Old school MIDI controller?
Anyone have suggestions for an old school MIDI controller with 8 faders and at least 8 knobs with 5-pin MIDI DIN in and out? Please note that I need both MIDI in and out for my setup to work... Thanks.

The old Novation remote SL keyboards should do the trick. i only own the remote zero variant (which is missing the keyboard segment since i got it to supplement my existing keyboard) and it has 2 midi outs 1 in and a thru so the normal variants should have the same.
video here:-
+1 for Novation Remote, hugely programmable midi controllers. I use a Remote 25 regularly
I just happened to see this this morning:

Could do the trick?
I just love the template editor. created a ton of templates for different uses. and its ableton integration is
sublime It works on IOS too so i actually route midi to my volcas and use the remote to control AUM. It does need the new CCK or a powered hub on the older ones. but definitely a top notch controller
The thing to be aware of is if drivers are required. If so it may not work with iPad.
It doesn't need drivers. I'm currently using a remote zero on my Ipad. the main thing is it needs either the new usb3 cck or a powered hub with the old ones. the zero is literally the same controller sans the keyboard. (i have an 88key keyboard i own so i got the remote zero to add controls to my existing keyboard)
i don't think the microkontrol has midi din. same like the newer Novation Launchkey doesn't have them either. the old Novation remote does have midi din hence why i suggested it to him. and it works perfectly on IOS except that it needs more power.
@lukesleepwalker said it needed 5 PIN DIN In and Out, I took this to mean that he wouldn't be using USB, so no CCK or drivers required
Akai MPK series. No sysex but 8 faders 8 knobs and 8 buttons available x3 banks. On top 16 pads that you can use to trigger notes , CC or PC.
Not much software available to set this up but easily doable from the same controller.
The midi in I believe it routes to your PC first so I believe you need to have the PC connected to propperly use it.
I've had mine for years, since it was newly released in 2003, and it is still going strong. I have yet to find a midi device that it cannot be programmed to work with. I do yearn for the SL to get the LCD labels on the knobs though.
Really good one is EDIROL PCR series, I got the 300. Just fantastic.
Midi in/out. Sysex, NRPN, RPN, free messages, etc.
8+1 pots, 8+1 sliders, 2x8+1 buttons. Sends clock, program change, and a knob for midi channels 1-16, very handy...and a L/R slider...Only 15 templates in storage.
And works with iPad
If you were in Europe I got one for sale, I also have the Remote SLMKII....excellent too
are you using a Mk2 ? coz my Mk1 shows labels for the knobs on the left lcd.
Korg MicroKontrol has midi din sockets I believe. See attached image.
I have one. It's quite heavy and requires power. But there's loads you can do with it.
I have this one, the original Remote 25 so its cardboard cut-outs if I want labels LOL
Oh. And here I was thinking My remote zero SL was ancient lol. Doesn't make the controller any less awesome though
How very dare you ! That is a very modern controller compared to what i started with back in 1990 something LOL
I have sold nearly all of my old equipment, there are 2 things I will never get rid of, that remote 25, and a behringer BCF, there is nothing more awe inspiring than seeing those faders move up and down on their own (still waiting for HUI support in cusbasis/ModStep/Gadget so i can actually use it on iOS) .
I should have mentioned that I'd like it to be as mobile as possible. Not against plugging it in if needed but i'd rather work with bus powered and/or battery powered as a stretch goal.
Thx for all suggestions so far!
Remote 25 works on mains or battery (you can use rechargeables and charge using USB)
The SL series Mk I actually even supports 4 C-size batteries to work without USB or mains power.
sadly they removed it in the Mk II
I actually have an entire battery powered studio:-
I'm powering both the novation audiohub and the Remote Zero plus both the k-boards from the battery bank on the right. meanwhile volcas both have their own AA batteries. They recieve midi from the 2 Din slots on the remote zero.
so modstep can sequence both of them at the same time I also have each K-board set to a different channel so they each control a volca on their own.
This is actually a slightly older picture. i have since replaced the CCK with the new usb3 CCk so the ipad gets charged too. although i need to get a bigger battery bank now since the Ipad drains the battery like crazy lol.
will probably get a 25000 Mah battery when i can.
You are correct, sir!
I'm in U.S. so would prefer to shop on this side of the pond.
But there's no room left for your beer !
the beer is on my left armrest
Was so hoping you were going to post a picture of yourself in one of those beer hats.
One that has Bluetooth midi for flow control, connected to IK blueboard
I have used the Axiom controllers with great success, though not yet in an Audiobus environment - I used one to control a MUSE Receptor with B3, Piano, Electric Piano, Strings and several synths for a James Brown tribute band. Worked great, has MIDI and USB. And light for a 61-note controller (also available smaller.)

Do you run this on the latest OSX? I can't seem to find a compatible driver on the Roland site, and was hoping to use it with Logic.
