Is Z3TA functional? On iOS 9.3.2?

edited June 2016 in General App Discussion

I think I may finally get Z3TA, but it's been a year and a half since the last update, plus a few reviews mention problems.

I'm currently on iOS 9.3.2. Any reason to hold off for now?

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • It works.
The presets need a re-fresh however to show up when first opened. I press the menu and its shows up blank, close it and press again and it's all there?

  • I was just zoned out using it for an hour, no bugs or crashes evident.

  • Sounds good, but I'm very wary of Cakewalk's commitment to it.

It does work and is still one of the best sounding synths on iOS imho.
    Only minor annoyances
    -- presets load blank but appear on the next tap;
    -- Audiobus panel only works when you hold your iPad upside down;
-- IAA only works partly, you have to manually send the midi from AUM or Cubasis to Z3TA+

  • On the plus side it's $80 cheaper than the desktop version.

  • No multi touch support last I used it plus I get horrible noise when I use the built in delay.
There are many way better synth apps out there IMO!

  • One of my favorite synths - both on the desktop and on iOS. Works great on 9.3.2 with the exception of the minor issues that have already been mentioned by @nick.

It's due for an update, and I think it would be worth sending a note to Cakewalk about. They were responsive before when an update was needed, and the plain fact is, since they last did so, it's been working great and hasn't needed any further update. But, the above minor niggles could do with addressing now we're in 9 and nearly at 10. I agree.

I have no problem with any noise with the delay @jbvdb - can you elaborate with an example?

That's good to hear. I'll send an email

But that depends on when you buy, or bought it, most things Desktop have sales too.

Yeah I almost bought the VST cuz it's always on sale for $50

In the end, it really is a question of, if it's worth it to you, not really the quoted price, sale or not. Still a good synth though.

Well it has been a while as I no longer have it installed on my iPad. But whenever I sequenced it from my electribe I had to turn off the delay, it was unusable. Not a show stopper as I am not really a fan of built in effects in synths anyways.
The lack of multi touch was a turn off though.
It is a nice aggressive sounding synth but with all the others I have I didn't find that I used it enough to keep around!

  • For me Z3ta+ remains top shelf, no issues sequencing (in-device).

  • Went to see about contacting Cakewalk, only to get cold feet again seeing the hoops you have to jump through just to reach customer service.

Sounds like it's issues are not that significant, but are ones that don't pair well with my being repulsed by the small nagging annoyances concerning interconnectivity on iOS.

Maybe we'll see an update at some point, they are certainly due.

What's your likely use case for Z3ta? I might have the apps to test for you with the synth....

  • Preset saving is a bit dodge as spaces are removed from the name. If I enter a preset as "Awesome Preset" it's saved as "AwesomePreset".

It kind of varies, but at the moment I'm using IAA with Audioshare, AUM, and Auria for the most part, dealing with audio and not midi.

Though part of my hesitation also comes from not wanting to reward a developer not dedicated to the platform, and I must admit even the vanishing preset list would probably get on my nerves, so at this point I think I'll wait.

  • It's worth noting that the export preset function is broken and has been for ages and Cakewalk don't seem to respond to queries anout the app anymore.

    Great synth though.

Since Apple locked down file access I can't figure out any way to get presets from Ios to the VST. Is there a way?

I don't believe the developer who conceived it works at Cakewalk anymore.

  • I am going to send them a message on Twitter

Would that include the desktop version too? I would have thought there was more than a single developer of Z3TA+ overall. But, as we know from the iOS world, that isn't a necessity. Just curious.

Not trying to talk you into anything, but you should know the "vanishing preset list" bug is you have to tap the box twice when you first open the app.

Z3TA+ was developed by "rgcaudio" one of the quality plugin synth pioneers. Cakewalk aquired the company (and its developer) years ago.

A couple of google/LinkedIn searches seems to reveal that he has moved on after many years at Cakewalk. While I'm sure the code is maintainable I'm not sure sure there's still an energetic champion for it internally.
