Should I jump into Korg sale?
Hi,
I already own few apps for music production:
Igrand piano
Ielectric
Sampletank
Galileo ( organ)
Impc pro
Ifretless Bass/brass/sax
Launchpad
Sunrizer
Animoog
Bs-16i
Genome
Now would come the question , would it make sense for me to go for this sales on Korg Module and Korg Gadget? I'm not too much into electronic music ( more into rock thing) but still interested into exploring new ways of music creation and being now on sale looks like the right time.
On the other hand, I believe the Ivory expansion on Korg Module should bring even better piano sounds but anyone knows the price of the expansion now that they are on sale?
So let me know if I am an app junkie or should I really dont miss this opportunity.
Thanks!

Gadget excels at the dance musicky side of thing, not so much for electronic rock orientation (at least for my tastes, needs, etc.)
Only you can say for sure, but I am also more into rock than electronic and would view Gadget and Module (and iM1 too) as pretty much essential purchases. The quality of the sounds are top notch and the composing environment is very productive.
It's very subjective, but to give you my opinion : if I had to chose to keep a single music app on my iPad, it would be Korg Gadget by far... And if I had to choose 3... It would be Korg Gadget, Module and iM1 lol... That's how good it is for me !
PS : let's hope that Korg adds audiotracks to Gadget... It would make this app the best portable DAW IMO...
I mostly play rock and metal, occasionally some techno stuff. I've got more synths than I know what to do with, but once I got gadget about 6 months or so ago, I wondered how I had gone so long not having it. Not because I have made and recorded all this awesome music with it, because I still haven't taken the time to learn how to use it completely. But, it's got a lot of fun gadgets packed into it. A lot of fun to mess around with. Sounds are top top notch.
If you need to ask, then you don't need it.
I need to ask if this silly answer was needed ! ^^
For me Gadget (with IAPs + iM1 & Module) & Cubasis (+IAPs) are essential apps to have on my iPad as they cover almost everything I need for noise making...
(I need to start cleaning my iPad 5GBs free space on the 64GB Air 2).
... So imagine if you could have audiotracks and loops in Gadget... No need for Cubasis anymore ;-)
Still would need Midi and AU Gadgets in Gadget and a sampler that is at least as good as Cubasis Mini-Sampler
I think I am a junkie. Bought both... But wtf, it's friday and I will not go out to spend 40 bucks in drinks ( some advantage of being recently father)...
I tend to think that Apps are far more 'healthy' than a bag of snacks or toxic beverages and last longer without bad aftershocks
@Samu I wish I had 64gb to play with. Its tough having to delete and reinstall apps all the time on my little 16gb iPad. I am trying to narrow down the apps and focus on writing. Looking for an all around sound module with different midi channels to feed loopy.
I think Tabletop might work, never bought it but glad it was free for now.
maybe they don't want to destroy the competition...because Audio tracks and timeline mode in Gadget would be formidable!
Well. There goes my app allowance for the rest of the month DX. Grabbed module, Madrid, abudhabi and Gladstone. Totally happy though
You've got a month's worth of busy right there.....
Now that gadget has 5 effects per track and a frikkin sidechain is one of them I'm actually looking at months of playing with it lol. That ableton export is fantastic. Can do most of the stuff in gadget now and then do finishing touches in ableton. I am a happy camper.
All that's left is multiple audio outs to make it perfect.
Go forth and multiply my son
Gadget is a nice environment to put together ideas for many kinds of music. Only you can answer if it’s right for you. There are many vids on YouTube. Watch, listen, and decide if you like.
All of Gadget’s creating events and triggering sounds is centered on the piano roll, and compositions are blocks of bars made up of scenes. Audio tracks and a timeline would require Korg to break from that paradigm, and maybe that’s not what they want to do.
@lovadamusic I agree that adding a timeline type editor could require a rewrite to the flow of the app.
I would say they could expand on the sampler or add an additional audio track module. Something where you could specify the amount of blocks the audiofile would expand.
the other issue would be the pitch/speed if you change the tempo after recording
@AlexB I've never created a whole song on Gadget--I use Auria Pro and Cubasis. But it is one of my favorite and most essential apps.
I mainly use it as a sound module that is run by other devices or apps, like AUM or a DAW. I can either:
Make a big thick layer combining various gadgets.
Or put in a bunch of the same gadget with different patches on each one. For example, to get a unique organ sound.
Of course you can do the same thing combining a bunch of separate apps, but this is much easier to do within Gadget. If you play on your keyboard within Gadget, you only get one gadget to sound at a time.
Second, as you can set up different MIDI channels for each gadget, it's really fun for sending out MIDI from any app that can output on many channels, like Fugue Machine or Navichord. Maybe Genome does this. Again, you can do this with multiple apps, but it is so simple to change gadgets and patches and experiment.
Finally, Gadget is great for making loops to be used in other apps, and in particular in Ableton.
Couldn't that be solved with realtime time-stretching?
Loopy HD or Blocs Wave or even Launchpad seem to handle tempo-changes just fine.
I mean, it should be possible to lock an audio-clip to the project tempo and when the tempo changes the audio-clips will be auto-stretched. It will eat CPU yes but it only needs to be done when the tempo changes.
Interesting that Darwin hasn't gone on sale, is it that good? My choice is it, or to complete the collection of presets in Animoog. I like the UI of Gadget, but Animoog is one of the synths that actually still sounds good on proper monitors imo.
There are so many 'classic' sounds on the M1 it's crazy!
The 'Symphonic' pad is one of those...
@AlexB - Don't let the Gadgets pretty blue EDM overtones fool you. I am also into hard rock, and the following tracks were made using Gadget. Not intended as self-promotion - just an example of how you can use Gadget to create rock and roll:
In my case, I composed tracks in Gadget and then exported them via Audiocopy/Paste into Auria, where I added electric guitar and bass. These are just rough mixes without vocals, but I hope this helps!
Universal - instabought!
Almost forgot to check, but iM1, still not universal, I'll wait...
Yeah and the ability to tweak them within iM1 and save to library for use in Darwin ... not saying it's essential but it is for me, and a heck of a lot of fun.
There is nothing silly about my answer. The OP posted a list of apps he owns and he told us his general goals. My take is that he knows what he is doing and that if he can't clearly see the need or value of the apps (based on his own needs) then he doesn't need them. This wasn't a question like "Do I need a compressor?" or "Would an EQ app be useful?" coming from a noobie. If the OP is indeed concerned about being an app junkie then my answer stands.
I was listening to some youtube demos thinking that sounds quite pleasant, balearic and vibey, then I saw this video and... sold! Flipping through extensive presets it seems to have much potential in other directions too. Cheers
Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Here the key is "knowing what I am doing" part. Of course I have seen some of the sample sounds in youtube, went through user reviews and so on but from my experience even if you take your decent time the user experience when you finally have the app might differ from your expectations ( sometimes better sometimes worse).
In case they would include a fully featured app with all the sounds that you could use let's say for 30 days you could take it, feel the experience of the app and after the period just decide to buy the licence or not. Even not only that, some others might experience it from a different angle and once you take your time you end up loving that piece of software. This is like a book. Sometimes you start one and after few chapters you drop it. Then comes somebody else and tells you that book was really a must that really improves the chapter after you dropped it. That's why sharing other people's experience like in this forum is so much liked by all of us. We learn from the others and they might learn from us.
