Open letter to Novation, Akai, Retronym, Arturia : a method to be heard ?
Dear all Audiobus users
I would like to point out something that bugs me.
As I'm french, sorry if it's not perfect english, hope it will be clear enough.
I really don't think I'm winning, I honestly think this discussion is fair.
I've been having fun with music for more than 25 years now. I started with mod trackers on Amiga 500 and that kind of stuffs...
Anyway, I'm not a wizard at all, I just like to have fun with music and friends.
20 years ago, big companies like Ensoniq, Korg, Yamaha etc...were upgrading their firmware thru roms, it was really funky...
Now with apps, all comes in a second with the apps upgraded with our new god : Internet.
That's so cool obviously.
Also, midi implementation was the basic of the basics to get your new synth or effects integrated into your home studio.
At that time a nice classic reverb was at least 150 € (yes...) but it was driven thru midi, there was no question about it.
Since there is musical apps on Ipad, it seems some companies have lost their memory...Of course, some very talented "kids" developper might not be knowing everything about midi, but as soon as they heard about that, they make their best to fix that.
But some big companies seems absolutely death about that, witch is just incredible.
Japanese companies like Korg or Yamaha seems to respect much more their customers that they have for the last 35 years, and don't forget about the strong past technology. Waldorf (German company) seems also respectful of these standards. (with Nave for instance)
Nevertheless, other companies like Novation, Arturia, Akai (with Retronyms) seems more investing into talented head marketing rather than excellent coders. I mean there's brilliant coders in these companies of course, but the guys on top of them seems to be huge noobs, as musician, and as technical guru's. I admit, they have very talented designers interfaces, workflow are ofter very neat.
This is not just about hardware companies, we can see that in France with cars like Renault witch are investigating more in advertising, design, and fancy stuffs, rather than making solid cars like they used to do 30 years ago.
As I really don't like junk food, I don't like junk apps either. I also hate being foolish, I guess we all do.
Some say not having some features is not the end of the word, and I totally agree with that, but while you got all basics gone away, like midi, but also glitches, and no way to backup or transfer your work, I just ask myself why we should continue that way...
Personally, I moved to Ipad (I was making music on Pc, Cubase and plugins...) but I wanted more portability, and something stable like only Apple could do (I was naïve, I must admit...)
Recently, I opened a ticket on Arturia support, for a feature request to load sounds thru Program change. This is somethig very basic in midi world. Imagine you're making a track with Cubasis, on each track you assign midi track, a synth is played.
If you have 10 different synths, on each track you add a Program Change MSB/LSB to load the sound you've saved previously.
It's really handy to load quickly an old track, and to keep working on it.
Evasive answer is always : Thanks for your request, we are passing to the developers.
Then you wait, then upgrade of something else, but not this then nothing.
Then I asked them how they would prioritise my issue...
**Arturia support answer **
Hi.
Each case that will treat about the same subject will be referenced under the same parent case.
The more complaints / FR we have, the higher will be the priority.
Best Regards
And that make sense, if nobody ask for that, why would they integrate that ?
But I think there's also other reasons...
First people that really knows midi, might not finalising their work on Ipad, it's because it's quite a new market.
So I think there's few demands for that because midi specialists are mainly not (yet) on Ipad.
Second, I also think big companies are affraid of cannibalisation of their hardware due to the possible quality of their apps : if it's upgradable, if it's sound so good, if it's so cheap, we'll just be selling apps and not hardware anymore...
Third, I think they might want you to get addict with enough funny stuffs into apps to sell after that the hardware, and also the desktop versions, more expensive...
Fourth, they might just don't give a f***
Fith : I'm crazy, and I've lost you after "Dear Audiobus users".
Anyway, recently I also see that big companies are announcing their products here, in our community, and exchange with us, witch is apparently very good, but I also see that every serious issue they have, they ask you to send you a mail to "support" bla bla, and laconic answers like "yes we know, we're on it" then , they come back with "look we've integrated new colors into our interface, see, how cool is our new soundpack".
Ok I'm unfair, this is not just about that, I'm really tacky, I know it's not that simple, but as I said, I have memory, I know midi, I know why we can't go, as musician, to the next level with Ipads... Of course there's also code issues (see the beautiful post on "4 common mistakes in code recently by Michael ) and I'm completely incompetent into this, all I can say is : f*** there's some glitches, I can't use that brilliant s*** app...again...
To avoid that useless uncreative anger, and keeping peace on these forums, and to react as conscientious customers,
I think we should organise something here in the forum, like if you have an issue, you post it here, you open a support ticket to the related ticket system of the company, and also one post here with a copy of your request, then everybody that see this issue here, open's a ticket to the ticket system of the company...
Each person that opens a ticket, post here a message like "done".
Like this we will know approximatively how many support ticket it takes until they take our issue seriously...
I think these companies must understand that using our community to advertise is really fine, but the community has also the right to ask back for someone we pay to be more in adequacy with our needs.
I'm not encourage for spamming or any agressive methods : just opening a ticket in their company workflow, that they obviously protecting by advertising here, and reporting here.
Next step, if they don't want to integrate our (fair, once again, I'm not talking about having the button pink instead of yellow...) requests, to send mail to their manager. Or maybe you might have other ideas about that ?
Opened to suggestions, and feedback...If you just agree with all this, maybe just respond with a "I'm in" to see if you see my point, and you would like to follow these kinds of actions.
Thanks if you had the courage for reading...
Ah, one last thing, here's the list of my demands (or I will kill a cat every hours )
To Novation :
For LaunchPad 2 :
-one time loop WITH playing to the end of loop BEFORE goes to an other loop. (this is also the case for Blocs Wave BTW, with sections, but also the loops into the sections...)
Without this, it makes impossible to stop or play a loop entirely, and makes something else on an other app...You need to focus on LP "center of the universe app" only...pfff...
-midi sync slave
-midi learn (same problem for Blocs Wave)
-IMPORT/EXPORT/Backup of your tracks and parameters !!!! Can you believe that as a pro app, you can never make any backup of anything ???? So new ipad : new everything ???!!
For Blocs Wave:
-midi learn (same problem for Blocs Wave)
-IMPORT/EXPORT/Backup of your tracks and parameters !!
-Start / Stop at the end/beginning of a cycle of a loop...
To Arturia :
-Just add selection of sound thru midi !!! On all your synths !
To Retronym:
- Well...I don't think of any demand right now, but watch out, we have our eyes on you...
Cheers...
