Strumming

I've been trying the Logic Remote and Guitar Capo+ to record MIDI strumming for a song I'm working on, and I'm not entirely happy with them; not quite expressive/sloppy enough for my wants. I also played with Guitarism, which I like more, but that was audio only, if there's MIDI out I can't find it.

Are there better options in this space?

Guitarism has midi out! You can actually send to 4 seperately midi channels. No midi in though

  • I can't find it! Hints appreciated... & apologies if I'm an idiot

Slide the arrow on bottom right of screen to the left

This should reveal 4p which is the midi bit.

Depending on how recently you bought the app this may or may not be an IAP.

  • Great feature. Slap myself for not using it more.

I've never been satisfied with any of the guitar apps for reproducing strumming - too mechanical so I just record my guitar in. There are so many nuances of pressure, speed and direction that occur naturally when you play a set of chords, that it's almost impossible for an app to reproduce this in a natural sounding way. Some get close, but it's never going to be as good as the real thing (unless it's played by a crap guitarist).

I agree with Monzo on this one. It might sound like a guitar, but it never feels like one. I have the same aversion to the Funk Drummer and Soft Drummer stable of apps. They sound truly amazing, but there's something...unnerving. I think you have to be a drummer or a guitarist to make these apps not exist in the Uncanny Valley of emulated instruments. To me, anyway.

I get it; you want a guitar sound. But if you want the cultural reference, say, of a strummed acoustic guitar, and not simply the timbre and frequency range of the instrument? You need to find a guitarist. (Good news? Guitarists like to play and will do what you want for a beer or two.)

  • Thanks guys. It works great. I don't know why I was totally blind to that, I guess my brain must have just decided 4P meant something else.

Yup. Not for everything, but when I find the right sound (a lot in Thor for some reason), it's like nothing else...

The good ones usually cost whiskey

  • CordPolyPad has a strum feature up down random and a speed setting. Hook it up to Thumbjam and boom.

  • Find myself wishing some adventurous dev will bring out an iPad version of the Oberheim Strummer. Did anyone here ever use one of those? One in the series of PerfX midi filters that Oberheim produced in early '90's, it took chords played from a keyboard and turned them (in myriad customizable ways) into strums/riffs/chops that a guitar player might produce. A very musical tool, - the PerfX line also included the Drummer (drum emulator) and Cyclone (turbocharged arpeggiator), each as a neat little grey box with indecipherable 2-digit LED readout. I still have and use my Strummer and Cyclone, but app versions of these would be sweeeeet....

    Yep...I don't play guitar yet...so I just invite friends over...so much better.

@amarok There are a lot of computer programs out there similar to the Oberheim Strummer. I've been using AAS's Strum GS-2 for awhile now. It's a lot of fun. I discovered it when it's limited edition, Strum Session came free with nanoKontrol software. But I just bought Komplete 11, which includes the "Strummed Acoustic" app. It's more realistic-sounding because it's sampled not modeled, but doesn't offer as many musical options of as Strum GS-2.

I am a guitarist, and I have lots of guitars in the house, but I enjoy strumming apps. I find them really helpful for songwriting. And it's helpful for me to have a solid rhythm track set down that I can play over later.
