Sample to SD card - skipping the desktop
I really like the new Moebius app and Korg Gadgets. I'm having fun processing Madrid bass loops in Moebius. I've got the new Korg Electribe Sampler (hardware) that will import audio via SD card. You can play and slice loops with it.
I'm interested in taking my loops from Moebius and putting it on a SD card without leaving the iPad.
Question
1) What's the best way to edit the exported Gadget files so the loops fit to bars? Moebius has a crop feature but there's no way to know if you are cutting to a measure.
2) What is a good card reader for the iPad?
3) How do you get the processed loop from Moebius to the SD card.
Thanks for your help!

I don't think that's covered by IOS...
(at least I only know external memory device in relation to streaming content like iTunes)
Moebius probably works exactly as their other apps and records to a local directory
I use the 'record' feature frequently with Spark and Apefilter, recording on the fly
after some stuff is collected, I switch to file management and choose 'open in AudioShare' for each record
AudioShare's cutter is quite convenient and the loop can be running while trimming precisely
I'll do that for each selected file (using AS temp names)
finally I rename the results, move them to their own folder in AS and trash the intermediate stuff
activate WiFi server and access the directory from the PC
it's not great, but not that bad either - and the AudioShare collection can be used by other apps, too
if someone has a more smart approach it would be highly appreciated...
cheers, Tom
Don't know if 'special hardware' is needed but Sandisk has these iExpand devices and I personally hope they will make a 'iExpand' compatible lightning card-reader in a not too distant future...
That way we could treat our SD-Cards properly since Apple apparently still thinks SD cards are only for camera-usage with pictures and video...
(I'm too lazy to try out all the different apps from flash-drive manufactures in order to see if any of them work directly with the standard Apple SD-Card reader).
it's more a software than a hardware issue - on IOS level
never saw a device that reached beyond camera roll level or similiar
Apple may prohibit it atm, otherwise I wonder why noone ever tried to establish a standard
in other words: what Audiobus provides on an inter-app level as a common external data pool
from a technical viewpoint that's even simpler imho
ps: it's probably because they want everything on iCloud...
cheers, Tom
Auria Pro and Cubasis both support export to USB and wireless card readers. I don't know if that's for projects only or also for mixdowns, but I know with Auria Pro, they use the "Open in" functionality in iOS, so as long as your SD reader has an iOS app (most of the brand name ones seem to) you should be good to go - if you have one of those DAWs.
Also, some file mgm't apps like Goodreader can help you move files back and forth with an external SD reader. So you could send a file from Audioshare to Goodreader and then out ...
DISCLAIMER: This information is based on a lot of research I've done in this area as my iPad gently weeps. I still haven't tried any of it IRL, so bring your salt shaker
I've not found many 'SD-Card Readers' with app support only 'USB-Drives'
Only Leef seems to have a MicroSD card-reader for $49.99...
http://www.leefco.com/iaccess
@Samu I have a Kingston wireless SD card reader that has it's own app ... But I don't have Auria Pro for export and haven't tested the Goodreader export option yet.
Maybe if I get Cubasis during the summer sale ...
@mkell424 : I was thinking, maybe put the card in a usb card reader, plug it into a wireless router with a NAS file serving feature and use one of those remote- file-access apps to download?
I have the same problem with audio files recorded with my Zoom H4N and thought this might be a solution but haven't tested it yet. I hope it works tho.
If you do find a solution please report back!
I can transfer files from ifiles to and from an SD card inserted in my apotop via wifi, like the goodreader solution above it requires the extra step.
Overkill, but...
RAVPower Filehub, 5 in 1 SD Card USB Reader Wireless Hard Drive Companion WiFi Bridge Sharing Media Streamer 3000mAh External Battery Pack, Black
The RAVPower and HooToo travel routers are sooo useful. Basically any storage device that you can attach via USB will work with them. The one above has a built-in SD reader as well. The app that comes with it (or better yet, the FileBrowser) app will let you transfer any type of file.
I don't have the one linked above, I have a HooToo device, but last night I transferred over 8gb of from my iPhone to a USB hard disk to to make room for Korg Module. Worked without a hitch.
a WiFi device may be nice on the go, but it doesn't solve the problem that your app can't store directly on the external media...
which would save the IOS device a lot of memory and make exchange much easier
I save Sparkle's output in a dir of Sparkle, then duplicate it to AudioShare, finally via WiFi to the PC DAW
while AudioShare does a good job in cutting, the PC would be even faster + 2 steps of cleaning up spared
I get along with it quite well, but the process could certainly be improved...
(in particular because I do the same with several apps)
cheers, Tom
Thanks for the replies. I see the term SD reader. Does that include writing to SD? I get the WIFI hub idea and I have Good Reader. I guess I'll just have to try it.
This seems to be a pretty interesting option to get and Kjell & Co here in Sweden seem to carry it too
https://www.hama.com/00124153/hama-movedata-lightning-usb-card-reader-microsd-silver-
the term reader was established ages ago when reading camera data was the only purpose of such devices
as a sidenote:
even earlier there were in fact 'read only' card readers (with a SCSI-port), with write-disabled firmware
Kodak used them in photo print shops, to ensure customer's data couldn't be compromised
when they changed their system to USB those readers sold for 20 bucks or less
today they go from $100 upward - highly demanded for vintage samplers
the firmware can be flashed to re-enable full writing again
cheers, Tom
@Telefunky Thanks for the history. I'm really into reading about old devices and music. YouTube has some great stuff like the original Fairlight demo and BBC specials on Peter Gabriel.
