Is iPad Pro much better than Air 2 for making music?
Could you pls advise?
Is iPad Pro much better than iPad Air 2 for making music because its specs are better? Or is the difference very small?
My sincere thanks,
Comments
I want to know that too
I mean I know it has more RAM & shit... but does it feel faster? The Air 2 feels pretty fast for my needs honestly
I understood that it had neither.
Lol yeah are we taking about the 9.7 or 12+ or a toilet?
Is it better? Yes. The larger screen makes for a better playing surface, it has 4gb ram and the best processor currently available on an iPad. Is it "much" better? That is more difficult to answer and will depend on your personal preferences and how hard you are pushing it. All I can say is that I am a happy iPad Pro user (the 12.9") and would not go back to a smaller model.
I had the Air 2 and now I have the Pro (12.9")
I agree with @PhilW . Really depends on your workflow but the larger screen makes a huge difference for me. I definitely can run a lot more apps without any issues.
I think as more apps mature, we'll start to see more benefits of having the 4GB ram. Think of it like an investment for the future....thats what I told my bank account lol
My advice:
Cost: does cost play a big part in your choice? If so then the cheaper option is worth looking at, as the Air2 runs an awful lot before it struggles!
Latest tech: If you want it to last as long as possible always get the latest. If wanting the 12+, then maybe wait til it's updated to the 9.7 screen tech.
Power: the 12+ has more ram and a faster possible output speed. To my mind it could be more important to future apps.
Size: the 12+ is great for some apps that take advantage of its larger size. Even normal apps are easier to use for us with fat fingers!
Personally using an Air2 and even if I had the money, I would not update yet. If I had unlimited funds, yes I would get the 9.7 as a second iPad and wait for the 12+ to be updated.
At the current cost of the 12+ I would buy a Mac Pro first to add to my iPad, before considering updating.
If buying from new without another iPad, I would buy the 9.7 Pro.
To add my thoughts are from someone who only uses music apps. Art and other apps may change your point of view.
I LOVE the new Big Boy iPad. I am happy with it. Very. I hug it to my man breasts and whisper in its ear that when the house is burning only it will I return for (promise), but it hasn't made me any more cleverer in the talent department. Not one whit. Shinier in places, more fluid in places, but it's the middle of July and nothing I have kicking about in its massive and luxurious drawers is any bloody good for this month's SOTMC, so yes yes yes Yes. But no.
Man the Ipad Pro blows anything out of the water. You get more option in some of these music apps when you have the 13 inch model. Like in Auria Pro you see more inserts options on screen in the mixer window. As for performance yes you will notice when bouncing tracks out importing and exporting. The screen size makes everything amazing creative fun and the speakers make it a better experience, and yes its faster.
Quite. More RAM would be attractive, but Apple selling shit. I just can't see it getting the numbers.
doesn't 4 gig come in macbooks well 4 gigs comes in the iPad Pro it it does wonders for the IOS platform. I regularly use it to edit 4k video and it renders it quick
Thanks for sharing this. Looking to do something possibly as early as this fall.
Yes for the bigger screen and more RAM, but, the heavier weight (including a good case) is a drawback...
Though, my iPad Air 2 feels so tiny since the big baby 12.9" joined the family...
The sound from the speakers in the big iPad is really amazing & useful too!
I vote 12.9"...
Yup. No. Going. Back.
There is a reason that A4 is the most popular paper size, and the 12.9" is more or less A4 sized. It very quickly just feels natural, and anything less feels too small.
Interesting comments. What I am curious about is, for the iPad Pro users, do you find the physics of the thing a draw back? Are you finding the size at all disconcerting to work with? What I like about my iPad is I can easily pull it out on a crowded subway and work on music while on the go.
For me it's all about price, yes the 12.9 has more ram and it's much better for music but it's twice as much money as the Air 2 which is a excellent device.
I own a Air and a Air 2 and I could see the difference in performance.
