or, does anyone recommend a forum that moght better suit my needs getting up and running with electric guitar and ios?
Can you clarify "very noisy"? Buzz? Ambient sound?
What app(s) are you using? It would help if you post a link to a recording of it.
I use an Apogee Jam for my input connection. It connects to the iPad or iPhone through the Lightning input w/ a CCK.
I've never used the iRig Pro, but I've always heard that connecting through the headphone jack does create some unwanted buzz.
You can usually find some used Apogee Jams for around $50 USD. Guitar Center's used section of their website seems to usually have some for sale.
I've got a variety of guitar interfaces for testing. Going through the dock port is your best option by far; the headphone jack has a lot of interference and crosstalk.
The Apogee Jam is my favorite, but the Line 6 Sonic Port, FocusRite iTrack Solo, and iTrack Dock, are all good. I'd recommend any of these. I'm mostly using the Dock these days, as it has inputs for both guitar and mic, and I don't need the portability that often.
It's worth checking if the guitar and instrument cable are operating cleanly; my Telecaster can tune into nearby electronics, and I was chasing a noise problem earlier this year that turned out to be a failing instrument cable.
Which amp sim are you using? Many of them have noise gates that you can enable.
In general, though, I've found my iPad guitar rig to have a lot less noise than the real-world rigs I've played, so it should be possible to get clean recordings.
Really? I will need to check into this.
IRig pro is what I use, and I don't find it noisy at all. I do have some fluorescent lights in my kitchen that can introduce some buzz, but turning those off kills that.
Are you going direct to the iPad/Phone through the lightening connector? Details about your setup could help.
I don't have an iRig Pro, but from what I can tell it does use the Lightning port, but doesn't seem to have a headphone out.
Here's my guess, if @ichiro gets back; he mentions using headphones- I guess these have a mic built in, and he's plugging them in after the iRig. From what I've read around here, iOS will use whatever mic/out is plugged in last, so he may be hearing the headphone mic. Just a shot in the dark.....
