Poison-202 │ Review and guide - haQ attaQ 173
Poison 202 review and guide episode! Jim Pavloff the developer of Poison-202 is a genius sound engineer. Not only does the presets sound good, they're also packing some serious nostalgia timbres. Then again I normally don't get synthesizers for the factory presets. I get synthesizers for the sounds they can make....however, in this case I would make an exception...

Nice overview of the synth, and thanks for the heads up on Jim's vids, just watched a couple and that guy has an amazing ear and know how on sound
Yes, the sound design on the presets is at least as impressive as the synth itself!
@AndyPlankton I think I stumbled upon Jims videos a few years back and I was absolutely blown away by them. The guys is a genius indeed!
@brambos I completely agree with you. I wonder how much time he spent on doing them. I have to ask the guy.
Still not really getting this one, but bow to my betters...
Just put a donk on it...
Come on AU!
Edit: seems like a bad ass iPad version of a bass station 2! With effects
It's good but not BS2.
Stuff magazine have made it there app of the week.
When was this officially released? There's already 10 reviews of the app on the store which seems like a lot so soon. One of them couldn't say enough good things and yet was two stars. So is this thing awesome or what?
I actually bought it today after dithering - I already have lots of synths, do I really need another, you know the sort of thing. And yes, I think it sounds awesome! I'm not a huge fan of many of the presets (although I know others love them) but it is very accessible and easy to create your own. I have a Roland Gaia and it has a lot of similarities, so I immeduately felt at home, and the sound quality is top notch. And it's a lot cheaper than a new System 8!
I feel like I'm pretty covered in this area. Thinking mostly of iOS classics like Sunrizer and Artic—not exactly sure what this is offering on top of those. Not that it doesn't sound great.
While Poison-202 does lack some 'features'(For me it's the envelope control of pulse-width and control over start-phase of the LFOs as well as 'tempo-sync' for Delay and LFO) It's still a very fun synth to tweak.
It does 2OP PM/FM with all the waves using the cross-mod and the envelopes can thus be used to affect modulation amount making it practically 50% of the Chiang-Mai Gadget.
It also works pretty nicely with IAA-Hosts such as Cubasis and AUM.
Sure. I'd love to see Rolands 'System-8' or the 'Super Natural Synth Engine' as iOS app too but I doubt it will ever happen...
Poison-202 is just around 8MB in size which makes it a good alternative it storage-space is an issue
It's not super expensive and deserves a place on my iPad and iPhone.
Also it is a pretty easy synth to program and get good patches
The presets are quite educational in 'Steal that Sound' kind of way.
My iPad just asked me when Poison would be available as an AU. I had no idea so I told it I would politely ask online.
Jim is working on it. He even posted a few screenshots on his fb-page
Id say that the presets are exactly what im looking for(been loving prodigy for 20 years and like to steal their sounds), and usually using the modwheel takes the sound to a whole new level that i cant even dream of creating. Maybe one day when i decide to get more into programming synths, and i think the presets will be very educational in that.
I think sunrizer is great as well and there are many really good presets for it as well(especially if you google some extras), but more usually i end up using poison 202 instead, or one sound from sunrizer and 2-4 from poison.
Cool thanks, I'll relay the message to iPad
Can't wait for this to become AU and therefore sequencable with other apps, the hardware midi in only is preventing me using this with any seriousness at the moment. Same goes for MiniSynthesizer, great to play live, but cannot sequence without routing midi through midi thru ports on an external keyboard.
You can 'host' Poison-202 in any IAA-Host (It's an IAA-Instrumet after all) say AUM and route the midi from your sequencer to it. No need to use external keyboards
I bought this on the day it arrived. I absolutely love it. I wish I could figure out a way to access the presets without scrolling through them all, as cool as the rollodex way it goes.
Ahhhh, that's where I was going wrong, I usually just load instruments externally while jamming and then load as IAA when I get something going, that's how come I missed it.
Cheers Samu