If you have the extra cash get the iPad Pro
I love the big insides of the 12 inch iPad Pro, but I hate the big outsides.
When I went to Keith McMillan the other day, I stopped by the Apple Store, just to check and see how I felt about the size of the iPad Pro 12. It's a lot bigger than the iPad Air form factor. I just couldn't see lugging it around. I really wanted to find it acceptable, but it is just too big for me.
I am skeptical that the 9 inch pros in the next generation will have 4 GB. Nonetheless, I'm going to wait until then, and then if necessary bite the bullet on a 2nd gen 12 inch iPad pro
What apps are you running where you cant see the difference. I have seen a difference with every upgraded iPad from the first. The iPad Pro is the one to go with if your doing Music hands down. I took my son on a train ride and it was great. Now thats not a crowded subway lol. The four speakers sound like a shity Bluetooth speaker(which is good for a tablet lol). The screen size has benefite like in Auria Pro check the pic. see how many inserts he has on his screen
now this is Auria Pro on a regular ipad. If im not mistaken, you can see more tracks as well
The iPad pro 12'9'' is great. I'll wait for the second iteration, hopefully with force touch and double the RAM.
When ipad pro 9'7 was released I went blind folded for Air 2. It had a 100€ discount and I could get the 128 Gb. I have the Alesis Io dock that obviouslybdoes not fit in the big Ipad pro. The size of the screen looks cool but portability, low weight are clearly against size.
Portability is definitely not its strength, but I love my 12.9 Pro. For me, the sum of its extra speed, memory, and screen real estate really do elevate it to a different level as a creative tool. It's so cool to be able to switch between many apps seamlessly without constant app reloading. At this point, in almost every way I prefer doing design work (where I can) on it over using Creative Cloud on my desktop: If IAA's acted a bit more like VST's in actual use and didn't suck like they do, the Pro would also rival my desktop as a music platform. (The iPad's ergonomic and 'cool tools' advantages weighed against the desktop's raw power and robust plugins). Crossing all my fingers IAA and AU reliability improves in the future, since I love working on the Pro!
Yeah, me too,
had lots of "old" ipads....
use in the last months mostly AIR2/mini2& a iphone 5s and i could do ALL what i want, and have hundreds of things which wanna be played....so enough is enough, but!
if the second 12" had forcetouch, i think about to get it....and if the new iphone7 lost the headphonejack the next iphone will be a used 6s, thats for SURE!
I bought an Air 2 when the 9.7" pro came out.
This is my first ipad and I was waiting for the 9.7" pro as the 12" seemed good, but I wanted the portability.
When they revealed that the 9.7 would only have 2GB ram, I opted for the Air 2 as the price difference didn't justify the difference in processing power. (I am not interested in the pen or keyboard connector).
The decision to only put 2 GB ram in means that developers will still need to work within that limit for the near future, even for "pro" apps.
If the 9.7 had 4 GB, I would have got it with the anticipation that some apps might start making use of it.
Is that the case? An app can be designed to use whatever available memory space it wants to?
On my 1G ram ipad Air 1 ,I rarely reached the limit. Usually the cpu is overloaded.
Plus there is already a limit ,applying to RAM usage per app, so I don't think >2GB would make much difference for playing live without glitches from CPU.
To me what makes the ipad Pro 9.7inch great is i can film the 13inch with the 10inch
I've had a session like this:
iSpark + iMaschine into AudioShare
BlocsWave through Filtraton into Audioshare (playing the voice loop)
Moog modular synth into Audioshare (playing the off beat stupid lead)
All while AudioShare was recording
So I'd say the iPad Air 2 can handle quite well.
Also... Ableton Link is a dream come true. Last year it would've been a mess to try and sync these.

I've also tried a similar setup but used AUM as a mixer into AudioShare. Which is nicer because you can control the routings better and have filters & shit on each channel.
I'm still amazed what you can do with a tablet these days.
