough Storage in my air. There was a sale on genome recently (check it) or have a look on modstep ...Donno What are your needs exactly ...
Genome is getting Link soon. I've been using it lately to sequence AU synths in AUM. Despite its limitations it's been working well for me.
I've spent a fair bit of time getting to know NLog, Cassini, Magellan, Addictive, Laplace. I would like to sequence them and other synths using an app that follows the traditional desktop paradigm you see in Logic or Cubase. That's why I gravitate to Cubasis and Auria. I'm trying to avoid anything that smacks of patterns and scenes (I've only recently become aware of this antipathy).
@supadom
"Can't load them into Xynthesizr but you can drive them via midi".
Do you mean exporting midi files or something else?
Some days I miss my MMT-8.
I agree here... For me It's a waste of time to 'jam' with a 'pattern-looper' tweaking the sounds when the changes can not be recorded as midi to a Time-Line for further editing...
Imagine if Gadget and ModStep had a Time-Line and you could make a few 'backing-loops' and then play on top of that and everything was recorded linearly for further editing it would be really nice and also allow for import of complete midi-tracks to the Time-Line...
The pattern/scene approach does not replace a Time-Line but rather complements for arrangement purposes so I still hope both ModStep and Gadget will get a proper Time-Line mode in the future.
Xynthesizr can do MIDI out, so you can drive other iOS synths with it.
@markk Then if looping and patterning are the problem, I guess you should dig and stay with cubase and auria(anyway if you have them you get already the Best daw) .MTS is timeline too, but useless if you have already those.Jam maestro is a tablature timeline.Wait and see for what Will offer the New Beatmaker and FL Studio in the next century
If a critical mass of IAA synths go the AU route, and Garageband iOS gets support for AU insert effects and sends it could be the one. Hopefully soon.
Cubasis is pretty close too just needs the interface and workflow to be rethought and streamlined for composition purposes. Hopefully 2.0 will accomplish this.
I had one at one stage in the late ’90s (and an HR16B). I recorded about three thrashes of a chord from my guitar hex pickup into an old and horrendous GM-70 guitar to midi interface, and the MMT-8 gave up with an error message on the LCD “Bummer dude, memory full!”.
Xynthesizer, Bassline, MidiSequencer, Rubycom, and lately I have been using Medley as a sort of quasi-sequencer.
Mpc 1000 and ableton live! Sorry other than patterning for certain things ios sequencing is a pain in the ass I gave up on!
Haven't seen Fugue Machine mentioned yet.
For me, it's Modstep, Xynthesizr and Fugue Machine
Apparently he doesnt like Looper ,Arp and pattern sequencer. If I understand well he needs something like Logic or a good update for cubasis and auria ...After reading this tutorial on sidechaining By kaikoo i saw that in MTS pro up grade there were a sidechain Compressor plug (basic but decent) .And MTS is the lighter for cpu,for storage and the cheaper (full for 50 dollars) ...Sometimes i would like one those real DAW (cubasis n auria) but AppStore reviews said they are slow with older devices (air for me) cpu hungry, and too expensive for a poor french Guy like mee.And we Forget Aum ,without this my workflow would be sehr Kaputt
I like to send Fugue Machine, Patterning and Thumbjam out to Cubasis and or Gadget for the initial sketch when I dont have my laptop. I then export the midi file to PC. An hour of editing on ipad seems like five minutes with mouse and keyboard.
I arrange my iPads in a row
(Sorry - being silly )
For multiple synths, one of: Genome, mSequencer (aka MIDI pattern sequencer), Auria Pro, Cubasis. Depending on what I'm doing.
For single synths: Thesys, midiSequencer.
There are certainly iOS apps that can listen/record or export MIDI data into a DAW. The advantage of having flexible MIDI app options is that you can take advantage of some of the creative playing/sequencing options rather than restricting yourself to the traditional DAW based piano roll.
Personally, I prefer to spend most of my time playing music and have relatively little interest in polishing my creations for future generations to appreciate.
