Am I crazy? Korg iM1 sounds better than most modern synths...

So... Maybe I'm crazy, or maybe I'm just a child of the 80s... But I have a few modern synths... Roland, Yamaha, etc...

I also have the $14 Korg iM1 for my iPad, and I feel like, just based on sounds (I play live.. Not sequencing or anything) I end up liking the Korg sounds better than just about anything I can find on my current modern Synths...

So much so that I'm actually considering buying a used Korg M1 to play live (as the iPad with controller scares me a bit for live playing...

Anyone else feel this way? Is there a current Korg synth that sounds as good as the M1 does?

Thanks! Love to hear your thoughts...

Best,

Ben

  • I also use the iM1 for live use, and loving it! The rich pads are just great. So far it hasn't failed even once. I do have an old iPad 4 configured as a backup just in case.
I combine it with other iOS synths and AUM.

  • For live church worship Korg sounds are awesome! The iM1 for me is the closest sounds to my beloved Korg Trinity V3.

  • It is totaly subjective. The only synth sounds I liked in the 80s came from EBM (yes that is a B not a D). There may be some preset sounds on the iM1 that I would like but I just can't wade through the layers of 80s trauma and icky feelings to get to them.

  • Korg is a long term contender in the IOS game with a great reputation.
I'd simply trust their claim of 'faithful reproduction' and stick with the iM1.
There's no more risk playing the iPad live than that an original fails in the middle of the gig.
Afaik M1 and Wavestation displays may develope annoying beep sounds over time and eventually fail (backlight exhausted), buttons are a common source of trouble with synths of that time, etc...
A single synth is very reliable - a complex setup with switching through several apps may be different, though.

Not to forget the bonus resonance feature, easier sound selection, extended fx and those Chaos Pads.

There's possibly already a Trinity in the Church...

  • BRILLIANT! :)

    And vaguely naughty.

  • I think also the iM1 are really Great.

  • So anyway these two nuns and a priest walk into a , never mind.

  • ...and the nuns ask the priest if he knows a good synth player and he says "iM1" :s

And the bartender leans over to say no offense intended father, the im1 is a fine piece of technology, but every nun needs a synthi.

  • ROTFL!!! No more please! :)

  • Actually it wouldn't surprise me that iM1 sounds better than an M1.

  • There are certainly some important extras that give it more sonic scope than the original, such as resonance on the filter.

  • I love combining them- iM1 is great for this, but individually they are mostly meh. Very subjective.

LMAOF! < I'm not one to over-use that acronym either.

    "Before Abaraham was, iM1."

  • I worked in a music store in '93. I heard the M1 and the 01W all day. M1 sounded better .. dacs, converters? I dunno

  • Forgive me father, for I have synthed. I love my original M1, I bought it new in 1990 and aside from replacing 2 small buttons, it has never failed. My 2 main studio boards, I don't think I will ever retire them; my Korg M1 and Korg X2. If you can find a decent used X2, it may be a good alternative to the M1. Same sound architecture, with the advantage of a larger keyboard, 16 track sequencer instead of 8, much more RAM, and a vastly improved Piano sample. (the M1 piano is one sound I never cared for.)
But there are a few items for the iM1 wish list...
I do use iM1 quite a bit, but there are a few features missing from the original that I miss a lot: The 'B' sound bank is not there, so quite a few sounds that never made it to the mobile platform I've needed to recreate manually. Also, Korg was a pioneer in the total workstation concept, with multi-timbal abilities and on-board sequencing. I would think it would have been very easy to include the 8-track sequencer with the app version. I would love to use it as a stand-alone app/sequencer, with the added benefit of Darwin having a linear sequencer that could run within Gadget - how cool would that be? The original M1 also had an editable tempo track...one of my pet peeves with most iOS sequencers is the locked-in strict tempo...not all of us are writing dance music, I want to be able to have my music breathe from measure to measure, but the iPad stuff can get robotic quickly, I sure wish more devs would employ tempo tracks.

M1 was my workhorse. Bought it when it first came out in the late ‘80s. I love the iM1… but it’s not alone: Alchemy, SynthMaster, Animoog… FabFilter Twin is nice... it really depends on the kind of music. iM1 is an important piece in Gadget for me because it covers so much ground, especially for more “traditional” type music.

  • I really like iM1 but don't love it. Where it excels for me is when it's used as part of a multilayered sound. Often use it with another sound from Sunrizer or other app. Just not so keen on the sounds by themselves.
