ThumbJam v2.5.1 (NOW 2.5.2) - bug fixes with a few features

edited September 2016 in General App Discussion

This is mostly a bug fix release, but a few new features snuck in. It should be making its way through Apple's servers now.

Features:

  • Added x-axis pitch bend control mode, as well as bend sensitivity. This is something often requested over the years, especially by iPad users.

  • Improved the Continuum play mode so that it is much more usable and expressive. Added round rate control and toggle for initial snapping. If you never used continuum mode before, give it a try now! It responds a lot more like GeoSynth/GeoShred (or an actual continuum) and the MIDI output works better too with it.

  • Added a "Reset Settings to Default" in Prefs->Options

Fixes:

  • Fixed Audiobus compatibility problem on iOS7 devices
  • Fixed orientation of sample import screen on iPad
  • Fixed arp enable/latch mini buttons on iPad when recording
  • Removed rotate locking option because it is no longer possible with the iPad split view capability
  • Fixed internal shutdown issue when using Audiobus
  • Fixed several tilt pitch bend going inactive issues
  • Selecting a new split no longer affects active latched arpeggiation
  • Fixed internal metronome sync with arp with no external sync
  • Fixed errant touch display when using/dismissing menus
  • Changed behavior when loading new presets from the main menu to only override the splits if the last loaded patch was a multi

  • A fantastic app getting even better!

There are 3 modes for how dragging around works, the state is toggled through a button on the toolbar (the one with stairsteps, slanty stairs and the slash) or in Edit->Sample, namely Retrigger, Glide, or Continuum. The latter is the mode that got the improvement. There is a new control called round rate that affects how quickly it snaps to the scale when dragging.

  • @sonosaurus were there any other small tweaks or additions that made it in or is that a complete list?

    That's pretty much it!

    Thanks boss.

  • The one and only thing I do not love about tj: no quantize. it reveals how shaky I am tabla player on my iPhone. Sigh.

actually there is quantize. enable ARP and change it to Quant only. then whatever time signature you put in there only those taps will register.

It actually has quantize now, the arpeggiator feature has a Quantize Only mode, which should work nicely for your percussion needs, especially with Link sync. Some of the other arp modes work well for percussion too.

EDIT: @gonekrazy3000 was typing my answer at the same time, thanks!

This changes everything. For one thing, I no onger have to pretend it's a left-handed drummer dragging behind the beat on his fills.

@sonosaurus Hate to say it, but post-update I am getting only immediate crash. Initial pre-splashscreen appears and then closes out back to the 'desktop'. Have rebooted, no dice. Big Boy/latest. Should be noted that my Air1 (also just updated now as a comparative test) works absolutely fine.

  • @sonosaurus Curiouser and curiouser, Thumbjam doesn't now appear on my update/updated list, which is really strange, but there is that little 'newly updated' orange dot next to the TJ icon....the Mystery of Computers.

Oh craaap. I may have found your issue here. I'll be in touch....

No worries Sir. I have no doubt it'll all be fine...

  • For the record, TJ now works perfectly. Nine emails from @sonosaurus, each of them polite and to the point and some computer-wizardry far beyond my pay grade to understand and the Big Boy is breathless and fixed. There were also some guys dressed in black who abseiled down into my living room and left a cake. Seriously superior customer service all round.

Just been fiddling about with this app, and every time my attention focuses on it I end up thinking what a fantastic bit of kit it is. So elegant, yet easy to work. If only Wolfgang Palm (and other boffin developers) could make thier wonder works as accessible as ThumbJam.

You should be fine, JohnnyGoodyear had an expired beta version stuck on his.

That said, I am preparing another quick update that fixes some niggles I found last night. If any of you folks found any today, let me know ASAP and it could get fixed too.

  • Thanks for the update. I really love the pitch bend on x-axis feature.

This is my kind of feature. Great split screen midi companion to infinite looper... Means you can record perfect quantised arps and notes into infinite looper as a midi looper.

  • @sonosaurus I'm wondering if perhaps there should be a "global sample settings" type thing. I find myself building up loops with an instrument I've got the perfect glide settings or keyboard sizing set up, and not really having a specific sound in mind, wishing I could change the instrument and keep those settings. It can be tedious to adjust in the middle of a jam. Does this make sense? Am I missing something?

That actually makes perfect sense, I found myself wishing for the same thing yesterday! At this point, it would have to be an option to "preserve performance controls" when loading presets, similar to the "Keep existing key/scale" already there. The question is which controls should be preserved... there's an argument to being able to preserve everything in each part of the Edit pages. What if the "Keep existing key/scale" in the preset chooser became instead a grid of individually toggle-able buttons:

    Preserve Current:
    [ Key/Scale | Drag/Glide | Controls | FX ]

I worry that accidents could happen here too if people forget that some of these are on/off when loading presets and get frustrated. But hiding an option like this away is even worse. And should some of them be ignored when loading multis....
