Speak n Spell Vocal FX Frekvens by Erik sigt- haQ attaQ 162

Speak n Spell Vocal FX Frekvens by Erik Sigt aka Humbletune! In this video I am showing you how to get that Speak n Spell type sound out of Frekvens.

I love this app because it’s a perfect vocal FX processor. It does bit-crushing, frequency shifting and ring-modulation (i think?). On top of that Frekvens has got a delay too, plus it’s very cheap. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for this. Very helpful. Everybody rates this so highly, but I have never been able to figure out how to make anything usable. For me so far, the presets are just, like, 12 ways to make things sound worse. I know that its charm is its idiosyncratic interface but ... Always set the BPM to 15? Well, sure. _Make sure you pull the bubbles down to zero to start. _OBVIOUSLY.

But it definitely helps to see someone who understands its process.
    Thanks, Herr Haq.

Sometimes making something sound "worse" is useful for overcoming mediocre playing. Sometimes taking my guitar tone and wringing its scrawny little neck with Frekvens is what I need to stop boring myself to death with my own playing.

I don't think I've ever known what I'm doing with it as in thinking of a certain effect I'm going for and setting it up to get it. It's more a process of messing with what's there until that "crap that's cool!" moment. Great fun.

I doubt if even Frekvens could mangle my voice to the point I could use it in anything though. :#

Don't know why, but after I read the above quote I got this tune playing in my head :D

  • Not with ipad atm, but I think my version of frekvens looks different from this one. No vertical sliders to the left of the circles and no transport-style icons in top left. Huh?

It looks different when you use it as an IAA and when you use it As an AU. Go check it yourself. In the video it's running standalone.

  • Ah, I see. Only ever used it as an AU so far.

  • At the risk of getting lynched for going off-iOS, does anyone know how to create the speak'n'spell effect in Ableton? I spent a couple of hours messing with the frequency shifter, granular & ping pong delays and the bit crusher (the name of which escapes me right now) and still didn't get anywhere close. ( though I did make some other cool noises )

  • Frek'n awesome!

Thanks for opening my eyes to something new on iOS, this effect sounds great. Once again, @thesoundtestroom sends me scurrying off to the AppStore with haste.

@JiggyWig I don't use Ableton Live, but you could always do it the old fashioned way, and get something very authentic sounding.

Resample your recordings down to between 4bit 8Khz. It'll definitely sound speak and spellish. If it gets to dirty then up the bitrate to 6-8 and the sampler ate between 8-12Khz.

When you're satisfied just resample the recordings back up to whatever bit and sample rate your working with. ;)

Thanks, I can get the lo-fi feel nicely. I can't seem to recreate those lovely LPC'd vowels though.

Mind you, I've just spent a delightful 2 hours wailing into the ring modulator & the vocoder; I haven't had that sort of fun in ages.
