Looking for advice on computer interface (Again)

edited September 2016 in General App Discussion

I used to do most of my music on my Mac Pro. That is hooked up to a Saffire LE that goes out to my monitors. I can record into it and it plays the music from my computer through a firewire connection.

Now I am doing most of my music on the iPad and PC. I would like to bring the speakers over, but I don't know if it's possible to use the Saffire on my PC because of the firewire. I don't think you can just do a simple firewire to USB adapter.

I am using an iRig to record my iPad synths, guitar and mics to my iPad and computer. I'm listening to my music on phones. Seems a shame for my studio monitors to sit over in the other end of the room unused.

Anybody have some advice for me? Either...

A way to make my Saffire LE work on a PC
or
An inexpensive device that lets me hook up to my computer or iPad via USB and output to speakers via 1/4" plugs.

Thanks!

Too little info. Personally i use steinberg ur22 mkii interface and its outputs to old technics su-v300 stereo amp which powers my speakers. You need an amp since your speakers arent active and doesent have amp built in(i dont really understand how you are using them now if you dont have an amp..). I assume that your interface isnt compatible with ios. So get an audio interface that is compatible with ios. If your midi controllers have midi out, be sure that your interface has midi ports(steinberg ur22 has, so does roland duo-capture, other cost quite a bit more afaik). If they are usb, get a usb hub and put the interface and controllers there. Or use a regular aux cable to stereo amp where you would plug your headphones.

You can connect FireWire only to a FireWire input on PC, and NEVER! Hot connection, you could fry your Saffire.
There is a FW connection on the back of your PC. (Turn SC off when connecting or disconnecting the FW cable).

I hope I didn't misunderstood your questions, but one thing is sure, unpowered speakers need an AMP.
And firewire SC is connected with FW cable to your PC.
    Does this answer your Q?

Edit: saw your card, too many outputs, I think it was done for powered monitors,.

  • First, thank you @ToMess and @soundklinik for trying to help me.

At closer examination, my speakers are indeed powered. The amplifier is built into the subwoofer.
So I was able to hookup the whole shebang to the headphone output with a Y-adapter. But that's not a healthy long term option.

For numerous reasons I've decided to order an iConnectAUDIO2+.

I'll leave the saffire hooked up to the Mac for when I record into Logic. I have an 88 key controller there that I will probably want to use now and then.

    Thanks again!

  • I was about to suggest the Apogee Duet, but since you already made your choice, congratulations!

Im pretty sure you can use the controller with your ipad as well. Or at least hook your ipad to computer and basically use it as a sound bank for your computer

  • @tomess I've been watching a lot of videos, and I believe I will be able to play my iPad synths directly into my DAW using my MIDI keyboard controller and use iPad effects too.

I see that a lot of people on this forum are using this and the iConnectAudio4+.

Yea, but you dont need iconnectivity for that. Just plug the ipad via the lightning port to usb on your computer and use some app like studiomux to route the sounds(i do this and works works wonders). You can also hook the keyboard to ipad straight if your keyboard supports it, or if it has midi ports and you have some midi to usb converter or audio interface with midi in(i use steinberg ur 22 mkii for that).

  • @ToMess I have been using studiomux to route my iPad synths into my DAWs, but that requires a connection to the lightning port.

When I'm doing that it means I don't have a way to connect my controller to my iPad.

Is there a way that you can plug your MIDI controller into your iPad and then use studiomux? Perhaps with powered USB hubs?

Using this device I can use my controller to play the sounds in my iPad into my computer. And it all stays in the wired digital domain with minimal latency.

  • In this case I believe you would plug your controller into your PC, and route the midi via your daw back to the iPad.

Just route midi from controller through computer to ipad and sounds from ipad to daw if you have ipad connected to computer. This way you can play ipads synths/whatever with your controller and have the sounds go to your daw from your ipad seamlessly as if your ipad was just another synth in your daw

I would have suggested the ZOOM U24...made for iPad, MIDI in/out can be powered with a battery pack...
    119euros
But I guess you made your choice

  • Thanks for your help everybody. :)

  • The iconnectaudio4+ is a lot better than studiomux due to the Midi host port. The latency is a ton less than routing from midi controller's->daw->ipad.... In the iconnectaudio4+ the midi controller is connected to both devices so the latency is minimal. Plus you can do some fantastic routing like controller=>iPad=>daw as opposed to controller=>daw=>iPad=>daw in the case of using thumbjam to do filtering o midi notes etc. The latency is cut almost in half in that scenario.

  • I received my iConnectAUDIO2+ yesterday. I'm on the verge of sending it back. I will keep trying to make it work the way I want, but so far I have found the software to be unstable on both my PC and iPad. My PC doesn't always recognize their ASIO driver and the iPad apps don't always recognize that the iPad is attached to the device.

When it works, I love it, but it's been dodgy so far and so I may send it back.

In the meantime, I am looking into the Zoom that @soundklinik suggested and the steinberg ur22mkII that @tomess recommended. The apogee duet is out of my price range at the moment, but thank you @theconnactic

Anything anybody wants to tell me about their favorite USB interface under $200 will be appreciated. Why do you like it?

Also, advice on a device that is particularly friendly to iPads, as the iConnectAUDIO2+ is, would be particularly appreciated.

    Thanks, as always.

  • My sales guy at Sweetwater suggested the PreSonus AudioBox iTwo. Anybody have this?

I do and I like it a lot; it just works. BTW, I got it after returning the ICA4+ to Sweetwater. It was very flaky for me as well.
