The Get Down on Netflix - brilliant!
Everyone is going gaga for Stranger Things on Netflix. I thought it was good - but recently finished watching The Get Down and I think this show is soooo brilliant and deserves more attention. Anybody catch it? It's amazing in all apsects. It's about the rise of hip-hop in New York in the late 70's. It's so well done and totally infectious and fun to watch. And the best thing about it is all the amazing music - hip-hop, funk, soul, disco, dance! As I was watching I'd recognize a beat or a bassline here and there - and others sounded familiar but couldn't quite place it. Then I read an interview with Baz Luhrman and he said they used some originals from the era, plus had some modern artists remix or cover songs from that time, and also had some modern artists (Sia, Niles Rodgers) compose original songs that were in the style of songs from that era. The show does a great job of capturing the magic of a group of young kids coming together and making a new style of music that was on the cusp of breaking out. The cast of kids are all great and talented - future stars for sure.
I can't recommend this show to anybody enough. If you're like me, (a TV junkie) and have been watching all the great HBO, AMC, etc. shows of the past few years this show is a nice change of pace - as in it's not so dark and real-life gritty, etc... it's just a fun, infectious watch with some great, great music. It's also unlike anything else I've ever seen on TV before too. If you know Baz Luhrman you'll have an idea of what to expect.

The wife will never go for it/let me etc
Is it better than Empire? Or Vice? Those were a letdown.
never seen Empire. Vice? You meant Vinyl maybe? That show was terrible. I will say it's one of the best tv shows I've ever seen that dealt with music subject matter. I just read that each episode cost about $10 million to produce - so that tells you a bit about how much goes into the show.
why wouldn't she?
@Halftone ha yeah I meant Vinyl. Might as well have been called Vice for all the unearned vulgarity they shoehorned in. Thanks for the recommendation I love music stories.
No, sounds good, but if there aren't frockcoats or dragons it's not allowed....which doesn't mean I won't watch it alone on the Big Boy....but then, as Mister Beckett reminded us, When one is alone, one is all alone....
A real winner for sure. " Comic book type violence." My thoughts exactly. The actor in the lead role (Ezekial?) is a great talent. Love how they brought Livin For the City in when they did, and the low key cover of Ball of Confusion. Too good. No spoilers though. Haven't finished it yet.
Sorry, I refuse to be lulled into a state of normalcy bias. Free your mind from the callus producing fat being fed to you under the guise of entertainment, and you are one step closer to winning the war.
Nailed it!
Don't be sorry. It's not for you. Fair enough.
I have to disagree with you guys about the first half of the season. I liked the first 5 episodes of Vynil but later it wasn't about the music anymore. The first episode that was directed by Martin Scorsese was the best. The scenes with Buck Rogers and the New York Dolls concert were great. The worst thing was Mick Jagger's son as the punk rocker. Very annoying.
Yeah. The lead kid is a real talent. But the lead girl is great too with an amazing powerful voice. And all the other kids are really good too
Or: no one knows where the nose goes when the doors closed. What's a frockcoat?
Vinyl took me a few episodes to get next to, but I was left wanting at the end. That's a good thing. Mick Jaggers son? I agree. A bit over played.
You're gonna be left wanting. It wasn't renewed..
I started watching the other night, the first episode was great. Very interesting style, but I loved it. Makes me remember watching Beat Street when it first came out...
Does it support AB, IAA etc? Link?
