Thor?
Thor has given me so much grief with synch problems I don't know why I still bother but. ..
I had a nice sequence going in Thor, and tried recording it through Audiobus into Auria. Once I had everything up and running, Thor began glitching on playback. I thought maybe it didn't like Auria's midi clock, so disabled it, Same problem. I I closed all apps and restarted my iPad, opened Thor, Audiobus Auria only..Same problem!
If I go back to Thor alone, the sequence is fine. But even with Auria closed, just opening Audiobus is enough to cause Thor to glitch!!!#%€<!,,
Am I wasting my time? is Thor hopelessly buggy? Or does anyone out there use it successfully with Audiobus?
Comments
glitching is more likely an indicator of CPU power exhausted...
I don't have that synth myself, but some can produce tremendous loads
(even more with increasing polyphony... so what's your iPad ?)
cheers, Tom
It runs fine on my iPad Air iOS 9.1. Could you name some presets that produce glitching?
Also, we need more details: what are your Audiobus settings? What iOS device are you using?
And if you had Thor going before opening Audiobus and Auria... Then likely there will be issues with the apps getting their management of audio muddled up.
(Sorry if I'm stating the obvious , just covering the basics for a fairly new forum member. Welcome!)
Is Audiobus even necessary in this scenario? Why not just open Thor as an input on an Auria audio track?
I rarely have any problems running Thor on my old ipad4... but I doubt I could use it with Auria and AB at the same time.
Hmtx: I'm on a 3rd Gen iPad, and yes, I powered off and started over from Audiobus. Audiobus latency 256. All apps closed except Thor and Audiobus at one point. For comparison, apps like Gadget, Alchemy, iSEM are recording through Audiobus into Auria no problem. Admittedly it is an 8-voice polyphonic sound on Thor ;-)
Sleepless:
"Is Audiobus even necessary in this scenario? Why not just open Thor as an input on an Auria audio track?"
That's what I ended up doing. Just used to the Audiobus workflow, tend to always go to that first!
Still, wound up with a 118 bpm sequence coming in at 116.75... That was on Thor's internal clock. Any attempts to synch it with any other clock -- Auria, Midibus, Midi Machine -- resulted in noticable glitching to the delays. The equence would hold synch to clock nicely, but it made the delay glitch, little up-down pitch mod (like when you change the tempo on a delay while it's playing,) Running through Audiobus was also causing Thor to increase in volume and change in tone, like some parameters had been changed. And this was doing nothing except opening it in Audiobus! That synth just drives me nuts....
The plus side of course is that Thor is capable of some really nice sounds, that's why I keep trying to use it.
My guess, ipad 3th gen is the problem unfortunately.
I wanted to love Thor- but it just doesn't sound great- and it is not fun to work with-
Korakios : try IDM Keys 1, I had built a new patch starting from that one, I'd also be interested to hear if you can successfully synch Thor to MIDI clock from another app. It works fine on its own, but trying to record or synch it has been a nightmare.
And thanks for all the replies.
I think you'll find you're not alone being frustrated by midi clock, always a challenge.
What version of iOS?
Turn off the delay and use one in auria after recording, I never record synth effects personally , they are rarely as good as say AUFX effects!
Hmm, which bank is the IDM Keys 1? I tested some sequences and they sync fine as long Thor is started by the master app and gets midi clock. On the "seq" patches Thor uses it's own tempo when you stop the external master app (I used Bm2) .
On "play" patches Thor syncs fine and start/stops in sync with BM2 as long as I start BM2 from the beginning. If I stop and continue (not starting from the beginning) Thor still syncs to tempo but there is a steady offset .
I also tested with Sector and with same results.
All within AB. I just read you have the iPad 3. Even on my Air, when starting stressing it, first thing I notice is that apps get out of sync and then audio glitches come. This is where Link is useful.
i love thor, but i have had problems with drift on my air 2.
regarding the sound.... it depends on the patch, really. sometimes i use it and think "i love this interface! they really thought it through!" and then, i'm like "WTF?"
also, understanding all the different types of synthesis possible helps a lot.
i really encourage folks to spend even 8 hours watching the best tutorial vids on youtube on subtractive, fm, pm, wavetable synthesis, and, you'll get a lot more out of it.
Thor is a good synth. The problem is that it is around since a lot of time, so the concept, as well as the interface, is a bit dated. Anyway, It allows subtractive, a simpler type of wavetable, and has decent oscillators, so one can make a lot, allowed one knows how to. Nave, Sunrizer (old it too, but more innovative at birth) and, why not, even Z3TA+ are easier to manage and have more modern patches, but there is really very little you cannot do with Thor that these ones do. As for MIDI, yep, it is its sore spot

Jvbd: yes, I thought of that actually tried it but the in app delay seem to be sending better, which is why I wanted to keep it .
Korakios: yes, it was using the internal seq. in Thor. Link: unfortunately I am not an Ableton user.
Hmmm... The GUI in Propellerhead Thor dated?
I can agree with you on that!
I think it still is very up to date in form of touch friendlyness and smart in the expand/shrink behavior...
What we need is an IAA controlpanel...
@ErkaPett i, I meant that the look is a bit retro, and this may be unpleasant for some people. The interface is well functional I agree. The kb is one of the best and that solution of visualizing the knobs values as pop ups is brilliant. I agree also with the consideration about an IAA panel
After being revealed as the firstborn child of Odin, she effortlessly liteblue destroys Thor's hammer Mjolnir and singlehandedly takes over Asgard by wiping out its standing army.
