Any troubles connecting up the Bluetooth midi to any apps?
Any issues with it dropping Bluetooth connection occasionally?

@RedSkyLullaby and anybody else, If you're wondering about XKey Air connectivity with any particular apps, please list them here, and any I have (I haz TOO MANY) I'll check.

I am thinking of getting one if it works ok with Auria Pro, animoog, neosoul keys, thor, nave, photophore, isem, imini, sunrizer

Are there apps you have that it does not seem to work with?

  • I have the non-Bluetooth Air 37. I guess I can see the draw in going wireless for a keyboard controller, but at the expenses of latency (estimated to be about 20ms), which would probably be in addition to any further latency from AudioBus, etc., I just didn't think it was worth it.

I think the XKey controllers are quality products for what they are. But the keys and layout really are different than a traditional keyboard. In my case, my piano skills weren't that great to begin with, so I didn't have any good habits to "unlearn".

There are few portable keyboards with aftertouch as well so that also appeals to me.
Would be interested how the velocity sensitivity is

  • its a good piece of hardware.
but i dont like the polyaftertouch in it,
the aftertouch movements are so small that i allways got a release instead of the aftertouch function...
okay its a another liga but the roli rise is 10x more usefull....

did you want my old xkey AIR? played for 2hours in a non smoking studio? ;-)

Is it the 37 key. If you are putting it on ebay or something let me know

The xkey is setup by default to use incoming velocity to set an aftertouch level. If you go into the xkey configuration app and turn this off the poly aftertouch works well in my experience.

You can configure the sensitivity to your taste in the xkey config app. There are 4 presets or you can draw in your own velocity curve.

Not to hijack the thread, but I was considering XKey Air 37 and tried it out but hated the clacky sound. I got a Korg Microkey Air instead and am very happy with it (I think the Korg supports sustain pedal too, which last I knew the XKey didn't?) :)

Hmm. It appears like it might not. The $199 Xkey 37 DOES support both 5-pin DIN MIDI and a Sustain pedal with a special (and somewhat fragile) dongle you attach to the side. Given that the Bluetooth version may not have that feature, and costs $299 (about double what the Korg BT keyboard costs), that's a further problem with the value.

All I can say about the keys (if you don't have the opportunity to use them in person before buying) is that they are probably more similar to the buttons of a Korg nanoKEY than they are to a traditional non-weighted synth key. For some, that's a complete non-starter.

BUT, I will say that as strange as the Xkey looks, you do adapt to it, and velocity on the keys does work. There is a both a desktop and an iPad app that you can use to adjust velocity curves - I opted for the one where it is more sensitive (lighter presses result in higher velocity) because I seemed to have a light touch with the buttons and didn't want to be playing quiet all the time.

It also has polyphonic aftertouch, a feature I don't use but understand that many controllers lack.

Is the physical noise of the keys much more clacky than a regular mini keyboard?

  • @RedSkyLullaby, I have the original XKey 25 and the keys are very clackity. I am not sure if they improved on this with newer models. The noisey keys are the main thing I dislike about the unit. The aftertouch and modulation button take some getting used to.

Have you thought of a McMillin K-Board or QuNexus? They are limited to 25 keys and not bluetooth; but look very impressive with their expressive capabilities.

I'd have to say yes. If that's a big bother to you, probably look elsewhere. Again, think Korg nanoKey, but with keys that are bigger.

If I'm playing with headphones, I don't even really notice it. With some near-field monitors, yeah, I can hear it out loud. But I don't think of the XKey as a live performance tool - it's more meant for studio/DAW use and obviously that extraneous noise won't be picked up when you are recording direct through an interface.

Thanks. I'm mainly using with headphones in bed. Can just see my wife rolling over at 2am and telling me to stop that incessant f&@$ing clacking

  • I think I may want something that does not exist (bluetooth midi 37+ Full size keys with very small physical footprint) or a Roli seaboard 49 key would certainly be nice but dont have $1k to drop on a controller

How about the upcoming K-Board Pro 4 (see link below)? Not bluetooth though.

I hope the production model has a lot better design?

    That looks pretty nice too.

  • Is anyone having trouble with their Xkey air losing signal in Beatmeaker 3? I lose signal when I press stop or rec. It only does it in Beatmaker.
