Mainstage Autosampler and an iPad

Just uploaded a video showing how to using the MainStage AutoSampler to sample from iOS Apps. I had no clue that MainStage had an Autosampler and it works pretty awesome. Let me know what you think.

  • Hey thanks, that was a good walk-through. I'm not familiar with Mac computers but I understand that MainStage has a lot of cool features and it's pretty affordable...and it has Alchemy!?

I often wonder how Alchemy still works perfect?

Like, ummm, what 2 IOS versions and 3 years and it still works fine on all my devices?

By far my favorite app of all time. Just wish I felt more confident using it. I await the day when it just doesn't work anymore.

Your album and songs are awesome. Nice job.

I'm with you, Alchemy is my fav. I don't even want to think about the day that iOS breaks it.

And thanks for the compliment, much appreciated!

  • @TozBourne Yea MainStage is a beast especially for only $30. and it includes Alchemy. For a live sound module, midi routing, its amazing.

  • Funny that the two Mainstage things people are talking about in this thread are both Apple acquisitions. In addition to Camel Audio, they bought and shuttered Redmatica. Redmatica's main product was 'Key Map Pro', the subject of this video.

To be able to sell it all (and a ton more) for $30 is kind of amazing.

  • When MainStage 3.2 came out with Alchemy I dusted off an old MacBook Pro just so I could have Alchemy :)

It turns out MainStage is a really great tool. I've been using it a lot. Gotta try the autosampler.

  • AutoSampler is great, I use it to create soundfonts for bs-16i and sforzando (desktop plugin)

  • what is so great about alchemy and what kind of music are you guys making with it?

Thanks for this. Autosampler is really nice.

Plenty of videos and tutorial on YT about it. It's a beast of a synth, and maybe something more (I'm speaking of the VST).

  • @kobamoto Alchemy is just awesome(VST, never used it on the iPad) Its really useful for sound design, ambient soundscapes and such, since it can use samples and granular synth stuff. The transformation Pad between the different settings is amazing as well.

  • In another thread on this same forum I found that Alchemy can be used as an AU plugin in other DAW. Anyone knows where it is located on the Mac?

  • I use Disco DSP's Bliss Sampler to go the opposite way. I auto sample VSTs and save them as SFZs and then convert them to SF2s. I then load them into my iPhone soundfont players.

AutoSampler can sample VSTs too, and Logic/Mainstage instruments. But that Bliss sampler does look impressive but perhaps too complex for my simple needs :)

@gmslayton this is good, I'm finally getting around to making some sample instruments.

Have you ever tried to use the files in ThumbJam? The ThumbJam user guide suggests that:

Additionally, if your audio file is in the AIFF format and encoded with the
pitch and looping information (the SMPL chunk) those values will be
automatically used to fill in the appropriate fields in sample editor.

I'd love to be able to make some sample sets in Mainstage and drop them straight into TJ. @sonosaurus is this possible?

  • Oh snaps this is good info, i still use my macbook and mainstage/logic quite a bit, havent fully made the full jump to ios yet. gonna try out this autosampler while im waiting for iLogic to be a thing ;)

  • Is Mainstage worth getting if you already have Logic? I already play Alchemy and other Logic synths just by booting up saved Logic tracks - am I missing much by not having Mainstage?

  • Mainstage has all the bells and whistles from logic,
But it's very different too, it's a live thing.
    It's like ab/aum vs. daw ...

It's hidden. I can't find the place where the apple au presets are saved (like the presets you made with apple au graphic eq or something) It's not in the usual places.

  • For reasons unknown, Logic does not include AutoSampler

  • It's there to save CPU. In Logic you just freeze the track.

  • Mainstage is one of the things I miss from I've sold my mac mini...

  • @Hmtx I am currently testing this out and will report back.

MainStage is amazing. Super great for live performance. I am planning on diving into a setup with MainStage, my iConnectAudio4+, and Loopy and BlocsWave.

@MonzoPro if you can shell out the $30 for MainStage its worth it. Its meant for live use but like @lala said, it has everything logic has. I would almost look at it like iOS without a DAW. You have access to all the AU, VST, and stuff in logic and its mean to create setups and play live. You have full midi control and can send and receive clock info too.

@gmslayton I've managed to get the aiff files imported from a sample set to ThumbJam, but it seems the sample data doesn't transfer. Looping or note info is not automatically transferred.

Also, I can't seem to get multi-layered velocity samples to work.

[edit: I just revived another more relevant thread for ThumbJam sampling, sorry to get this one off-topic]
