The mighty Impaktor (video)
I've been quiet for a while, busy building stuff but I've also been messing around with music stuff on regular basis. Most recently I went to a rather hippy party on the barge on the Thames and had a chance to play a little impaktor set by the fire pit. Needless to say it went gloriously well and I got a lot of positive feedback about the sound etc etc. I'll be heading for a proper rave on the 17th to do some more testing but in the meantime here's some audio samples of what I've been up to.

This is great and inspiring. I love this app, but I can't get it to cooperate with any other app at ALL.
And I don't recognize the interface with the mutes at all! Must look again. Thanks.
That is excellent !
Love it! This app just moved up my list. Now about that tutorial you're doing...
Might just have to dig this out again, awesome stuff fella!
Groovy, mate!
What mic do you use for live performance? Not the built in iPhone mic?
Whew! and thanks for the reminder to open up Impaktor just now for a happy 30 minute jam on the top of my iPad case
Nice! I hope there will be a version 2.0 with much needed additions such as multiple inputs, Split screen support and MIDI out.
What do you mean? As in to trigger impaktor or record the session? If the latter, I recorded it via impaktor's internal recorder and just run it through audio mastering app. I'm actually quite pleased with the results as it normally doesn't sound half as good through the headphones as through the speaker. Probably because the speaker's resonance, saturation and rattle give it THAT much needed organic dirt
I'd love midi for the knobs and transport and link etc but after the last conversation with the dev I'm not optimistic. He sees it more like a standalone instrument a la korg wavedrum rather than a drum sequencer. I can see why he might be hesitant adding midi as it must be a lot of work doing from scratch albeit he might be able to reuse code from his other projects
Yes, that. Is the Roland pad plugged in to the iPhone somehow?
Ah yeah. I have sonicport audio interface mounted underneath the Roland epad. So the pad is permanently plugged into the sonicport. Then when I need to play I run a stereo lead from that to the amp and plug in the iPhone which is magnetically attached to the top of the epad. I find it a super rugged solution for campfires
Brilliant, thanks for the details. Is that SonicPort holding up to average stage abuse? Old or new version?
As long as you don't pull cables at funny angles
That was excellent.
Like the technique of changing pitch live in the 303 type sound at the end.
I imagine the campfire people were amazed at the guy with the iPhone and the funny rubber plate.
Yes, I think the secret is to edit sounds while recording which requires some acrobatics to press record and go back to edit screen for tweaking even if it isn't impossible to assign filter, resonance or pitch to pressure and modulate it that way. This is why midi learn would be fantastic but it so ain't gonna happen.
This is one of the reasons I love this forum - it's full of very talented people that inspire old duffers like me to have a go.
I've had this app for ages, but never really used it, but this has shown me what I might be missing out on.
Excellent stuff.
Cheers Monzo, means a lot coming from you, the well respected trouble maker
No trouble here Captain, this is the new improved Pro version
Nicely done! I learned a few things about impaktor from watching too. How much time do you spend designing sounds? You aren't using the presets there...
Nice beat
Not much really, probably an hour a week. It is so easy to plug and play that I can do some while waiting for the kettle to boil.
I made this video partly to remind the developer of the genius thing he's develop to maybe prompt him to develop further. The other reason was to show the palette of sounds it can make. Here I'm using a lot of sounds made with the synth module and I didn't skimp on distortion which makes the sounds a bit more meaty.
This thing is capable of simple basses, kicks, percussion, poly sounding synths and is massive with special effects especially when tweaking the knobs while playing. When I program I just think of a sound, then try and dial it in. Most recently I sat down to program a drone/digididgeridoo kind of sound and it worked pretty well. Of course it doesn't and like a didge but that's the beauty of it, I would be using sample tank if I wanted to get a didge sound.
I've been leaving it at home when gigging because it's just one more thing to carry but now I'm thinking of starting a project with impaktor at the centre for outdoor rave/wilderness/full moon/campfire kind of events. With the Skytec speaker I'm using it can easily be played alongside a bunch of acoustic drums and isn't much heavier to carry.
Ah yeah, the presets aren't very dynamic but defo a good starting point for further tweaking.
Yeah, good stuff @supadom. My main issue with iOS apps is that there are so many cool ones that I never feel like I get deep into any of them (outside of maybe Loopy). It'd probably be a good idea to make a pact with myself to become more of an expert on Impaktor or Egoist or whatever and really try to dig deep into the feature set where creativity can flourish.
For the sound that comes in at about :18 in the video--do you get the different "kick/snare" sounds from one patch that varies that much just by velocity?
Haha yeah, aren't we on the same boat. So much for IOS music being a dying concept.
I find these days I keep a new app on the iPad for about a week and if I haven't clicked with it it goes straight to the cloud. Of course some come back come back with a vengeance like in Samplr's case whereby after watching someone's video something just clicks. Currently though, despite having a 64gb of space I use about 5% of the apps I actually own and that probably is an overestimate.
The sound at :18 is an edit of a preset called djembe if I remember well. To program such stuff you need to keep both modules on separate velocities using the orange and green sections with target on the buttons. Those, when pressed allow to tweak the amount of velocity the given parameter will respond to. Try it with pitch first to get a better idea. The green one has continuous curve while the orange one works in steps which is great for scales if you're using the pitch feature.
I'd love to make a videotutorial for it (for a selfish reason to get the developer to make it awesomer) but I'm still going blind in most cases.
Has @giku_beepstreet ever given any kind of indication that he is planning to develop impaktor any further? Anytime the status of the app is being discussed it seems there isn't any response coming from him. Does it mean there is no hope?
Yes, there has been a discussion between me and him. There has been a vague target set for the end of 2015 for impaktor 2 but other things took priority (dagger, Sunrizer for pc) and I'm not sure where it's at right now. I don't want to bug him directly but maybe that is exactly what I should do?
Make the video?
Awesome video! That beat/groove is so fresh
Exactly!
@supadom
Great video, you get so much out of that app it is unbelievable. But beyond the technical part, cool track and groove too.
Thanks. I'm a lazy bum when it comes to programming sounds but have to say what comes out of this one is enough of a motivation to keep tweaking. It is an incredibly deep machine considering there's so few controls on the edit page.
Give me impaktor, loopy and samplr all in sync and I'll take over the world
