SUPER cool. I suppose the price ($260!) will seem more reasonable to those who did not grow up treating tape recorders as disposable tools rather than Vintage Exotica.
@CalCutta Great! ANOTHER "thing" I want...
I'm 35, so yeah, not my first go-round with tape. My interest in it was more from the DJ perspective (I'm more serious as a DJ than anything else). It is expensive though (something that unique can command the price).
Also, I find the current tape trend to be quite pragmatic, as it actually has potential profit. Something rare in current music.
I liked the idea of scratching tape. It's not perfect because you can only go forward witn most tapes (homemade tape loops will go both directions), but it's a very cool drag effect and has a nice lo-fi charm to the sound (that won't be replicated well, if at all, with software).
This particular tape machine is in a nice functional package; however, DIY enthusiasts have been using tape manipulation since the 1960's so it's more of a refinement than an innovation which shouldn't detract at all from people wanting to use it.
By the way anyone who wants to play with a nice tape scrubbing effect/sound should check out FINGERBEAT.
Agreed, I hope this kind of realistic scrub makes it into Samplr
You never know what sort of genius might slip out...
Very good point. Innovative tools don't always lead to genius results and a genius can use the same tools as everyone else but in innovative ways. I would also add that if more people have access to a tool, the more likely it will be for the creator and the tool to click. So just because a tool has been around for a long time does not mean what can be done with it has been exhausted.
Right on the nose.
