Ipad air 2 vs ipad pro 9.7
I just pulled the trigger on the pro 9.7 but started having doubts about the Ram which seems to be the same as air 2. I've never had issues with the lack of processing power but rather the ram side would be tight when measured with activity monitor app.
Has anyone here upgraded from air 2 to Pro 9.7? If so, what's your experience? Does it make a any actual difference while running multi app set ups or is it like driving a Ferrari in a 50mph zone?

I upgraded from an Air 1, so my jump would've been more extreme than what you're seeing obviously. My experience has been a complete game changer for me. I was actually ompletely acclimated to the process of breaking a song into parts and recording them separately. With the Air 1 I tried to record a few times with multiple things happening at once. A nod to you actually. Your videos you've posted were a part of the inspiration for that little experiment. To some degree, it was an eye opening experience for me. I did run into a lot of problems. Lots of crashes. Lots of apps needing to be reloaded into AB and then not being able to even after force quitting them. Lots of "this is fun, but I wouldn't ever try this live, nope". And I was content with that. And then I got this pro 9.7. And it's mocking me. My setup for this particular experiment is typically bias fx, Thumb/Drumjam, Loopy, and CPP. These days I'm also usually running most/all of those through AUM with multi channel compression via an app like korvpresser or Push, and reverb with AltiSpace (which is honestly my favorite reverb still, but a monster on the cpu). Allegedly, I've overheard some people say that I've also added in an AutoTune vocal assistant, but they are liars.
I haven't choked it yet. And it's sitting here in my hands right now smirking at me contemptuously.
Happy customer here. Your mileage may vary.
Thanks @boone51
I put my mind at rest and decided to wait for the next gen of pro 9.7 but this came up on eBay for £380 so I jumped on it. I'll give it some to chew on an will report back.
When I moved from air 1 to 2 it was mostly for the peace of mind rather than adding more apps to the chain. I might try to drop in effectrix to see how it behaves but to be honest air 1 was good enough for that with just a couple of dodgy bits in all the time I've tried it.
I think many of the problems are software relayed rather than hardware and having more CPU power will be quicker at tackling software inconsistencies. 2Gb ram is still quite a lot even if quite laughable for 2016.
...and yes, glad to have been of some inspiration
Cheers
An increase over the 2GB of RAM is important to me too. It's more important than a faster CPU.
iPad Pro 9.7 has handled everything > @boone51 said:
I've experienced the same, looks like there's much more to the iPad Pro 9.7 story than the amount of RAM
So I got mr pro in the post today. Other than not finding audiobus after restore everything else, including sunrizer's presets just worked. Unfortunately running the same set up as on air 2 9.3.2 seems to be a bit worse on pro. Lots of tiny clicks make their way into the mix which is far from ideal. Adding effectrix into the preset made it even more glitchy.
I'm going to keep it for a bit and do some more testing but as it stands I doubt I'll be hanging onto it. Let's see what Autumn brings.
Had to replace my iPad air, she just pack it in, i got the air 2 for the time being, going to wait and see if there would be a mini pro.
Bumpity bump.
How are people finding it now? Is there a difference in performnce doing music?
It lloks like the pro may be goung down in price next month so it's a toss up between an Air 2 and a current pro 9.7 for me.
I think now the small pro really isnt worth it because they should be announcing new ipad pros in the near future, also tje price of air2 has gone down so much that only a fool would buy ipad pro now, as you can get better pro for the same price in a while or air2, which isnt much worse than small pro for much much cheaper.
I have a air2 and pro 12. I can really notice the difference so maybe the ram does have an impact. The air2 is perfectly capable but the pro is just very smooth and nice to use. Surprised your not seeing that in the pro9, perhaps a fresh install might help?
You see a difference between air 2 and pro 12 because the latter has 4gb ram. Pro 9.7 has half that.
The pro9 has 2gb ram like the air2 and the pro12 has 4gb ram. The air 2 also has an extra core (3 core cpu) vs dual core cpu. The pro's are running on a higher clock speed and to save extra battery apple decided to downgrade the pro's to dual core. Ram is most important for music apps and thats why you noticed an improvement with 4gb ram.
Do you think he Air 2 will go down further? Or is the current price the final?
I would wait until the new generation comes out.
I still hope they will get 3D touch (but i don't think so for some reasons like the pencil f.e.).
Faster CPU, more space and RAM is always welcome too. I'm just scared about the prices which seems to grow in "no go" land for me (like the new macbooks pro).
You also will getting at least a year longer updates for the pro. Of course that is not always a good thing anyway.
What i don't like is that Apple reduce the price but also just offer a version with less space.
Sure they will attract people to get the latest and greatest.
I think it's getting harder for Apple to sell new iPads if they still cripple iOS and people getting 2-1 hybrid for less money. Now i'm of topic.........
I would still wait until their next event. Shouldn't be too long.
I think they just dropped it a while ago, so dunno if it will drop more when new ipads are released or not. But i bet second hand prices will definitely drop some.
Just wait until next week if you're planning to update the hardware.
