Will there ever be a modular/patcher synth app like Tangle/Reaktor/Max for iOS?
To me, the iPad is the perfect platform for something like Reaktor, Tangle, or Max, where you would use a multi-touch screen to program a patch, click-and-drag modules, zoom in and out to different parts of your patch, etc. I gather that these programs, by their nature, are much more CPU-intensive than a regular synth.
SunVox is a pretty good example of how to implement a touch-screen interface with dragging/dropping modules, patching them together, etc. However, it's still pretty clunky and is not really comparable to a patcher like Tangle/Reaktor/Max past a superficial level.
Is there any chance that we will see a synth app like this for iOS now that iPads are getting to be as fast as laptops (or as Apple says for their iPad Pro - faster than 80% of laptops out there)? Or is something like this probably not economically sensible for an app developer, considering that they may have to limit it to only run on newer iPads?

AnalogKit and Audulus 3 might fit the description if you've got the time, bot are pretty darn 'deep'...
There currently apps like Audulus, Analog kit, Jasuto, Modular, Zmors Modular, Modal Pro, MobMuPlat that might do what you need.
I own Reaktor and Max for my Mac but rarely use them any more. S'vox gets all my attention and it's plenty deep enough once you have spent some time with it. The sequencing is what makes it stand out for me.
Huh - I had never heard of any of those before. Audulus and Modal Pro look promising. Thanks for the responses.
I just listed the apps in my Modular folder but Modal Pro is pretty weak actually and I believe is no longer being updated so unless its cheap maybe skip it. Modal Pro is 9.99 I can't recommend it at that price. But the others I will vouch for.
Zamora modular is my favourite and it hosts apps!
I think zMors Modular seems like the one I will try out first. Thanks guys.
+a million
(Took the liberty of correcting spelling, no offense intended)
zMors Modular hits a balance between accessibility and extreme depth, has great audio, and includes features unseen elsewhere (you can write modules inside it in Java, import PureData modules). You build complete DAWs inside it - along with building your own instruments and FX you can build mixers, midi file players and midi sequencers...tons of maths to play with, samplers, KP Oscillators, drawable and additive Wavetable oscillators, just nuts.
Don't forget Model 15 is also modular, traditional GUI of course but touch access is very well done...and sounds so good.
And of course Sunvox!
(@dtaki Tangle would be a great port to iOS...)
None taken lol. From now on I'm going to call it Zamora thanks to the spell checker - one sexy mother of a modular![:p :p](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/tongue.png)
I know nothing about 90% of the stuff in Zmora but can still sink eight hours into fiddling with an XY pad hooked up to all these math functions I dont comprehend.
Wow. The video in the App Store sounds like complete crap. Is the developer just whacko to select those particular 28 seconds of audio, or does it really only do dorky stuff like that? That's without a doubt the worst App Store intro video I've ever seen.
Zmors Modular doesn't have audiobus support though.
Mobmuplat can load pure data patches and supports audiobus.
Zmors puredata compatibility is weird, although I know next to nothing about puredata. But I tried a bunch of downloaded pd patches and maybe one out of ten would make a sound. The in-app help doesnt indicate what the restrictions are on imported pd stuff
If i recall correctly Zmors is also the only modular with sampling. I don't know why this is, if they put a sampler in Audulus I would reinstall it immediately.
sunvox
Yeah sorry I've been meaning to get around to using Sunvox simce like four years ago
Here's a fun Zmors patch coming from a place of total cluelessness: https://www.dropbox.com/s/bh4anx66jo8wy5u/Highly Ignorant No. 7.json?dl=0
Audulus also has a sampler module...
Mobmuplat definitely loads Puredata patches, as it's not a modular synth it's a host for "apps" written in the Pd language. If you want to create your own you need your desk- or lap-top to write your Pd stuff in.
If you're real smart, Audulus 3 can get crazy. I just like to play around with it without understanding everything i'm doing. Analog Kit and zmors modular look cool too.
Is the Audulus sampler new? I distinctly remember saying to myself that there was no sampler inside.
Why has nobody ever mentioned Sunvox on any thread, ever before? (Yes, I am joking...)
Popped in there when 3 went live, I think. Wasn't in 2.
Well I fired up Audulus on this antique 4th gen and CPU was up to 50% with a simple oscillator going, looks like I'll have to shelve it again until i upgrade my pad.
So zmors modular says it is an IAA host, but can it be used in AUM as a source as well?
And it mentions AU modules, how does that end up working?
Cheers
I use it as an IAA source mostly. I assume using it as an effect is as easy.
I've also tested using it as a host for AU instruments and FX. There're are presets included that are DAW/multi-channel mixers, that can channel internal (you build) FX and instruments, but also will host AU instruments and FX. Pretty sure it also hosts both FX and instruments of the IAA stripe, the same way - I'll check once I get back to the iPad. AU and IAA stuff can be built into your instrument builds as well
I didn't realize zmors had IAA and AU integration on the module level. Back on the to-investigate list.
There's also a new app for us, PD enthusiasts: http://danomatika.com/code/pdparty
Better UI & user guide than Mobmuplat's but no Audiobus support yet
