Ipad Pro 9.7 VS Ipad Pro 12.9 - RAM and Clock Speed

I have come across some information that states

Although the new 9.7 inch iPad Pro is superior to the 2015 12 inch iteration in some regards, including better cameras and display, it appears the raw processor is not as identical as Apple implied in its presentation. Although both models have an A9X processor, the 9.7 inch version actually has half the RAM and a slightly-lower clock speed CPU (via @panzer). Whilst the big iPad Pro has 4 GB RAM, the 9.7 inch iPad Pro has just 2 GB like the iPhone 6s.

Is this True ? thoughts ?

Comments

  • Yes. It's true.

  • The RAM part Its true, the 12.9 version has 4GB instead of 2 and from what I have read the processor it's indeed faster than the 9.7 version (not by much), also the iPad 12.9 it's the only one that supports USB 3 speeds for fast file transfers. The 9.7 version has true tone display (which I like), a better camera and Live Photos (but don't see the point of having a camera this good on the 12.9 version, I would feel ridiculous taking photos with it) and supports Siri on all the time wich the 12.9 version doesn't.

So yeah Apple didn't make the two iPad Pro models equal.

Having both I like the 12.9 version better and I can certainly do more stuff with it. In some apps (like GarageBand or gadget) I just can't get used to the regular version anymore, the version optimized for the bigger screen it's just better.

Unless you work with photos, video and use the iPad camera a lot I would go for the 12.9 version.

  • Don't forget Auria Pro is optimised for the 12.9 version!

Please excuse my Language, but why does Apple release Ipads with such Shit specifications, and then they dont even tell you what the specs are on their website, so you have to go hunting on other sites to check it out. Bloody bunch of crooks. Its easy for the to release good powerful ipads but they just after your fuckin Dollars.

  • Did you buy the smaller iPad? Why so angry?

  • I havent Bought any of the Pro Ipads as yet. But its true. I am making a point. they are a bunch of Crooks. they can easily develop a good quality Ipad, with 16 GB RAM and fast CPU's. but they dont becasue of the simple fact that they want to take your money and give you shit that is already obselete when you buy it. Just stating the facts here.

If they were actually interested in building a good product and doing the right thing they can.

  • To be clearly honest, if these beautiful apps we use were developed for Microsoft i would'nt be thinking about the Ipad at all.

    what do you reckon ?

  • Well, iPads (and iPhones for that matter) usually outperform Android and Windows devices with more RAM and more CPU cores, so I beg to differ about the quality of Apple's choices for its iOS line. To each his own!

    All the best!

thanks for the input and fair enough. They may have outperformed them in the past due to the simple fact that Apple Operating systems is more rubust.

But they could easily release an Ipad with more RAM and CPU clock speed is what i am saying.

That's true. Speed tests only tell part of the story. The iPad is faster because both the CPU and OS are designed by Apple. Also Android is weak because it has to work on hundreds of different CPUs. iOS is maximized to run on a few processors.

  • I think they are not boosting specs because they take in account weight, size factor and most of all battery life. Higher specs means higher consumption and, while technologies made huge leaps towards with performance(CPUs, RAMs, strorages), the same didn't happened with battery life. While my not-smart-at-all-phone keeps running for longer than a week without charge any smartphone user is grudges to always have a powerbank or a wall plug at disposal.

    Sounds like your spot on.

However how about the Microsoft Surface 4 Tablets. they are more powerful than Ipads, but how is their Battery life as compared to the Ipad Pro ?

The CPU is desnged by Apple ? the actual Hardware ? I though Mac's use Intel processors. ?

Its laughable at best. don't expect to be using ableton for more than 2.5-3 hrs. and to answer your question there is no intel processor on ios devices. its only macs that have them.

Yes sorry your correct. So IOS has their own Processors fair enough. .

  • So which Ipad do you recommend for Music production - the Ipad 9.7 or the larger one ?

  • Larger. The 9.7 screen seems sooooo small. Nonetheless all the onscreen KB make much more sense

  • To be honest it depends on the user. I'm pretty happy with my 9.7 air2. And I grabbed it after the pros launched. I mostly use it as a music sketchbook while the bulk of my work is on my desktop. Owning an iconnectaudio4+ means that I use both in my production.

Yeah, I also grabbed an Air2 (128Go before they stopped production) just after they announced the 9.7 iPad Pro... 9.7 is the good form factor for me as I want to carry it easily everywhere, but the "shitty" specs and (the huge) disappointment about the 2Gb of RAM made me go directly to the store to buy the older version for a very good price...
And I do not feel limited when making music on it ;-)

    :-.)
    me too,
the lag of the 2GB RAM was THE choice to doesnt buy the new on!
its just businness strategy, they could build actuall ipads with more RAM, and just pay little $ more for a 4GB or 8GB or even 16GB would cost modest more in the massproductions and will not strain much more energy, you could shut down the RAM banks which not used.....so....i choose to
wait, cause i could do 98% with my "old" AIR2

  • Pretty much my exact thought lol. You hit the ram limit way before you hit the CPU limit on the air2. Making the 9.7 pro pretty much worthless. Sure. The pencil is useful when working on auria etc but my main daw work is on the desktop so it wasnt worth paying almost double here.

  • I use iPad Pro as a multipurpose tool beyond as a portable studio so for this reason I went with the 9.7 256gb. (Traded in iPad Air 2 / 128). The display quality alone has been worth it for me.

It's understandable if you use it for things other than production. But for pure portable studio work the display quality upgrade wasn't worth it for me. then again I'm colour-blind and can only see 25% of the colour shades normal humans do so it might be specific to me.

  • I own both Pro's. I bought the 9.7" 128Gb after the larger one, cuz this has only 32 Gb (my bad choice). Each one has different pros and cons. 12" allows the easy use of keyboards, etc, but, in my experience, it does not outperform the smaller one when used in a normal (i.e. not extreme) way. My normal way is, e.g., several (up to 8) tracks in AUM, driving different instruments and EFXs. I deem that if you use, say, 24 tracks in Auria some difference could come out.
As a personal feeling, I prefer working with the 9.7", more comfortable to hold, allowing smaller gestures (less real estate to cover), and, if you use the accelerometer, as in Arpeggionome, definitely better.
Actually, I keep the 12" connected to the MAC, and never bring it around, for any other task, I use the 9.7"
