Thanks, yes I tinker in M4L a little too, but the thing that I really miss for external gear is sysex, I know it can be done via convoluted means in M4L, but as yet haven't found a viable way.
Went for Patch Base in the end. Works solidly, can import DX7 patches & you can save presets in it. Shame I splurged 19 quid on Lemur but I may get some use out of the available microkorg, wavestation, blofeld, Octatrack & Live templates...
Brought a volca FM home yesterday. Just catching up with this thread. Judging from other comments, looks like my suspicions around why it was hiccuping during edits in the video were true (sends entire sysex dumps for each control change). A shame for sure. Was hoping to set up my MIDI controller to dig into the guts via sysex.
Haven't tried any of the editors yet. How is Patchbase treating you @sleepless?

Wanted to post back here because I discovered (by complete accident) a new option called Volca FM Buddy. This is both a library for storing DX7 patches for Korg Volca FM, and a convenient way to transmit them to the device. Even more amazing - it's completely free!
While the app "Patch Base" provided crucial functionality for getting DX7 patches to the Volca using a mobile device, it did require a $20 IAP, and I think this new "Volca FM Buddy" app is superior in several ways:
(1) It sends the sysex messages via mono/stereo 3.5 mm cable, instead of a 5-pin MIDI cable! This is a huge deal because while the Patch Base or desktop computer methods worked and were pretty reliable, you needed to have a MIDI interface, which meant you needed cabling for Lightning -> CCK/USB -> 5-pin DIN MIDI. I'm far more apt to change patches if all I need is my phone and a $2 audio cable laying around the house.
(2) It's iPhone compatible! Patch Base was not.
(3) It stores DX7/Sysex files in a simple library on the device, and it is far less laggy/crashy than Patch Base
(4) It has links to a huge library of DX7 files so you can find new ones right on your iDevice. The "Open In" functionality works perfectly.
I should note that you have to turn your phone volume all the way up to send the sysex message, and I was still getting "Input Error" about 33% of the time I tried to send one. But it's really not a big deal at all - you just clear the message and do it again, and it almost certainly works. And if it works at all, it works perfectly and you hit "Save" on the Volca FM to keep it as one of your 32 sounds.
Hope this is helpful to people - I think it's a real gamechanger for the Volca FM, which is a great device, but maybe some people don't use it as much as they'd like to because of the file transfer stuff. This makes that a heck of a lot easier.
Reminds me of my spectrum, on a good day the program would load, from cassette tape, while I made coffee on a bad day it might take several goes.

Can't get anything to transfer so far. The tempo light fades out briefly hen I hit send, but that's it.
I've already paid for Patch Base, and this app didn't exist when I bought it, so I'm not obsessed with the price. But I had so many problems with it. Importing patches into that library was slow and it would crash frequently. They also redesigned everything for v2 and I liked the old format better. I think I just prefer this app, mainly due to the use of the Sync In jack rather than setting up a MIDI interface.
Yes I think the fact you can use it from your phone without a midi interface makes it very useful.
I must admit though i'm having limited success with it, it does work sometimes for me but it often freezes the volca fm and have to restart it or doesn't successfully send the patch. It's working well for you?
I've tried on iphone SE and ipad mini2 Had best success with mini 2 so far.

Synthmata - Free online editor for Volca FM and DX7. I don't have the Volca nor a dx, so can't try it out (might need a browser that supports midi and whatnot)

No, a recent app. I have seen the one you linked @ChrisG, but haven't tried it yet.
Something interesting I saw on that link is that the Volca only listens on channel 1, so that may be why I couldn't get FM buddy to work.
