Korg Gadget Quantize

Does anyone know if you can quantize in Gadget after you have recorded? I'm having a little trouble today!

  • don't think you can sorry. you gotta adjust each note by hand i'm afraid.

  • Not unless it's a secret ninja finger move or something. Plan ahead with the quantizing.

One thing I'll say about Gadget, though. I find adjusting notes by hand to be very smooth and visually clear. I wish more iOS editors were as good.

  • This is one of the reasons 'post-quantize' has been requested over at the Gadget forums.

Sometimes 'sterile' quantize is good while in other situations it completely kills all the expressivness that 'human errors' can add to the performance.

Ideal would be to be able to quantize slelected notes/beats/meassures in Gadget and apply gradual quantize to 'humanize/dehumanize' the recorded notes :D

  • I vote in favour of implementing an on-demand Fuzzy Quantize.button.

  • I was afraid of that! I think I have my grid set incorrectly I will check it later. I never had a problem before and that's what made me look for the quantize, no biggie but that would be a bonus to have advanced quantize! Thanks everyone for your comments!

  • If Korg adds post-quantize features, I’d expect they’ll apply only to selected notes or events. Adjustable swing amount is critical for many music styles, and adjustable strength allows less rigid quantizing. Fortunately, if your playing isn’t accurate enough, editing can be done by hand. I’ve spent much time pushing notes around. When I remember the days of paper and pencil, tape, and lugging B3s around to gigs, it’s still hard to call it work. :)

  • Not sure how useful this is for your Gadget based question but in Nanostudio you can quantise your performance post recording.

Could be useful knowledge if you had the tools (desire) to record there and then use a 3rd app to feed that midi data back into Gadget.

  • Music Studio has post quantize as well.

  • Huh, I've used Gadget for a couple of years (with live quantize) and never really thought about it not having "post" quantization. Would be a good feature to add.

  • A percentage of Quantize "strength" is the ultimate, you can get your performance tighter, without going full mechanical, right on the grid. One of my favorite features in Reason and Logic. The nuances of timing are an entire dimension in sequencing.

In gadget, you can already record with the live quantize on, and then select all the notes, and shift them a liitle forward or backward, to drag the beat a little, and get some more interesting feel to the syncopation.

  • Many styles of music lag or push the beat. Another kind of quantizing uses groove templates that are derived from live performances. Auria Pro does it, as do many desktop DAWs.

That's true, but only by the set grid-resolution. Ideal would be to have arrows that move the selection by +/- ticks without having to change the grid-resolution.

Gadget will improve over time. I trust Korg will deliver sooner or later :)

BTW, a small tip if you didn't already know. If you turn Quantize on after you've recorded, a note will snap to the grid you've set very quickly and easily when you move it.

    Ok will try that!