@Samu Thanks for the suggestion but the Electribe only uses regular SD cards.
@wim I've ordered your device on Amazon. If I can mount the SD drive in a file manager app I'll be happy. It also has a lot of other cool features like the backup battery. God bless China - it's only $30!
One question - is it possible to write to a lighting connected device? From what I understand from the iPad will only write to WIFI and cloud services.
You won't regret it. I might have recommended one with a bigger battery capacity, but then you'd need to involve a separate USB SD card reader.
If the included app doesn't do the job like you need, FileBrowser is excellent, and another one of those things that there are a million uses for.
I bout one of these from Fry's yesturday
PhotoFast 128GB USB 3.0 with Lightning Connector/Cable
I was able to open and save files to the usb lightning drive. the only issue i had was the open in feature did not work as well as i wanted. Extra steps were taken its more like a share feature than an open in. The app that came with the photofast is horrible well it you save to the app is still save it on the in app storage witch is still on the ipad. you then in the app have to move it to the external device. it works but its an extra step. As with Auria Pro at the moment you can only move projects not stems or lrya files. But it does work once you find the work around
I didn't watch @Samu video because it said micro cards that don't work on the Electribe Sampler box. The video shows writing photos from the iPad which I understand is part of iOS. I wonder if you can write audio files through lighting?
Yes as i described. the device i used had 32 62 and 128g models
I'm using a micro-sd to sd adapter with my electribe 2 and it works just like a normal sd card. I will most likely go and get the hama adapter later today
Thanks for the tip Samu, I watched the video and I downloaded the app and tried to see "storage" on iPad with it and it seems to see only photos...
Couldn't figure out how to see audio files .....
Do you think it can move audio files like GoodReader in bulk from sd card to Audioshare?
Don't know and it was 'out of stock' at the store here so I could not get it today...
The app is supposed to handle all file-types though.
I'm also a bit worried about the 'flat' design of the hame-adapter as it will most likely 'collide' with all the Air 2 smart-case and leater-case i have in my iPhone 5...
Still hoping that Apple will 'open up' access to SD-Cards as I have the Apple SD-Card reader already.
When my device was jailbroken long time ago I could access all files on the SD-Card using the standard Apple SD-Card reader...
I once aquired iExplorer (USB to PC/Mac) to recover something...
while it can access files to a certain degree, a lot of apps store at a location outside iExplorer's scope
content of SamplR, Sparkle, iMPC are visible, while BeatHawk is hidden (for example)
anyway (as a surprise) transfer is really slow, no advantage compared to a modern wifi router
cheers, Tom
I tried the app alone to see how it works, it identified my iPad and space available and everything, but when I clicked on files it asked for permission to open "camera roll".
I refused and there are no other files visible.
I enabled hidden files but no results on audio files. Could it work in a way that if I load something on the sd card then I can access it?
It is available on Amazon for 51€....
Would be nice if it worked like an additional HD, and for audio files
Samu, do you think it can be connected into aCCK cable?
The request to access camera-roll is standard for all 'file manager' apps at one point or another as it's useable if one needs to transfer pictures to the 'sd-card'. It's not 'dangerous' and can be enabled/disabled in the privacy settings at later point.
The Hama 'move data' app seems to be pretty standard with simple support for 'Open In...' to send files to other apps and other apps can send files to the 'move data' app using 'Open In...' and as such it should work with all supported file-types meaning it should be possible to send (using 'Open In...') say a '.wav' file to any iOS apps that support '.wav'.
Worth to note is that in order to use the data stored on the SD-Card it has to be copied to the 'container' of the app where it is intended to be used. (So for example if you want use *.wav files from the SD card in Cubasis the file has to be copied to Cubasis using 'Open In..' as Cubasis can not / is not allowed by iOS to directly access the SD-Card).
Meaning if you want to use audio-files from the SD-Card with other apps the audio-files need to be copied, they can not be used 'live' from the card... (This is why most of theses 'storage apps' include player features so they can directly access the files).
I personally had higher hopes for iOS10.
Ideally the iOS10 iCloud Drive app should have been given ability to access all files stored on the SD-Card when it's attached to an iOS device using the standard SD-Card->Lightning adapter.
The point being that when attaching a card full of pictures (say a 128GB card) the iCloud drive could have directly uploaded the files to the 'Cloud' without cluttering the iOS device with full-size files...
I've sent feedback to Apple too many times regarding generic file-access on SD-Cards without any success.
iOS10 is still quite far away so there is still hope...
in IOS there's no access to an application's private storage
some apps may store in a semi-public location like 'documents' in the app's directory
but there's no standard and you cannot even rely that an app will use that location at all
when I got BeatHawk, I knew it wouldn't import own samples
but thought: well, then I'll just move the sh*t via iExplorer
surprise, surprise: empty documents folder, oops
cheers, Tom
I just tested the Hama app and it doesn't even show 'wave' files that are sent to it using 'Open In...' from Audioshare so I will not go out and buy it just yet...
As for 'Beathawk' it imports user samples via AudioPaste and iCloud Drive (ie. from AudioShare).
sorry, should have expressed more clearly that I meant the very first release of BeatHawk...
cheers, Tom
Thank you both Samu and Telefunky, I was hoping that I was missing something....
So far the best I found is GoodReader that does folder full of samples which is great...
Audioshare is my library and all turns around it. If anyone knows a better system I'd like to know
Thanks
