New Peter Gabriel Track

  • I dig it. Thx!

Almost as good as Thotch. ;)

  • Gabriel has always sounded modern. Sadly, like Bowie on his final few records, he's run out of hooks. It's just studio frippery (pun intended) and rapid, directionless vocal attacks. The ability to conjure a juicy, well-considered melody has vanished. Which would be OK if there weren't vocals.

I love those guys a LOT, and they've both changed the face of music for the better, but this new stuff wouldn't get more than a courtesy listen from me. Like Kate Bush.

Disagree. Bowie's final, Blackstar, is stellar.

Yes, it is not all great, but the standout tracks are sad and superb at the same time.

As for Kate Bush, I'm not sure what @icepulse means, precisely. As a l-o-n-g time KB enthusiast, I found 50 Words For Snow to be sub par, but the reworks on Director's Cut were mostly astonishing.

I was also fortunate enough to attended a Before The Dawn gig, and it was hands down the best gig I've ever seen.

  • You couldn't accuse any of these (Gabriel, Bush, Bowie) of playing it safe, they are experimenters, and as such, they can always be a bit hit or miss for some people. I have to say that I'm not loving this latest track, but always interesting to hear, and when they nail it, they are fantastic!

  • It is a very cool listen, not a memorable melody but listen loud, it's a very powerful track. I bought it in amazon. It also made me watch a bunch of youtube videos of PG and Stings tour, I'm sad I couldn't go when they were here a few weeks ago. Their collaborations on each other's songs were very cool to hear.

  • Not a new track, actually. PG wrote this a few years back as an honour to Muhammad Ali and he decided to release it the day the great boxer passed. Not the best track Gabriel has written, but I wouldn't consider this the sign or proof of running out of new and original ideas. True, he's not been as prolific lately as before, but imo his output is still remarkable. And what @skiphunt said: in my book Bowie's 'Blackstar' is nothing short of fantastic.

  • Gabriel's last proper album of original material (Up) was 14 years ago... and it was pretty decent, but nothing to jump up and down about. His last truly exciting album was "Us" in 1992. I loved that record.

Please direct me to any contemporary electronic music that isn't.

    Exactly my point.

  • Not Gabriel's best but still enjoyable. I hope he puts out another album. Like @Icepulse said it's been 14 years....

I absolutely love Up, to each their own I guess. That album still amazes me with details that show up on repeated listens.

I guess I just don't consider it to be as solid, compositionally. It's like, the details impress, but it lacks a certain elegance that comes with inspired melodic structure. It's like the Eno cover of "Mother Of Violence" on the "..And I'll Scratch Yours" album. The original is a masterpiece of melody, and Brian stripped out any semblance of that quality. I appreciate a stylistic departure from an original recording, but that cover is like a fucking sin.

Sometimes the devil really IS in the details, I reckon. "Digging In The Dirt" had all those little intricate ear-worm details, but it was also supremely well crafted as a song. It's all down to taste, I realize.
