Ruismaker FM │ Review and guide - haQ attaQ 172

Ruismaker FM review and guide! Ruismaker FM by Bram Bos is a new FM drum synthesizer and it sounds brilliant! It differs a lot in both sounds and functionality compared to it's sister app Ruismaker.

  • Awesome! Thanks for making this and glad to see it passed your Trap-test B) !

  • @brambos I was so happy when it only took about 5 seconds to tweak the bass drum to suit my Trap needs. RuismakerFM is brilliant. You've done a great job with it!

  • Try this under AUM, and a little + appears allowing you to save user presets. Hopefully, this will be added to app under Cubasis in the next update.

  • Ruismaker FM (and the original Ruismaker) has some kind of nice groovie feeling that is hard to resist!
    Worldclass app!

Very nice tutorial. But what I find is missing in these is the actual set up. Do you play your beats on the piano keyboard? I tried to assign the C#, D#, etc. to pads in Cubasis recently. And I could not make it work. Any suggestions? It is this extra, slightly irritating step that has prevented me from using Ruismaker as a midi track.

It should work out of the box. Have you switched to conventional GM key mapping in the settings? In that case the drums will be mapped to different keys.

Setting up the pads in Cubasis is a lot of work (for any drum app), considering you have to do it over again for every project and your mapping can't be saved in a template as far as I know. That's why I always use the piano roll. It's just simpler.

Just sent an update of Ruismaker FM to the Appstore for review.

version 1.0.1 will have some minor additions and fixes:

    • "randomize all" feature was added
    • double tap on knobs centers value on 0, double tap on "init" still randomizes the current channel
    • random can be triggered via MIDI (MIDI CC#109 with value 0 will randomize the first channel, 1 the second channel, etc.)
    • optimized CPU usage in various places
    • fixed a minor bug where Cubasis could sometimes not select the first factory preset
  • What i like best about ruismaker FM is how well it sounds with the OTO machines biscuit. Especially with the waveshapers: Mayhem!

  • Thanks for doing these videos....

That's too bad about the pads. It's easiest to build up a drum beat with pads. I also I really like the step-sequener ability in dedicated drum apps, especially Elastic Drums. I guess I can do that in Modstep, but I recall having a tricky time getting the correct keyboard there; the chromatic keyboard doesn't include all eight keys, right?
I wish there was an option in Cubasis or Modstep where I could click on a button that says USE RUISMAKER KEYBOARD. Or something....

    Just keeps getting better. B)
I had one thought while jamming tonight. It would be nice if there could be a separate reverb send level for each pad. Some stuff just doesn't sound all that good with as much reverb as I'd like to use on other sounds. I know I can accomplish the same by using more than one instance, but it would be easier to tweak and manage that way.

Isn't it just a case of finding the correct bit of the keyboard and just hitting the black keys only.

I've always found it pretty easy.

i find it pretty easy as well. Also setting up the pads for Rusimaker in Cubasis just takes ten or fifteen seconds.

in modstep, if you switch your scale to f# pentatonic, you'll have all Ruismaker keys next to each other

    Today's top-tip right there!

That's what I was looking for. Thanks.

  • @brambos I've been 'thining' (too much as usual).

Since Ruismaker FM can produce quite melodic percussion sounds I though that an extended keyboard layout might be a suitable option.

Think about it. Place each 'pad' on a separate octave with say F# as the root/base-note.

So F#0 for first instrument, F#1 the second, F#2 for the third and so on..
This would give at least a few semitones Up/Down for playing melodies or bass-lines or simply tuned percussion instruments.

If extended key-range is needed one just needs to duplicate the instrument and tune it up or down a as many octaves as needed.

    Does it make any sense?

Clever if it works- especially if you have 88 keys like me.

  • I hear you guys B)

  • I like that idea.

    Wait, what? Had no idea!

Awesome. That's worth dedicating some hardware buttons towards for beat munging. I'll be asking for a way back to the original sound next though, be warned. :)

+2 @ melodic Ruismaker FM suggestions above. Though I haven't tried automating pitch yet. Maybe it's consistent enough as is?

  • I like Ruismaker FM for what it is and turning it into a proper synth might be a bit 'out of scope'.
I trust the dev knows what he's doing.

I'd go for adding a third AU to the family...focused on melodic sounds

We never know what will happen :D
