EU/UK iOS zone question (not directly music related)

I'm moving to Dublin in a week or two and as my old android phone is almost out of it's contract and I've got an investment in Apples App Store through my music apps, I'm going to pick up an iPhone SE there. Anyone know if there will be any issues regarding buying an iPhone in a European place and using it with all the apps I've bought in the UK app store?

Cheers,
Oscar

  • I think it is more related to where your bank account is and therefore your Apple ID. but as usual I'm just guessing so wait for a more competent answer.

  • Country specific App Stores is a 'bag of hurt' that Apple should have fixed a long time ago...

It all has to do with different taxes and licensing rules in different countries and makes it a real pain especially when moving to another country as not all apps are available in all countries app stores and there are many country-specific apps.

Switching stores in the App Store from one country to another also messes up the update procedure since the app store has to be changed to the store where the app was originally purchased in order to download updates...

This also messes up things for a globe-trotter who is trying to download some country-specific apps.

Keeping an iOS device with apps downloaded from multiple countries is a real pain in the rear.

If the app is available in the destination country and registered to the Apple ID it is possible to 'buy' it again but it will be a 'free' download, far from an optimal solution especially if one owns a lot of apps.

Without getting into too much politics but as long as we have multiple countries where each country has different laws rules and regulations we can just forget about being truly global...

  • If you're not moving permanently, keep using your current store. I moved abroad from Dublin some time ago, but I still use the Irish Store with no issues.

  • Thanks all. So (correct me if I'm wrong) I'm getting the impression that if I keep my UK bank account open, that I can just keep using the phone (bought in Dublin) with my UK App Store/Apple account? Then if necessary, I can transfer my apps by 'free download' to a new account later?

Yes. You can use the old account. Not sure what you mean by free download but you can also use multiple App Store accounts on one Idevice. Whenever updating apps that aren't from the currently logged in iTunes account it just asks you for the password. It's pretty painless imho,

Keep your Apple ID as there is currently no way to transfer apps to a new Apple ID.

I do not know how Gift-Cards work in other countries but I suspect there is different gift-card balance for each country allowing to user the purchase apps without the need to have a credit-card associated with the country.

  • Ok cheers all, I think I'll just keep my UK account for now as we're making an abrupt move. Less extra work the better initially. I'll possibly move everything over later when we get more settled in.

  • You can use family sharing to link multiple accounts.....or so I'm told.
