Any Magellan Users?
I believe I've I've found a nasty bug and I've had no response to support requests or forum posts for a week. Forum seems dead.
I apologize if this isn't the right place to ask, but I'm hoping perhaps one of you guys could please confirm something for me?
I've tried this on different devices/OS versions,
I'm running Magellan Jr, but curious if this also happens on the iPad version.
You'll need the stock Retro & Arps banks ( might work w/ others, though)
Use the internal clock, no other apps loaded.
- Load the app (kill it first if it's already in memory)
- Go to the Retro bank, load Armstrong (1st preset), and play a few notes.
- Got to MENU ---> Arp, and turn on the Arp. It should default to PERF MODE
- NOTE THE STATE OF THE KB HOLD BUTTON/LED. It should be off.
- Play a chord. Arp should be working as expected.
- Change to TRIG MODE. Program a few notes, but don't play anything on the keyboard.
- Change back to PERF MODE
- On my devices, the KB HOLD comes on and the programmed TRIG arp starts playing.
That is NOT the desired/expected/documented behavior
It gets worse from there. It seems every other preset is now affected until a re-load of the app.
- Go back and select the Vespucci preset. (2nd one in the Retro bank)
- Go to MENU ---> Arp
- Turn on the Arp.
- Even though it defaults to PERF, the KB HOLD comes on and the TRIG programmed in 6. above starts playing NOTE THAT THIS DID NOT HAPPEN IN STEP 3 ABOVE.
Even better: If you 'MIDI Learn' a cc to turn on/of the KB HOLD function, it only affects the KB HOLD 'LED', it does not turn off the actual hold function. It actually 'unsyncs' the LED from the real hold state, i.e. you can press the KB HOLD button and the LED turns off, but the actual hold function turns on.
Can anybody verify any of this and/or comment on whether this app is supported any more? Seems like a decent synth with a rich MIDI implementation if there's any hope of this being fixed. But otherwise it's a deal breaker for me (MIDI guitar controller)
Thanks!
Comments
Yes, with Magellan Jr this happens to me too.
Also I would say that
if arp is on, switching between trig and perf enables the kb hold button.
Are you sure its not a design 'feature'?
Ive just had a look on Magellan and its the same although its a different UI. I suspect this is a design feature more and more!
From the manual:
"In the PERF mode, the arpeggiated notes are input via the on-screen or external keyboard."
That is NOT what's happening when changing from TRIG to PERF MODE
If it's a "design feature', it's wrong.
One thing for sure: The broken MIDI control of KB HOLD is definitely NOT a design feature. Nor is the fact that when browsing/selecting presets, the KB HOLD will randomly turns on for some presets at some times, not at others, sometimes depending simply on whether browsing 'up' or 'down' in the list.
Glad I could help
You did. After 150 views on two different forums, you're the only one who responded. At least I know I'm not imagining it. And you saved me from wasting $15 on the iPad version in the hope that it wasn't similarly broken. If you're in NJ, I'll buy you a beer, lol. Money better spent. When I first discovered this "feature", I thought I could work around it by sending a MIDI command to turn off the KB Hold after every program change command. I eventually realized that there is currently no way to switch to a preset that has a "conventional' (i.e. just 'scan' the held down keys up/down/random, etc) arpeggiator without the KB Hold being activated. And there is no way to turn the damn hold off besides the actual UI button, even though it is supposed to be mappable to a MIDI cc. Since I'm a MIDI guitar guy, and Magellan would be running in the background (behind Lemur), that's a fatal bug unless someone can think of another solution that does not involve access to the Magellan UI. Thanks again.
Im a big Magellan fan but its got its faults. My advice would be forget to get Magellan to do what you want, even though it seems reasonable that it should do what it says in the manual. I'd pose a question here like, help needed triggering arp wih guitar through lemur or something like that. That sort of thing is going to get you the responses you want, I recon. Thanks for the beer invite, if you come to Valencia, Spain Ill take you up on it
Spain, now that's a nice place to have a beer, lol. re: ARP, I even tried to use Arpist to replace the Magellan arp. But even THAT hold function seems busted, i.e stuck 'on', and it looks like it's abandonware, forum also dead, etc. Might be another victim of iOS 9.xx, who knows. Even though I really don't have any room for it on my pedalboard, I bought an iPad Mini 2 on ebay last night, so it will give me a LOT more choices of synths with (hopefully...) working MIDI implementations and/or responsive developers. Hopefully, the A7 will be fast enough, seems adequate on the iPhone 5s on my pedalboard now. Really had high hopes for Magellan w/ all the great things I'd read about it, and the really rich MIDI controller mapping. Bummer.
Funnily, over the past few days I’ve been patching in Magellan. If anyone’s interested in trying the patches I’ve made lately, here, help yourself (there’s use of sequencer too):

I’m not sure which works best, individual patches or a patch bank, so I’ve put both – the patch bank IT (my initials) contain the same three patches as are individually listed, so have one or the other, otherwise you’ll end up with duplication.
I clicked on the first one and downloaded three interesting-sounding patches, but I'm not hearing any sequences. I may be doing something wrong. I love Magellan.
Hmm, that’s interesting. I’ve just deleted Magellan and reloaded it from the bank. All I’ve got now is one of the synths loaded, the other is still at its init patch, and the sequencer is blank. Bugger. What was supposed to happen was that the patch was supposed to save both synths and the sequencer state, but it has only saved the thing that I happened to be looking at in each case. That’s pretty useless. Now I’ve lost the second synth sound in each patch and the sequence too. What remains is the synth 1 of the first patch, the synth 2 of the second patch, and the synth 1 of the third patch. This is not what I expected.
Well, if I delete this app again it can stay deleted.
Not even the effects were preserved (I only switched the delay on). Total waste of time.
If you wrote your presets using both synths, did you save them with "synth couple" engaged? (No offense intended if you'd already gone over this)
No, I didn’t. Was that a thing?
If you programmed a voice in one synth and a sequence in the other, or your fx, in one and/or the other, and the synths were coupled when you programmed, you hear all of it, but the preset seems like it only saves one synth...I'm messing with it now, and it seems presets only contain one synth at a time. From what the manual says the preset system is one synth at a time....I actually just wrote the guy, seems if you're going to have a synth built around two independent synth engines (only one I know of in iOS) you'd want to be able to save the programming you've done in both engines to a single preset.
Littlewoodg, if you hear back from the Magellan dev, please post here. I sent him two support requests, posted on his forum, etc. 8 days ago. Crickets.
Will do, maybe dudes on vacation...
Thanks. I'm hoping there's some legitimate reason. Honestly, it just takes one sticky on a forum, or an email autoresponder.
