Guys, need some advice on iOS midi -> into a electronic drumkit

Hey all,

I'm thinking about getting a Yamaha DTXPLORER leccy kit. I believe it has about 22 kit presets. But I'm just thinking... if I had certain samples/kit sounds on the iPad.. would I be able to use those instead?

I have an iRig MIDI which I use for midi'ing into.the iPad at the moment, could I use that?

I saw a great sounding app called Acoustic Drummer the other day and was impressed with the sound selection.

This is the kit here:

Thanks!

  • Well, I've found that is possible to do what I want with a mac or pc, using software : Superior Drummer or Addictive Drums.

But there's not a whole lot coming up on YouTube with the iPad :-(

Presumably what I'd need is a dedicated drum app with lots of samples available.

Incidentally the demo of SuperiorDrums here sounds incredible!:

  • What is 'leccy'?

  • Electronic. Bit of a British slang sorry!

Are you asking to control a drum set on iOS with a midi drum kit ?
Or to control an external drum kit from an iOS midi sequencer ?
Cause the topic title seems to be opposite of what you're asking....
If it's the former you will not find anything remotely as good on iOS as
Superior drummer or addictive drums 2 on pc/mac.

  • I have a Roland TD10 module (about 15 years old!) with a mish-mash of actual edrums... I've only briefly hooked it up to my iPad (as I haven't played in a while, focusing more on guitar right now). I used the midi out from the drum module into the midi in on my Focusrite Scarlett interface and tried it using the "DrumPerfect" app on iPad (£5.99, not the DrumPerfect Pro version, but I will maybe get that later) - most of my drum pads worked and they sounded very good (with the audio going back through the Scarlett interface into a HiFi) although some (I think hi-hat, one or two cymbals) didn't trigger anything. Looking at the app, I see a "Learn" button so I hope that it is possible to teach it the correct midi input for each part of the kit in the app, to get all the pads working. Or, the drum module can probably be tweaked for the midi signals it sends. I just haven't tried yet!

I've taken a quick look at the DTXplorer user manual, page 31 gives you the midi notes sent for each pad. I can't see any instructions on changing the notes so they may be fixed, in which case you'll need an app that can be tweaked or has midi learn. You iRig midi should do fine for what you want regarding connectivity.

Like I said, I spent probably 5 minutes on this, a short while back, so I haven't done any proper testing. If you want I can connect it all up again to try it out - I'm hoping to buy a Yamaha PA speaker soon and that would work quite well for the drums too. From what I heard tho, the DrumPerfect kit I tried sounded great, and there are several more in the app. You could spend the £5.99 to listen to the app sounds first before buying the actual hardware kit...

Well it has a midi out port on the back of it, so assuming you have a midi interface for your iPad it should be possible to use with pretty much any iPad drum app that has midi in.
Only potential snag is that you might have to remap some of the midi outputs to different notes.

But this is an obvious candidate

  • I've done this with many apps, using an Aesis DM-5 Kit. Apps used were Cubasis, Auria, SampleTank 2, SoundCanvas, Drums XD, and DrumPerfect. Note mapping differs throughout, so that takes some time to dial in. I'm not a drummer, but my buddy, who is, seems to like it pretty well, though an acoustic kit wins hands down for him. Still, the ability to switch kits is a nice feature.

  • Meant to add that I'm using the Akai EIE (red unit) for the midi interface to the iPad.

Yeah looking back I could've been a bit clearer clearer.
I'm trying to play an electric kit, feed the midi into the iPad and have it play a sample effect different to that of the drumkit's brain (just extending the sound selection of the kit basically)

---about the expectation of anything on iOS comparing to SuperiorDrummer,.... No I wouldn't *really *expect anything as good... but surely, given enough storage space on the iPad, it would be possible.... its just a huge selection of high quality samples right? (in Superior Drummer I mean).

Obviously there's tonnes of other things going on as well, effects, dynamics etc. but in terms of the basic sound sample is what I mean.

the correct title for what you're asking should be:- Guys, need some advice on a midi drumkit => iOS Sampled drums.
superior drummer and their like use dozens of round robin samples with upto 127 velocity layers.
on IOS i think the max i have seen is 3 round robins and 10 velocity layers. so its a pretty drastic difference in quality....

Thanks for such a detailed reply!yes I'm aware now that remapping is often required in this scenario.

I will definitely look into DrumPerfect. Thanks for the tip.
I will also look into SoftDrummer app which I watched a review of recently from SoundTestRoom (Doug), and was impressed with the show

    Thank you, this sounds promising.

I have have sample tank so I'll give that a go :-)
