Arturia iSpark? Yay or nay?

Was wondering about iSpark, in particular the quality of samples and effects, though I could also use the song mode and ability to layer samples. In fact the latter almost has me buying it anyways, but if the samples and effects are good then all the better.

Comments

  • I bought it when it came out. The modular synth part got me in but that hasnt been released. Have never used the app again since release.

  • IMO The samples' quality is high, but the sweet part are the controls. Insanely huge amount of tweaking allowed. EFXs are more than decent and responsive, ofc there are dedicated apps (the AUFX: e.g.) that I find superior, but this is what generally happens with synths.
On the downside, I find the Save implementation difficult to sort out.

  • Tons of fun and sounds great!

  • I deleted it a day after it came out after trying to layer with my own imported samples. It was very glitchy and would still play a default non-imported sample half of the time when pressing the pads. Dunno if that got fixed yet, but that's the reason I bought it

  • Considering how gushy we can get about apps around here, particularly drum apps, I reckon the low number of responses says a lot.

From my perspective, it's a solid app but if you already own a decent collection of beat boxes, there's not all that much new on offer. Not that there aren't good sounds and some clever features. Definitely worth the asking price and then some but that's rarely the question for me these days, spoiled as we are with app prices. It's more like "Does the app offer enough to my music making to make the distraction worth it?"

I was busy earlier and could only give a "yay." Not sure why there isn't more gushing, but here is mine:

For me this is the ultimate drum app. It has the best drum sampler on iOS with tons of control over params as well as the best drum synth on iOS. The modular is there, just not fully exposed for editing. On the desktop version, Spark 2, any drums that use the modular can have certain parameters assigned to macro knobs, and those knobs show up in iSpark. You can load up an existing drum synth instrument and pretty fully tweak it.

The effects are great. Two effects slots PER drum, plus two global send effects, plus two effects slots on Master. You can go crazy with effects. Only complaint here is that the reverb isn't great. It would be great if there was ever a way to add IAA/AB/AU effects in these slots.

I almost never use the built in sequencers in my iOS apps, preferring to do all my sequencing in the DAW or Modstep, but iSpark's LINK-synced sequencer has drawn me in. I do all my drum sequencing in it. Great for live-looping. In fact I like it so much that I bought the SparkLE controller and have it sitting right next to my electronic drum kit, and it has a great fully hardware workflow, don't have to touch the iPad.

The latest update to Spark 2 desktop software, just released, now fully supports iSpark import/export. I had problems with kits that I had previously dumped into my iPad from the desktop version (missing samples, etc) that I no longer have with kits properly imported using this feature.

My SOTMC track from last month was all iSpark LinnDrum samples tracked playing live on my DrumKAT into iSpark's sequencer.

  • I like the song mode in iSpark over that in most other drum apps. There are some kinks, but overall I find it intuitive and easy to use.

Somehow missed this one. Like it, are you sure that Terry Hall isn't singing on this?

  • Great write up, great sounds @gburks.

  • Thanks for all the replies.

Red flag! Anyone else experiencing this? This was one of the features I was hoping to use.

It has a drum synth engine? I thought it was just sample based.

  • Abandonware...sits unused waiting for update as it crashes a lot

  • Till now I've never experienced a crash. Factory samples are among the best one one can find in a iOS app, IMO. By now, it is my main drum machine on iOS

  • Not a single crash here either ever. Nothing but joy. Agree about how easy and useful song mode on this one is also. Then again this is not abandon ware as claimed either in fact It is not even a year old yet :o

  • Went ahead and got it, seems a bit convoluted, but I think I'll definitely get my money's worth...

But, uh... Knobs don't move after being automated?

Okay not that big a deal. Maybe they were just trying to emulate hardware. Still, iElectribe's knobs move when automated. Just sayin'.

Early on I had some issues with wrong samples playing. I don't anymore. I deleted the app and re-downloaded it from the App Store. I think there was either a bug in the file structure of an early version, or an issue with how I dumped in a bunch of kits from the desktop version, or both. A clean install of the latest version, and no more sample mapping issues.

Yes. Now that you have the app you have probably discovered this. In the factory kits check out YMR-10, it's one of the better ones. Save As a new kit and use it as a starting point. I was able to make a pretty close all-synth 808 kit.

Now that I have Spark 2 it really opens up this app. I can build synth based kits from scratch, create whatever controls I want to show up as knobs in iSpark, then export/import to iSpark.

  • Nay for me. Every other time i scrolled especially in pattern mode it would select. And its full of sound effects that sustain and make my ears weep. Drum samples are weak and overall sound quality wasnt up to snuff.

  • This app is close to being really good, but... Export automatically adds a file to the iTunes folder??? How annoying. I also can't get clock send to work with StepPolyArp, though who knows where the fault lies there.

You'd think, or hope, that by now Apple would be able to sort all this stuff out. It is their operating system after all. Come up with a set of standards, make them available to developers. I mean, how hard can it be? I guess Tim Cook is too busy watching the Dow Jones.

Export is for exporting your kit to your desktop for Spark 2. Putting it there is a pretty convenient place for it. Maybe you are looking for a way to export a recording or loop? Don't think it has that feature. Use AUM.
