(Off Topic) Need advice on USA[solved]

My son moved to the States 3 weeks ago, got a job and lives in Boston Mass. area.

He needs to open a bank account and get a portable phone service...(amongst other things)

What do you recommend for telephone service? He's got an unblocked Samsung...are the good services?

What about banks?
My apologies if this is a ridiculous question, but he works a lot and doesn't have much time to investigate.
Thanks in advance

  • everything here is hopelessly corrupt, hope that helps

  • Thanks @anickt , really appreciate your info.
    Just curious......
How much do you people pay a month on average for mobile service in US?

Yes it does, he needs an averagely corrupt bank :) ....banks are banks aren't they? They will always be corrupted, I was looking for a bank that doesn't screw him with hidden fictious services....
    Thanks @rhcball

  • small credit unions are much easier to deal with and are far less corrupt. my mega corporate bank likes to reorder my transactions to maximize fees and also hits me with a monthly poverty fee

  • Stay away from Bank of America, they employ their own modern Pinkerton police squad to monitor 'troublemakers.'

  • What @dreamless said... find the local bank or credit union and get to know the people in there.

Wireless costs have gotten more competitive but still vary substantially. If your son anticipates being in rural areas a lot, Verizon has the best coverage but is relatively expensive. If he will be in urban areas mostly, some of the budget carriers (T-Mobile for instance) are good though and cheaper.

  • +1 to local.

Funny thing, was watching minions last night on TV with my daughter, and there is the Verizon guy "Can you hear me now?" Working for Sprint. lol........

  • Can't help with the banking, but Page Plus has been great for cell service. They lease Verizon's network, so it works anywhere verizon does, but is cheaper. My bill is $30/mo for an iphone. You can use any phone that works on verizon's network (CDMA type). If you son's phone is GSM type, the kind that take SIM cards, then it won't work, but there are similar services that lease time on AT&T's network, for similar prices, for those phones.

  • Many thanks to all of you, really appreciate your feedback.

It's his first time in US, and you know...worrying dad (and mom) :#

And I left Boston some 20 odd years ago...so not much help, things change fast....

  • I have a friend that moved to New Jersey about 5 years ago from Haiti. I'll call him and see if he has any ideas.

Thanks, please don't bother other people on my sons account...he will figure out in time, the problem was that he needed to open an account so he can deposit checks and get a telephone service, because without one he couldn't get the other...catch 22 :D

PS thanks @Processaurus , good info, I think he will get a good new phone too, his Samsung is dying and its with a SIM card
