For those working with Cubasis, Gadget does not appear in Cubasis IAA instrument list, so: add an audio and midi track to your project, select "Inter-App Audio" and Gadget in the routing menu for your audio track, select Gadget for your midi out routing on your midi track

This workaround courtesy of @sirdavidabraham works for almost all IAA sources (that have core-midi in) that are not listed in Cubby's IAA list...sometimes you have to select "virtual midi" rather than the instruments name in the "to" list.

Auria Pro is similar. You have to add Gadget in an FX slot. In my quick test, though, it didn't respond to transport controls that way, which is inconvenient. Loading it outside in AudioBus worked really smoothly.

    I just love AudioBus. B)

Q5 - Is it possible to erase notes from just 1 bar of a 4 bar section using the 'clear notes' function or do the notes have to be 'selected' first.

The notes have to be selected first.

Q6 - I'm sure Gadget finally got an undo function. Where is that hiding?

Footer of the Edit page. It only shows up after you edit some notes (in other words when there is something to undo). Long press it to bring up an undo history. B)

Hey Wim, thanks! I didn't see your reply before editing, good to know about the long press.

Cool video from Mr Haq regarding the above.

    Q1:

Recording midi into Gadget is great fun but needs some setting up.

One tip is to create lots and lots of 16 bar scenes, and run Gadget through them all while recording external midi in. This allows you to record way more than 16 bars. You can then choose the best bits from your performance.

My favourite apps for recording midi in include:

    • StepPolyArp (link)
    • Thumbjam (link)
    • sound prism (link?)
    • Guitarism
    • Animoog keyboard
    • Magellen touch pads
    • ModStep (link)
    • TC Data
    • Poly
    • DrumJam (link)
    • Fingertip midi
    • Infinite Looper

There's not much to it. For the ones that are time based set both Gadget and the other app running in sync, then hit record in Gadget and start playing the midi in.

It's up to you if you turn quantise on or not in Gadget.

If the midi notes of your performance aren't quite in sync then you can always correct that by moving them in the piano roll of Gadget later.

Have you tried recording Fugue Machine in Gadget? It is my favorite next to Thumbjam.

I have. Before it went multi channel. I need to come back to it actually. So thanks.

  • I am sure this question (a pretty basic one at that!) must have been answered before but I can't seem to find an answer.
I want to replace the notes in the first part of a bar with a copy of the notes in the last part of the bar.
I selected the notes currently in the first part and deleted them.
I selected the notes I want to copy in the second part of the bar and select Copy.
How do I paste the copied notes to a specific position in the first part?
Also how can I move the play head to a particular beat?

select the notes you want to copy, tap COPY, and then drag them over to the first bar
there is no way I know of to move the play head

  • Thanks @nick much appreciated!

  • For 'copy&move operations' across multiple bars I usually pinch-zoom out so I can see all (up to 8) bars at once.
This makes these operations a bit easier.

Q? -- did we loose the ability to double tap in the piano roll to advance the play-head? It doesn't work for me anymore. Maybe I missed something but it was there before the update.

Gadget still starts play from the bar double-tapped in the time-line for me. iOS 9.3.1.

Thanks for the response. I also had another problem with song BPM, so I saved all of my files to the cloud, deleted Gadget and reinstalled. All functions restored, songs are good...It all seems normal now,...Phew!

    Hi,

IAA allows to route audio, MIDI and effects between Cubasis (host) and compatible node apps in realtime. There are three basic types of nodes:

    • Effects can be set as insert or send effects
    • Instruments are assigned to a MIDI track and automatically receive MIDI from Cubasis
    • Generators are inputs for audio tracks

It depends on the app manufacturer what type of nodes are available.

IAA apps that are not listed as instruments (only for audio track inputs) are in fact IAA generators (= only for audio tracks) and not IAA instruments, i.e. they cannot receive MIDI via IAA (only via CoreMIDI).

The topic has been discussed in our forum a few days ago (including step by step workflow suggestions for instrument apps that are available as generators only):

    Hope that helps,

It seems to me that you could make this process even 'easierer' (lol) by touching the label of bar 1 and 8 at the same time to zoom out on the 8 bars (instead of pinch-zooming out)...

  • Did the collective We ever figure out a way to loop, say, two bars of a sixteen bar piece so that when you're working on a little something you don't have to wait to listen to the whole bit over and over?

I think you have to get in an double tap the yellow bit at the top of the piano roll on the bar you want to start on. Or something. But it's a bit fiddly.

Perhaps finally a use for the brilliant white Apple pencil that's been sitting unused on my desk taunting me...

  • Don't let the lack of a dedicated audio track hold you back. Check out my trance mix of So Young and So Angry done entirely in Gadget using a single instance of Bilbao for the vocal track.

Thanks. I forgot to mention this was done before the last update so I had to fake side chaining the kick with some automation. I'm glad I won't have to do that anymore!

  • I think I already know the answer, but in case I've missed something, is there a way to play different track parts across multiple scenes together clip launcher style? Or are we forced into tedious copying and pasting for trying different arrangements? I feel like this should be a feature.

  • Great tip!

As far as I know, the answer is no...

What would be the icing on the cake would be to have a 'clip-launcher' as you mention and a 'time-line' in Gadget so when performing with the clips in Gadget could record them to the time-line. Just like in the app to which Gadget can export it's projects :)

We never know what direction Gadget will take in the future though...

  • Yeah that would work. I'd be happy also to just hit a button that automatically creates a new scene containing the currently selected/playing parts.

  • And while we're at it, anyone notice the conspicuously empty space at the far right of the transport controls bar? Hoping for "add new scene" and "add new track" buttons at some point.

Actually it's easy. Tap and hold on the first measure and then tap on the next measure. I did it with two fat fingers. No pencil needed. It's great for drawing/painting though.

  • I don't think you actually tap the yellow line or bar number, that yellow line is so thin that would be ridiculous. I just double tap on the blue space containing the beat numbers

Hmmm. I see that by tapping on the blue bar and then selecting another (so they are both then yellow) you can vizualize a 'spread' of the bars you want to see (two, three, four etc), but it doesn't seem to loop JUST those bars but instead continues on through the others as well.

No doubt I am missing something. BUT you were right about these fat fingers :)
