Recording Gang/Riot Vocals....it's a metal thing
How would I go about recording riot/gang vocals for a metal song. Like..............
I don't have band members to help me achieve this. Just lil' ol' me.
Like at about the 1:06 mark here in this Skid Row vid:
Shout from the top of my lungs at a distance to the mic?
Shout from the top of my lungs at a normal recording distance to the mic?
Just sing really loud, don't shout!! Normal distance or at a distance from the mic?
and then..............repeat the above, a few more times to give it the group effect? Maybe use a pitch correction, or something to alter my voice/vocal a bit during each vocal addition?
Any thoughts? Please let me know! Thanks

You've listed what I have done before (except for the shouting). But yeah; sing loud, but use compression...repeat many, many times so you can throw out bad takes and layer the remainder. I apply vocal effects after, so that you can easily change if needed.
No way. The only way to do it is with 18 guys with beautiful hair and carefully ripped jeans all shouting in an elevator shaft in a vacant warehouse. The kids will know if you cheat!
This is true, my reply was in denial of this fact!

Absolutely. Joey Tempest, David Coverdale, Jon Bongiovi and Noddy Holder all swear by the shaft method....and industrial vats of hair gel.
I'm glad I wasn't drinking Coffee!! I'd-a spit it out as I am laughing my ass off right now.
I'm not really sure if anyone besides the SOTMC will listen to it anyway, so...... Those pesky kids won't know a thing
But you will know.
Actually, stand way back and record yourself at different volumes. Alter the speed of the playback so your voice will rise and drop (in pitch) for variety. Do that many times. Leave in the scruffy takes as proof that you let the bass player join along.
K, that is good advice. if....... I can find one unsuspecting friend or neighbor, then I'll add that as well. lol......
To minimize the 'sameness' of the voice, try to record takes at different times of day, i.e. Early in the morning when your voice is relaxed and therefore a bit deeper, then after watching a bit of the GOP convention when your voice will be 'stressed'. Copious amounts of Nitrous Oxide might help too. Couldn't hurt anyway.
