  • Hmmm. I am always puzzled by what the 'go free' step means as regards further work....for some reason not feeling optimistic.

    Cool, thanks.
FLUX:FX is a mainstay in my performance and have been interested to explore 'FLUX:FX play' for a while, as it seems to be a more casual 'easy access' version of the real deal (although in reality, probably just a version with the same factory presets only). I would never have bought it, now I can have a go!

It needs a serious update. It no longer seems to work as an Effects module via AUM or ModStep... It does weird things when it does work as well...where it seems to be affected by Midi modulations happening in other apps, but it won't allow me to disable Midi input via Settings...like it gets locked to a channel and won't allow itself to get unlocked.

  • The link doesn't work and I can't find play version via search. Anyone know why?

The posted link is for the French App Store? The App Store maybe experiencing technical difficulties. You will need to search for it as an iPhone only app.

  • There're no any problems to use it as an FX within AUM. But you're should note that it was created for iPhone only. It doesn't work on iPad.

  • Works fine for me in AUM and AB on my iPad Air 2

I've had this app for sometime and it works on both iPads and iPhones.

I was speaking about the fluxFX for iPad app...not the iPhone version. Sorry for the confusion...i didn't realize there was an iPhone version. I love the fluxFX app when it doesn't misbehave as it has recently.

  • for me it was a major disappointment (despite the reputation of it's main protagonist)
sound quality is ok for live performance, but just doesn't cut it for recording
since I have the stuff from Holderness, I never looked back

    cheers, Tom

Ah, found it once I realized it was iPhone only. Thanks!

Interesting viewpoint. I've found that FLUX:FX is the only app on iOS that can create usable distortion, octave and other guitarist friendly effects. What specifically did you find that it fell short on?

I also can't host it as an IAA source by the way. I use it as an IAA effects node in AUM. Hoping for the long promised update to come and solve all problems (they make reference to it in the manual!!).

for distortion I get along pretty well with Positive Grid's stuff (amps, pedals)
Reverb, delays and filters in FluxFx are not very pronounced, similiar to Turnado.
Both systems have a lot of funky interaction, but lack audio details

For modulated filters the Apesoft Apefilter does a great job, but it's a bit tricky to setup the proper curve characteristic - it can virtually do ANY response curve, but one usually lacks a blueprint from whatever Wah or Mutron, so it's tweaking by ear.
But it's also fun to create entirely new filters - and Apefilter has an excellent midi implementation for remote control.

To make a distortion sound big, I frequently add a very small room setting from the AD480 reverb at the very end of the chain.
The reverb is a CPU sucker, but imh ears it's the final bit that makes BIAS undistinguishable from a real-world recording. It's an unusual device in the sense that it has a couple of sweetspots that really stand out.

    cheers, Tom

  • Does the full version of Flux allow for MIDI CCs to the x/y pad?

Yes, but only their designated ones.
Here's how to do it with Modstep (could be more widely applicable):

Nor me - they mention a 'new feature update (v1.1) coming soon' on the FLUX:FX (iPad version) page, dated 24th Jan 2015. Still, it's nice to get the phone version free.

  • I'm hoping that they're using the iPhone version to promote the iPad version ahead of an imminent update! I've noticed that their facebook channel is active lately (not long ago they shared a video that I posted, showing cross device MIDI sync) so I'm remaining optimistic.

Thanks for this. Bafflingly hard to use... I'd buy the full version if they made it easier to control with MIDI.

  • Thanks. Already had the full paid version but it's great to have a second instance.

  • edited July 2016

No idea why, but the phone version seems to sound better to my poor old ears.

  • I can't figure out how to save presets. Is it not available in the PLAY version?

    No, only PLAY.

  • Hi all,
Thanks for all your comments. Just to give an update on the 'going free' - we always intended the FLUX:FXplay version to be the audio engine either to get a taster of the full app or to use as a second instance for performance purposes [where the user has prepared all the settings and simply wants to switch between performances and use the XY]. We were hoping it would also expose the app to a wider audience and bring more people towards the ipad big daddy app.
As it happens, a 4.99 price point seems to still be a barrier for acceptance for much of the iOS music community, so we are trying an experiment to get it into as many musicians hands and pockets as possible [partially inspired by the fiddlewax example]. Lets see how it goes :)
