YAMAHA FM Essential Impression – haQ attaQ 164
YAMAHA FM Essential Impression! Seriously FM Essential is free, sounds awesome, looks great (in my opinion) and it packs a fully tweak-able FM synthesizer. However, to be able to access full functionality this app needs to be connected to a YAMAHA MX BK/BU series synthesizer.

I too would pay handsomely to unlock the full features. Makes me wonder if Yamaha would generate more revenue from this app if a few people went and brought the hardware or if a lot of people paid an iap to unlock it? Either way, I'm sure Yamaha know best
As mentioned in the other FM Essentials threads I've sent a support e-mail to Yamaha requisition alternative methods (IAP) for unlocking this app...
The 'current' lime of MX synths doesn't unlock the app(tried in a music store). It needs the new 'Version 2' synth (those are not yet available) and there is as of writing no V2 firmware update for the old MX Line...
That does sound great. It’s just up to Yamaha what they want to do, which depends on what they’re trying to sell. If I had to guess, it’s the hardware.
IIRC, the popular (free) SynthBook app was missing some features (AudioBus?) at the time it was released, and they later made some updates. Maybe they'll do the same with this FM one, which I imagine would be pretty good considering their FM pedigree.
The MX49 V2 could turn out to be a pretty nice companion/controller/audio-interface for the iPad but unfortunately it doesn't pass-thru the AUX input so there is no way to record external sources with it when using it as a class-compliant audio-interface. I'll definitely be checking out the MX49 V2 when it hits the shops here in Sweden...
How were you able to determine that it does need these V2 synths?
Because it didn't work with the regular MX49 when I tried it in a shop...
Sidetone. I was not able to test with a 'proper' midi-interface with the old MX, only using CCK and as the current MX is not class-compliant it might explain why it didn't work...
(Classic mistake of quoting own reply).
Okay...the new devices are slated to be available next month in the US...we'll know soon
In my opinion, needing the new MX series synths to unlock full functionality of FM essential is a cheeky if not clever way for Yamaha to sell the new MX synths. It's like teasing a dog with a bone. I know the app is free but it would be good if there was an IAP to unlock to full version.
That's why some of us have already sent an e-mail to Yamaha support asking for alternate ways to unlock it.
I mean seriously, I'm prepared to pay premium to unlock the app as I don't need another Keyboard...
I don't like those new synths of theirs though. They look like a hurriedly patched up advancement of the reface series, which itself was a quite unimpressive retort to the Korg Volcas, in my opinion. As I say, they’re not heading in a proper “synthesis” direction with their hardware, but nevertheless some of it accidentally leaks out now and then.
A comparison to the ReFace series makes sense as the 'FM Essentials basically' has the 'DSP-Guts' from the ReFace DX with added models for the older hardware and the AN2015 in the Yamaha SynthBook is essentially the ReFace CS without effects...
So Yamaha already has the 'DSP-Code' that they can re-package and monetise on iOS...
Thanks for all the comments everyone! Let's hope that Yamaha adds an unlock IAP sometime In the future.
When Yamaha Synthbook came out it didn't even have Audiobus but they updated that later on, so maybe we'll get lucky with this app too. =D
