In appreciation of Chiang Mai

What a great synth.

I'm getting some lovely crisp rich sounds out of it by firing random midi CCs at it.

Bells, percussive sounds, long pads, fizzy FX.

It sounds nice and different to all the other Gadget synths too.

Someone said its basically 2x 2 operator FM synths. That right?

  • Yes rich basses too!

    That's what it is...
But it's has alternate 'names' when compared to Yamaha.
So the 'harmonics' is practically the modulator frequency and pitch is the carrier frequency.
And the 'Filter Envelope' is tied to the envelope knob under VPM.

Compared to to Yamaha FM that has individual envelopes for carrier and modulator Chiang Mai is pretty 'basic' but manages still to produce quite a broad range of FMish sounds :)

    Thanks.

Basically I'm just finding everything sounds good if you want that fizzy digital sound. Especially with the new iFX reverb, delay and crush.

  • lol what a great thread title
non ios people would be like whaaat? haha

  • I'm appreciating Gadget more and more for every day that goes by!

I have the Electribe 2 which I got because I thought I would make things easier and faster.
Coming from en MPK Mini 2, the pads on the Electribe 2 are a really bad joke...
(I was thinking I would get used to them pads but nah, and the 'chassis' also makes so much noise when hitting the pads it almost feels like a construction malfunction).

Sure the oscillators and edit knob are a quick way to dial up sounds but most of those 'sounds' are already there in Gadget. It's just a matter of finding the right Gadget inside Gadget :D

Just about the only thing the Electribe 2 still has the edge on is the missing 'sampler gadget'.
It's so convenient to dial up a sound (drum or any sound) and be able to apply filters and modulation to it and play it across the keyboard.

Sure, It's possible to load up a sample in Bilbao, set the filter as an effect, draw the automation for both 'filter envelope' and 'pitch' but it's tedious...

And well, I hope Gadget will some day get support for folders or at least be able to import a complete folder or a zip file since that would be really handy if/when the 'Sampler Gadget' arrives. (I mean the compelete 'Factory Sample Set' from The Electribe 2 Sampler is around 18MB and those sounds would cover some that are missing in Gadget).

And back to the topic. Being almost a 2OP FM-Addict Chiang Mai with the added effects is very nice indeed!

  • I also really like it.
I use it in many projects where I don't use any other Gadgets. Wonderfully unique.

Chiang Mai is one of my faves. Even more now with the added IFX.
I like recording subtle automations to add some complexity.

Speaking of automation: do some of you set Gadget to double tempo to get a higher resolution for the recorded automations?

Sometimes when trying to do 'chip-type' arpeggios by modulating the coarse-tuning of a sustained note. But it's a real pain as there is no way to 'copy&paste' automation data.(say copy from one beat to another beat to fill a bar that can then be copied to the next bar).

I also recall someone making a request at he Korg Gadget forums to have something similar to Electibe's 'smooth' setting meaning Gadget would automatically interpolate at highest resolution between the two values.

A line-tool and 'precise editing'(so we can see the value under the drawn parameters) have also been requested.

The FM Essentials has a nice feature that would do well in Gadget...
It has a 16-step 'snap-shot sequencer' for the 'orb' meaning you set the instrument/orb to position you like, make a snapshot and when the snapshot sequencer is running it interpolates all the settings from snap-shot to snap-shot.

It can be done using the automation in Gadget but recording multiple parameters at once is not so easy and since there is no way to copy the automated values between beats&bars in a controlled manner it's tedious.

The double-tempo trick for increased resolution is also used in tracking(Multi-Speed SIDs).

  • My favorite default preset on a synth. Nothing like jamming out on a sine wave with some lush delay when you don't know what sounds you want.

maybe not my favourite - but I often don't venture beyond using the first preset in Chiang - it is very sweet sounding

    Some more classic sine waves

I stumbled upon a random patch yesterday (two sign waves) where it really sounds quite like a human voice singing.

    Pretty cool.

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 - so....(looking at patch name) I need to be high to hear the singing? ;-)

    Exactly.

High up the keyboard. Rather than on crack.

  • I’ve harboured a long-held suspicion that internally, all the gadgets (other than sample based ones) are all actually one synth and each gadget is merely a well designed delimited range of variability projected out to the surface. I actually suspect that this one, Chiang Mai, is the closest to what’s actually going on in the rest of that iceberg.

    Nah I don't think so :)

  • I have a feeling that the Gadgets have way more adjustable parameters than what are shown in the UI. I'd welcome an 'advanced mode' for all the Gadgets :D
