AUM and modstep

So I have a song I'm happy with in modstep. I have several IAA apps loaded in it and a kind of complex, ever-changing clip sequence. But sometimes, the synths simply don't behave. They misfire, Sunrizer is playing all the midi, etc.

So. If I were to load all these apps in AUM, and just send the midi out from Modstep, could I control the clips within Modstep and record stems in AUM?

  • Yes I believe so.

    Absolutely yes.

  • So it's as simple as that?
    Holy shit. This is great!
One other question: impaktor really has no way to sync with AUM or other apps??

With impaktor the question is: is your timing good enough to sync with other apps?

Good question. Yes. Usually. (It does have quantization too.) but it seems pretty dodgy to have to hit the play button at the precise moment? I guess I could record an impaktor loop and send it to the Modstep sampler? Seems too complicated.

He's a bass player. His timing is better than the drummer. B)

Better solution is record a loop in aum. Then just trigger the file player in aum via modstep.
When link is enabled aum cuts the recording into perfect segments

Hah. That's what the drummer tells the bass player so he does all the soundchecks for him...

Yeah, I know. And then the bass player reminds the drummer how easily he can be replaced by a machine.

How do I trigger the file player in Modstep?

  • I mentioned it in a pm to you. I'll try make a tutorial when I get free.

    • Add a track in ModStep, select AUM and an unused channel as the MIDI out destination.
    • In AUM > MIDI Control > MIDI Sources' enable 'AUM Destination'
    • in AUM > MIDI Control > [channel you want to trigger] > Play Enable, select the channel and note you want to use. (Or select midi learn and then switch over to ModStep and play the note)
    • Trigger that note in a pattern in ModStep.

[edit] oh, and set the pattern in ModStep to trigger only once, or you'll toggle play on and off each time the pattern repeats.
