Mac OS Audio into Auria via lightning?

hi

is it possible to stream audio from logic prox on the mac into Auria via the lightning/usb cable?
Could something like studiomux or music io be used to achieve this?

Comments

  • yes , thats the idea of them .
I don't use macos or logic to guarantee ,
but musicio is working fine on windows here , with (little advertised) 4 stereo streams .
they work in addition to soundcard audio , which is great .
research which is better for you , although last I looked musicio had better reviews than buggier studiomux , may have changed now .

  • it's a feature of the iConnectAudio and (some if their) Midi interfaces
the iCA4+ has 2 mic/instrument plus 2 line inputs, 2 output pairs + headphones which you can use simultaneously in both systems
additionally you can define upto 10 (iirc) virtual ports that may be assigned to tracks in the respective DAW or app
the same applies to midi with a bunch of channels (too much to remember...)
there's a midi DIN io and a dedicated USB port for midi that supports several devices if connected to a Hub

    cheers, Tom

I own both, and work way better with studiomux. If you look in this forum, it looks to me that opinions are more oriented towards studiomux (my feeling, not done any systematic research, tho)

  • thanks for the responses. i'm clear on how audio gets from ios to macos with studiomux/music io, but not the other way.
what i'm trying to do is use an old mac to play a virtual instrument (omnisphere) and stream that into Auria Pro for recording on the Ipad (using lightning cable).
Can studiomux and music io definitely support audio transfer back into IOS? (rather than just an effects loop)

  • excellent - thanks

  • Having some issues with this. Got MusicIO and it's working perfectly transferring midi bi-directionally. However, i can only get audio back into the IPad via the effects loops.
Auria is not listed as one of the apps to use in the effects slots.
    Any tips please?

I'm afraid originally I only answered generally .

EDIT / I've deleted my stupidity , it wouldnt have worked .

    see below

  • Otherwise maybe studiomux would be the better choice , I've just looked & it is Audiobus compatible , so use AB input into Auria .

refund musicio & get studiomux ?

  • Slightly off topic, but why stream from Desktop into Auria? Most people seems to want the exact opposite.

  • ok thanks Wally - i'll try Studiomux as AB input.

The reason i'm looking to do it is that I like the constraints Auria places on the recording/mixing process, but also want to use some of the great sounds that are on the Mac (Omnisphere etc).

@pavalottie has raised an interesting issue with this ; the fx loop seems not routable to inputs of recording apps .

I have now tried with MusicIO & realised that the Audio section is for Ipad app audio outs,
but whilst the FX section brings audio into ipad ( which can be monitored thru ipad speakers! ) it doesnt seem possible to bring that audio as INPUT to any recording audio apps; only fx type apps which route it back out again . I even tried taking a feed from the fx app into AB , Auria & Aum but that didnt work .

MusicIO isnt AB compatible I now realise, but even if it was I'm not sure it would work if the audio is directed to the FX section of AB , as AB seems to need an IN > OUT connection to work , & there would be no IN .
As AB now uses IAA , which also has different treatment of FX & inputs , this is similar to AUM ,where I also couldnt get a feed from the FX .
So unless Studiomux has a specific computer OUT to Ipad INPUT , not FX Loop , It may not work either .

I would welcome @SecretBaseDesign input if/how it is possible to record audio from computer to ipad .

(In the meantime @pavalottie could record Omnisphere audio in sync to computer & import file . In terms of hardware , a cheap USB CC interface for ipad e.g Behringer UCA202 could connect to computer interface , or if your current computer audio interface had an ADAT port , you could use minidsp UsbStreamer as Ipad ADAT I/O for 4 stereo tracks .Both these options would be cheaper than Iconnectivity interfaces mentioned above .)

  • Hardware wise this is easily achievable using an iconnectaudio4+. The 2+ should work too however I don't own one so not sure.

do you have that minidsp usbstreamer ?
thanks for mention their devices (some funky stuff on that site...), but I couldn't figure out the Adat mode from the description.
In one case it's only a single pair on TOS-Link, in other sections they call it 8 channel Adat, very obscure...

the iConnectivity interfaces are rather budget, considering the number of analog channels and divided by 2 because they supply 2 systems simultaneously.
On an iCA4+ even a triple system: one of my DAWs (with it's PCI interface) is connected via the 2nd analog pair, and can send/receive to/from the iPad and another DAW... or someone may still have a favorite 19" outboard box... imho a pretty smart setup

If no analog ports are needed, some of the iConnect midi interfaces route audio, too.
But that isn't just hardware, after all the interface functionality is achieved by software.

    cheers, Tom

yes , recently bought . I can confirm initial testing it works perfectly with various ADAT hardware .
It can act as master or slave for ADAT sync , but set from the other external hardware / software not the USbStreamer .
There is firmware which can change it from 8 channel ADAT ( as delivered ) to optical stereo .
I/O can be selected as stereo pairs or mono . Photo shows AUM , also works in Auria.
Audiobus own limitation = multiple inputs but no multiple outputs.

iconnectivity is a welcome addition to market , but for anyone with existing ADAT hardware ( & my hardware studio is based on ADAT ) it makes sense to use that & the USBStreamer answers a cheap(er) need of 8ch ADAT to CC USB .

  • thanks - that's why I asked, still a lot of Adat gear around
and with the MiMix app assignment of individual audiobus channels to hardware io should be possible

    cheers, Tom

  • Hi -- saw a mention from @Wally, and wanted to jump in here.

With musicIO, you can send audio from the desktop to iOS, but it comes in to the effects stage of the iOS app -- there's not an easy way to route things to an input of an IAA app (Auria, or otherwise).

When we were working on the design, we were trying to target the most common use cases, and make those easy. So, fairly straight-forward audio from a synth into a DAW track, or sending the audio from a DAW track through an effects app on iOS (and then the audio back to the DAW track).

Would you consider adding this option in future ?

    If not it might be worth making this limitation clearer in the description ;
even as a reasonably experienced IOS user I hadn't realised how distinct the IAA Input & FX routings were , & had assumed MusicIO FX Loop could somehow be routed to a recording app input .

We could make the audio from each iOS track available as an IAA audio output, so that you could route that into an Auria input. I'll put that on the to-do list, for the next release....

(Still seems like a very strange use case to me, though. If I've got a desktop/laptop, that's where I want to have my DAW. Obviously, I like iOS, and iOS music apps, but the center of my universe is Logic on the Mac!)

StudioMux shows up in AB inputs, did nobody look?
