iMaschine2 Users: Can I overdub vocal harmonies? If not, alternatives?
I swear I saw Jamie Liddell do it in a promo video, but I don't think it's possible. Any tips?
If not, what's a good alternative with a similar workflow and sound quality for vocal-based soul music?

In the mixer view, tap and hold on a track name (A, B, C, D) and you get a pop up where you can choose: Pads, Keys, or Recorder (which uses the microphone--that's the one you need).
This is probably the video you were thinking of:
An alternative app you might want to check out for live vocal looping is VoiceJam Studio:

(beatboxing used for drums in example video).
Very helpful, thank you.
Right (and thanks!), But I'm wondering if you can record multiple takes on the vocal track like you can on the pad and key tracks. I can't seem to figure it out
OK, if you look more closely this "Director's Cut" version of the video,
https://m.youtube.com/watch?annotation_id=annotation_802057&feature=iv&src_vid=lhSNwChdaWM&v=0h2-1zD2pJA
you can see that what he is doing is using a pad track and sampling into the consecutive pad slots. You click on the sample icon on the left and hit a pad you want to sample into and then you see a record button for that pad. But you can only do really short samples, not full tracks like you can with a full vocal track. You can do up to 16 parts in a kit, but just short stabs.
VoiceJam Studio or something like Loopy might be a better option, if you are trying to do a Bernhoft.
Thank you!
These videos make it look like he just created this track spontaneously one day, in bed, while his girlfriend reads about Gandhi. But I would imagine it took quite a lot practice and rehearsal to film this and make it all seem this slick and easy.
Try and do what you see in the video. I have, and I found it a far cry from the ideal moment of zen the commercial would have us believe. I have studied it closely and I still can't figure certain things. Like how does he have a blank kit with nothing loaded in the pads? And he seems to be able to record a phrase that is longer than I am able. He records a phase "more little more". I can sample that long. And then you see him singing the "little bit" part along in real time. But then in the third pass (high part) he is able to get the whole phrase "more little more, little-bit more little more" recorded. I am unable to record a sample that long. How does he do it?
I am actually working on a project right now and trying to use iMaschine 2 in it, but I will probably end up doing what I have done it the past -- create simple patterns and then export them as soon as possible and finish in full Maschine and my DAW. I would like to understand more about iMaschine, but there does not seem to be many tutorial videos out there demonstrating more advanced features. And the only manual appears to be the built in help menu.
I am going to try to invest some more time googling and seeing if I can find more tutorials out there about iMaschine. However, as often happens for me and iOS apps, you want to get on with the creative flow of your project and not get mired down some "learning" tunnel. I really need to spend more time learning this app -- and Gadget (which is not as limited in certain ways, but I still haven't spent nearly enough time figuring out certain things).
Out of curiosity, and due to the current sale, can you record vocals in gadget?
No proper audio tracks, though many have requested it. The workaround is to import vocal phases into the Bilbao or Abu Dhabi gadgets (which are IAPs). I think Bilbao (which is an MPC-style gadget) allows longer phrases than iMaschine. Jakob Haq shows how it's done here:
I can't decide/figure out if every time I see this issue I might be adding a drop towards melting the stone by begging for more audio options or if the material Korg's made of is simply impervious...I heard tell that Persian rug makers would leave one thread unfinished in their greatest works, to symbolize that only Allah was perfect. I wonder if the Gadget designers are somewhere near the same mat with their thinking....
I think it is just that Gadget is trying to stick to the 'gadgety" metaphor -- beatboxes, 303s, etc. In that sense, iMaschine is unusual for a beatbox in allowing you to record audio tracks. If they only allowed you more that just 4 tracks! Or even the ability to bounce tracks!
On the other hand, the Japanese also have an aesthetic appreciation for imperfection, called "wabi-sabi". So maybe Korg, being a Japanese company, are trying to put a little wabi-sabi in Abu Dhabi. (Sorry, couldn't resist.. When was I ever going to get a chance to use that phase again!)
plus 1
As for wabi-sabi, I am very fond of it, but regret explaining the concept to my son when he was about eight or nine; it's been his explanation for anything half-arsed ever since...
