connecting scarlett 2i4 with iPad Air (iOS 9.3.2)

Hi, I'm having a problem connecting 2i4 and iPad Air.

I've got lightning camera kit and powered USB 2.0 hub to connect, when I connected 2i4 to iPad Air, it says "can't use the device. Scarlett 2i4 is not supported"
even the iPad recognizes "scarlett 2i4"....

on the 2i4, when it's connected, pad led and USB led are on.

Could anyone tell me what's wrong?

Thanks.

  • It might just be a bad connection, or maybe your hub or power supply. I have a 2i4 and it connects to the iPad Air 2 OK.

Hi, thanks for your comment. I think my powered USB hub is something wrong....
What kind of powered USB hub do you use?

  • My 2i2 does the same thing and I believe you have to buy some extra cables and adapters to get it to work. I said fuck it and just routed the headphone jack to my mixer which does work with iOS.

    Hey, thanks for your comment.
I found this article, this might work though have to spend more money to make it work :(
    http://www.thediligentmusician.com/2014/09/how-to-use-focusrite-scarlett-2i2-with.html

I really wanna use multiple outputs from iPad.... I might try the hub (better than mine for sure) on the article.

  • Yeah I read that exact same article a long time ago when trying to plug it into to my USB 3 adapter. No way I am buying the old CC adapter, and xy cables, I consolidated to a yamaha mixer and I will never look back. So glad I didn't get the smaller Alesis one.

Just make sure the hub is powered before you plug in the cck. Should solve your problem.

Yeah, if that works for you. I think USB 3 camera kit still should work, just need the Y split cable, (the hub between the camera kit and Y cable still needed?) and the rechargeable battery or wall mount adaptor (more than 2.1A)?

I need to get the bass sound separate to the bass amp from iPad DAW so I need multiple output from iPad using the audio interface....

Yes, I tried everything I could, it seems just the hub (cheap hub) doesn't recognize 2i4 somehow....
Do you know which hub I should use (gonna work for sure) ?

  • I use a mini hub (unpowered), a small portable battery (5A) and a Y splitter cable. All works with no issues. As you say it's probably your hub that's the problem.

I think that's the best way to make it work... Do you know if USB 3 Camera Kit(which can charge iPad if it's connected to power supply) also needs "mini hub" to make it work?
(someone said "somehow it needs non powered hub between the camera connector and Y cable" with old version of the camera kit)
I'm thinking to get that instead of old version USB camera connector.

  • Sorry I don't know if the new camera connection kit can work without a hub. You would think it should but as I haven't used it myself I can't confirm.

O.K. I will try it and let you know. Thanks ;)

The new cck fixed the problem with my novation Audiohub (which needed the hub with the old cck) . Don't need a separate hub anymore. So I think it should work with you too.

Oh, that's great to know!! Thanks for letting me know.
So if I wanna use wall mount power supply for 2i4 instead of the battery, how many ampere required? 2.1A power supply works or needs 2.4A or more?

is the 2i4 bus powered ? if yes you can use the Ipads default charger. it can keep my ipad charged and also power on the audiohub. i just need to use the audiohubs wall socket if i need the extra usb ports.

Yes, 2i4 is bus powered. I will try iPad charger and see if it works, if I need extra wall socket, I will buy another USB power supply.
    Thanks for the information :)

  • Hi there, I have a question for anyone using this 2i4 interface with an iPad... is it possible to create a separate headphone cue mix? For example, is it possible to hear a click track with the main mix in the headphones without hearing the click track in the main speaker outs?

@richardyot - can you provide links for the unpowered mini hub you use and the the portable battery? Would really appreciate it!
